CC: Bizarre Finish Leaves 49ers 4-4

I imagine's Schlissel response would be something like that "I know how important athletics are to the Michigan family and I trust [New Athletic Director] to run his own department"
As long as the budget is balanced and it isnt interfering with the University, Schlissel doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would care much

Also, just look at the basketball program. When John Beilein took over, they were bringing in no more than $8 million per year. That number's more than doubled now; the revenue from last season was greater than $16 million. So I'd say the extra few mil given to Beilein and his staff was a good choice.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a significant recruiting dead period during the holidays and bowl games? Not sure if it is extended at all due to the college playoff, but with that dead period I don't think there would be significant damage with waiting until the end of the NFL season unless there is a significant playoff run.

I was just remembering the good old days - the Harbaugh QB days - when there were so many students in the student section that we were stacked on both the benches and the ground, and no one sat the entire game. Saturdays absolutely revolved around games, even away games. I would love it if Harbaugh was the one to bring that back to Michigan.
November 2nd, 2014 at 9:27 PM ^
Perfect idea: 49ers lose out, Harbaugh comes to AA by 29th or 30th, then its new years.... NEW YEAR, NEW COACH.
November 2nd, 2014 at 9:28 PM ^
If Schlissel sets the ceiling for a new coach at 4 million, he'll become the anti Brandon and have marches on his house but this time they'll come for him. After what I saw of him during the press conference, he's not stupid. The funding for a football coach doesn't come from academics anyways.

that is an NFL thing.
November 2nd, 2014 at 9:39 PM ^
So Harbaugh can't talk to his former school? Ok. I would love to know what the 49ers would do if they found out someone at Michigan talked to Harbaugh. Nothing.
November 2nd, 2014 at 9:53 PM ^
Um no. NFL can't tell UM to do anything. That applies to other NFL teams.
November 2nd, 2014 at 10:02 PM ^
Even then is it really asking for permission or just informing the 49ers? I've never heard of a request being denied. Harbaugh interviewed for the Jets job that Rex Ryan got. Did Stanford give permission?

Stanford is a college. Your example is not a good one.

The university can pay a base salary and donors make up the necessary difference and maybe after a couple nat'l titles they can pay off his mortgage. I've heard that has happened before.

Who's saying he can't go back to the NFL later and win a superbowl. With someone with a big ego like him to come back to Michigan restore the program maybe win a national title then win a superbowl seems like it would be awesome.

Well, the timing on all this is working out just fine.
On Dec. 26, a 6-6 Michigan team meets an 8-4 Central Michigan team in the Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field.
On Dec. 28, the San Francisco 49ers play their final game of the season against the Arizona Cardinals.
On Dec. 29, Jim Harbaugh announces he's leaving the San Francisco 49ers.
On Dec. 29, Michigan athletic director Jim Hackett fires Brady Hoke.
On Dec. 30, Jim Harbaugh is named the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Head Football Coach.

On Dec. 26, despite 215 yards rushing from Drake Johnson, a 6-6 Michigan team loses to an 8-4 Central Michigan team, 42-38.

This is fine but a bit inconvenient for JH. So I propose we invite ourselves to the Kraft Hunger bowl IN SAN FRANCISCO on Dec 30th and Jim can be all decked out in his maize and blue in the stands leading to his hire on Dec 31st.

Let's drop the J Ira and Nicki Harris part and keep the football coach part.
Maybe the new AD will learn to screw all this "donor-naming" the job crap!

Stanford, Northwestern, Duke, Vandy, BC, and 7 of the 8 Ivy's have endowed coaching position. I don't know why people continue to make a deal about it, especially in a thread where how much we could pay Harbaugh is a big topic.
