CC: Mark Richt

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

I know we've bandied this about in general CC threads, but thought it was worthwhile to discuss a high-major coach who may be on the market after this season. Bulldog fans are getting a bit restless and Richt (or UGA) may be looking to make a change. What would you say to having Richt in Ann Arbor?

Note: One of the Michigan Rivals mods is saying he's heard Richt may be in play absent an SEC Championship win, and that he'd be looking to land at a major non-SEC program in that event.

9-3 gets you fired.  Anyone realize that expecting more than can be accomplished only gives you an ulcer.   Winning near 70% is what they call being successful.  Do that for a career and you are regarded as a good coach.  The number of teams that have no losses every year is way less than 1%.  He likely won't be coming to Michigan.  If they fire him they are opening themselves up to 3-9 seasons.  Is anyone availble who has a better reacord than his?

UGA fans are frustrated with Richt in the same way Michigan fans were frustrated with Carr or Tennessee fans with Fulmer (except that Richt, unlike the other two, didn't win any national titles).  It seems that Georgia has the talent to be in the conversation every year, but they always lose one or two games they shouldn't.  Sometimes those losses are against the great SEC teams, and sometimes they're not (like UF this year).

Georgia is a much more attractive job than Michigan for a variety of reasons (easier SEC division, talent rich state, general SEC superiority). And in the SEC it seems like even coordinators and the southern fried version of MACtion hires can spin ass into gold, so I don't think they really care that much about the who.

As an alumnus of both schools I would love this. UGA doesn't understand how good they have it (like Nebraska firing Solich and Tennessee firing Fulmer). However, while Richt would be a great fit for the values Michigan upholds, he ain't coming north. He's a Miami graduate, a former FSU assistant, and he's spent 15 years in Athens. He's not moving.

I just don't see it happening. He is older than folks think, and I can't see him uprooting and moving to a place with an entirely different climate, culture, etc. How many coaches head north? Urban Meyer had roots in Ohio so that move made sense. James Franklin took the PSU job but he is young and that was a huge step up for him.

He wins a fair amount of the time.  His teams tend to fold in the biggest games when they are a considerable favorite.  If Harbaugh, Miles, Patterson and xxx aren't available, sure why not.  If we can't get harbaugh or Miles, this program is headed for a longggggg hard road for the next decade

He's an interesting case.  His numbers are very good but not great, but he does seem to be a clean coach in a dirty conference.  If he relaxed his ethics to Saban / Miles / Freeze levels, then he'd probably have some sexier accomplishments on his résumé.  I'd imagine that he has a lot of Georgia fans wondering if it's time to just play by the same rules that the other SEC heavyweights play by, as gross as that would feel.

As long as Hoke is our coach my guess would be no.

Sadly.

On a somewhat related note it appears my cat for coach post only slowed down the enslaught of these threads for a day or two.  They have now geared back up and are back to posting about one every 3-4 hours or so.  I honestly believe that eventually every single living person who is coaching or has coached D1 football will be "nominated" as a possible replacement by somebody.

Great guy. Seems like he cares a lot about the rules and abiding by them, which is surprising given that he coaches in SEC country. I think he would fit in well.

My only qualm is that it seems like UGA can never win the big primetime game or ALWAYS loses 1 game a year they have no business losing.. I don't get it.

It seems that his career pearked early at UGA, similar to Mack Brown to Texas. He won a lot of games early on, two Sugar Bowl wins, six 10+ wins seasons in his first 8 and eight wins his first year was the worst. Never finished a season unranked.

Since than he's been stuck around 8 wins a year, unranked finishes 3 of the last 5. Two good seasons in the middle, but they still didn't meet expectations. Georgia fans want a change.

he hired Hoke: nice guys, honest, clean and would (hopefully) win Conference titles.  I'd put him behind Miles and Mullen in SEC.  Mullen might have more upside (might), but Miles is still a better choice.

UGA is overrated every year. Richt loses a big game or two every year. Yeah, it's more than what Michigan has right now, but we can do way better. Also, Richt will never voluntarily leave UGA.

I've said it before in threads and agree wholeheartedly. He seems perpetually on the hot seat in Georgia and it would probably be way easier for him to accomplish great things in our conference. The cultures at both schools seem very similar and he's outspoken against oversigning which is unique in that conference.

Maybe he won't come but if you're considering Mullen who is having one fantastic year now but other than that not much as a head coach why not get a consistent performer in Richt who could probably make hay in the Big Ten as it currently stands. Also, if Michigan ups the game and gets a great coach in a great conference it may force other schools to up their coaching selections which could improve competition which would be better for everyone.

I'm glad Meyer and Dantonio are at OSU and MSU. We need to up our game and get a coach that matches those two not hope that those programs come back down to our current status. We got Hoke who was 47-50 before coming here. It's time for Michigan to start acting like the winningest football program and pay for a guy who can get it doone and justify all the support heaped on this program by the fan base.

I can't understand some of the people on this blog who write "do not want" in response to threads about guys like Stoops and Richt.  Both of these guys are top level coaches, succeeding in some of the hardest conferences.  I know, we all want Jim H - I do as well - but IF  for whatever reason he doesn't come here, there have to be others on our list.  For those that don't want Richt, please name for me 5 other options (nope, Jim H doesn't count) that would be better, safer picks?

and come directly or indirectly to a Big Ten team since 1960 is tiny. From what I can tell, it comes down to two: Hayden Fry going from N. Texas St. to Iowa, and Fred Akers going from Texas to Purdue. However, Akers was either fired by TX or was going to be, and it's highly unlikely any coach would willingly ditch a program like Texas for Purdue.

I know UGa fans think he's holding them back. Of the past 8 years with ESS EE SEE teams in the championship game repeatedly, UGa is the only bigname program of the group not to be there -- UGa, Kentucky, Vandy, the two Miss schools, USC(NTUSC). Hard pill for them to swallow. BUT -- look at what he brought UGa. Prior to his arrival, they were perennial 8-9 win teams, if even. Regularly losing the FLA game. Meanwhile, he was Bobby's OC at FSU, and FSU was on top of the world. Almost as soon as he left FSU for UGa, fortunes flipped in both places. UGa started getting 10-11 win seasons; and Bobby's FSU teams couldn't win over 8 a year. Also, a couple years ago, UGa was just about every bit as good as 'Bama. Just a play away. Richt is really a good coach. But: -- UGa seems to lose a game they shouldn't, each year -- He hasn't stepped foot outside the Deep South AFAIK for about 8234.3 years (adjusted for time inflation). -- He's not a young buck. -- The ESS EE SEE East is a lot easier right now than it used to be; might be easier to put a winner together there than against OSU, MSU, PSU, and Mighty Rutgers. So: Even if he's let go, he's more likely going to the ACC or a lesser ESS EE SEE school and not up north where, you know, we have SNOW.
