CBSSports - Nice Rip on Kelly & the Current State of CF

Submitted by TheNannMan on December 1st, 2021 at 3:39 AM

Dodd of all people getting after the state of college football, can’t say I disagree:

”While we're at it,  congratulations everyone. This season's coaching carousel has indeed become bigger than the games in the biggest week of the season.

Maybe this is simply a glimpse of the future. The NCAA as we know it will soon be dead. These new contracts reflect a growing gap between millionaire coaches and the (still) underpaid labor force that plays for them.”

It is crazy that these guys are making more than an average NFL coach by a wide margin. Wow. Not good for NFL by the way. I expect those billionaires look at their bottom line and do some backdoor shenanigans to squash this spike. Or just raise the salary and force us to watch even more commercials. Win win for everyone except the fans.

I'm in the minority, but I don't fault Kelly for leaving when he did. It's like that time Tiger left a major early, even though chaos almost ensued to backdoor him into a playoff. The odds of UM, UC and OSU losing are slim, so he took the money that he probably knew ND was not going to match.

And, there's an academic floor that some kids will not meet at ND but they'll be welcomed at LSU. Getting into the postseason hasn't been the issue for ND. The issue is having the talent to win once there.

What's the point of sticking around a few extra weeks and letting this offer pass, just to get your head caved in by UGA or Bama?

I'm pretty sure I'd be willing to be a bit of an ass for that kind of money too.  So what?  People will hate him, but he can make his entire family rich for pretty much forever.

"This is like a coach of a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament leaving on the eve of Round 1 tip-off."

Umm, so what Dodd doesn't remember is that Bill Frieder coached the #3 seed Michigan Wolverines until the day before the 1989 NCAA basketball tourney started.  So precedent says ND could win the championship!

Also, I'd like to say that Bo handled the situation better than Swarbrick did.  But it left us with that bullshit 'Michigan Man' bullshit that has been taken so far out of context that people don't even remember what the context was.  It had nothing to do with 'values', or 'integrity' - it had everything to do with a coach that was dedicated and loyal to his players, and kinda sorta EMPLOYED by Michigan.

Bo didn’t coin the term “Michigan Man.”  That goes back to at least Yost, if not even earlier.  And it does usually have to do with values - respecting what this school stands for.

Now, where it can be problematic is when it’s assumed that anyone who went here upholds those values, or that someone who didn’t go here can’t.

"But do let me reiterate the spirit of Michigan. It is based upon a deathless loyalty to Michigan and all her ways; an enthusiasm that makes it second nature for Michigan men to spread the gospel of their university to the world's distant outposts; a conviction that nowhere is there a better university, in any way, than this Michigan of ours."

--Fielding H. Yost upon his retirement as Michigan's athletic director in 1940.

The earlier signing day is a big factor in forcing these moves by schools and coaches at this point on the calendar. It also encourages reaching out to coaches during their season by other schools.

It's not a great time for changes. The urgency is a lot higher to do it now rather than wait a few weeks.

Seriously? A guy writing for CBS Sports, an entity that has literally paid the SEC over a billion dollars in the last 25 years for football broadcast rights, and offered $300 million/year last year before losing those rights to Disney for SEC games is complaining about the corruption of football due to the influence of money?
