Can the comments look more like Haloscan?

Submitted by qbwaggle on
Does anyone have any tips to get the comments section to look more like Haloscan?  Before lynching me for speaking fondly of Haloscan, let me clarify.  I really liked how compact and inconspicuous the Haloscan comments were... very easy to browse at work without fear of drawing attention to my unhealthy Michigan football obsession.  Are there any hidden Drupal options or browser-level mods I can make so the comments look less like a message board and more like Haloscan???

I can always restyle the comments, but making the comments appear as their own pop-up might be a major project. And plain-looking comments probably won't do any good if it's in the framework of the blog, right?

I agree that the "ESPN Conversation"-style comments system would be an improvement. Maybe I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too, but what would be ideal for me is some set of options so you can use the default comment layout (like it is now with profile photos and the like) or you can scale it back to a more text-based layout like the ESPN Conversation or Haloscan.  I have no idea how feasible this is, but in my hypothetical MGoBlog commenting utopia, that's how I'd do it.

I'd like to add a vote for some sort of text comment section - I tend to read the comments on my Treo, etc., while on the train to/from work or when stranded at an airport.  These beautiful comments look like crap on that little device and I'm going to spend most of my train ride refreshing the page to see the next set of comments.

I do like the look of the site, though, and realize that as a lurker I probably shouldn't presume to speak up on Launch Day...

But a big thumb's up for moving baseball talk to the sidebar!

I guess the blog comment sections I've preferred have always looked really tightly integrated with the site.  These look more like message board posts, which may not be ideal since you are trying to differentiate between the comments and the board.

Also, this may just be me, but a subject line seems kind of useless for a comment. With the new rules, shouldn't the comments be on the subject of the post itself?

From my point of view, the most important part of a comment in the content itself, followed by personal info, followed by the timestamp.  After that, the rest is kind of irrelavent. Included in that is the threading, I guess.  I've never really read a comments section and was disappointed that it was flat.

I have a little bit of experience and a lot of free time if you want any help.

Guess what you've just earned?

Yes---a two week time out to beautiful BOLIVIA!

Ridiculous that you're spamming ancient threads (this one from 2008!) just to accrue enough points to be a serial negger.

When your account is restored in two weeks, if you return to the same nonsense, the next ban may end up being permanent.
