the best they can do is 10-6 and to get there, they have to win out @Seattle(9-4), vs San Diego(8-4), & vs Arizona(10-3).

Then, they have to hope that the non-division champs (Ariz 10-3, Seattle 9-4), (Philadelphia 9-4, Dallas 9-4), (Green Bay 9-3. Detroit 9-4) lose enough to leave the door open.  Although there is considerable cannibalism remaining among these leaders, and the Niners own the head-to-head against Dallas, I'm guessing that a couple of eggs would need to be laid outside of the cannibalism for the Niners actually to make the playoffs.

If the 49ers would fire him before the season ends that would give michigan the advantage. All of the other NFL teams would still have their coaches and a few weeks to go for the season.

His owner and GM have made it obvious, & there is speculation he is leaving for another team or UM.  Under similar circumstances, teams are just not motivated.  Remember how his UM team played for RR in his last bowl game?

the chances of SF in the playoffs declined this weekend from 22% to about 6-7%..  Everything significant went wrong for SF.  Not only SF<Oak but also Dal>Chi, Det>TB, Az>KC, and even Sea>Phi (although this changed the chances by only 0.7%).

Given that they have 3 very tough games ahead, their chances look very small.    GIven that, they might need a lot of help even if they somehow won all 3.

You guys cheering Jim Harbaugh losing, assuming that will somehow improve Michigan's chances, haven't been paying attention to who the guy is. He is not going to leave the NFL as a failure when his brother has a Super Bowl title.

There might be something to this.  Harbaugh does not want to end his NFL coaching career with a total implosion.  I think our chances would actually be better if they narrowly missed the playoffs.

Look at it this way: If Harbaugh wanted the Oakland job, he would have made sure he pounded the hell out of them to insure they'd get a better draft pick next year when he was their coach.

He all but wore maize-and-blue khakis in this one.

I live in Chicago and I'm a little surprised I haven't heard a lot about the possibility of him coming to the Bears. I certainly don't want it to happen, but it would make sense if Trestman were fired.
