CC: Juwan about more than winning?

Submitted by Blue_Goose on May 18th, 2019 at 9:27 AM

posting from phone, hope I can make paragraphs. Holding to see if that helps.

I remember one of our recent recruits that committed over another major program stating that at Michigan it was about more than “win at all costs”  When I’m thinking about the CC candidates I can’t help but consider the extra factors Juwan will bring to UM.  Particularly if the Fab5 “culture” comes back (this is Jalen’s language)

If Michigan wants to be a part of a cultural seismic shift in Bball recruiting and NCAA athletics overall, who would be better positioned than The Fab5?

I’m not saying that is the plan, but if it is I would sign up for that all day every day. Using the leverage of our Universities darker past to bring real light and real change to the way things are done?

More specifically, I am thinking about the proper financial support of a player and their families.  Calling out other universities who “cheat” as Jalen uses his bully TV pulpit to call out shenanigans.  I imagine Howard would restructure coaching/recruiting/benefits of the B-ball athletes all together.  Similar to Harbaugh with the Football program trips and support staff enhancements

Maybe I’m dreaming but I’d love your feedback good and bad about what Juwan might bring that could be worth “more” than just W/L.

Big mistake if Warde thinks bringing in JH will help keep the staff anything longer than a year. I would rather them just promote Yak and add another offensive analyst.

My question is, I we hire Juwan Howard are we going to have to clarify which JH we are referring to?

Edit: My bad. I failed to read down further to see the similar comments.

Also, for you research gurus, how many major college teams have head football and basketball coaches with the same initials?

I'm as skeptical about Juwan as anyone, but the bottom line is for is this:

1) If he's good enough for NBA jobs, he's good enough for M

2) The kicker is, does *he* want to coach a college team? There's been no indication that he has ever even thought about it. Expressed no desire to coach college ball. That's my hang up.

Recruiting I'd expect to be as good or better than Beilein (I've heard the arguments for/against his potential recruiting ability (in comparison to Penny H at Memphis vs OMG FAB5!!). His Xs and Os & development may be worse (depends on who you ask: assnt & player under great NBA minds, big guy developer, overall hoops mentor VS John freaking Beilein). He should be able to run a program at the executive level at least and he should have the contacts/self awareness to hire experienced college coaches (the inverse of Beilein in Cleveland).

I'd be OK with him but he HAS to exhibit some enthusiasm for the job and at least an eye toward wanting to be in A2 for 10 years or a NC potentially. Maybe offer a 6 yr contract that will be adjusted to no buyout to an NBA team if he wins a NC?

If you initials are "JH", you get to be head coach. Seriously, I think signing Howard is like getting in on the ground floor of a hot IPO that people will wish they joined when they had the chance.

Expecting Juwan Howard to change the culture of all of college basketball is not fair.  Yeah, the Fab 5 had that impact 25+ years ago.  But let's be realistic.  How about we just hope he is a good coach?
