Camp Sanderson Will Be Crowded This Summer

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Just about every youngster on the team will be sticking around for the summer. This team is going to be FIT next year.

DJ Wilson, Mark Donnal, Ricky Doyle, Aubrey Dawkins, Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, Kam Chatman all staying in Ann Arbor for Camp Sanderson.

stay. It would be an indication to me that he isn't trying to be his best. The proof is out there for anyone to see that those who stay improve dramatically so why would you stay if you want to be on the team. You are coming to Michigan to win.

I do agree that the proof is there for Camp Sanderson, but also some of these kids have been here since July and probably haven't seen their families in months. Chatman and Wilson in particular, are from the other coast so it might be good for them to head home for a couple of weeks.

Of course as a Michigan fan, I want everyone to stay and get better... but I wouldn't technically be mad if someone went home and trained for a couple weeks because they missed their family.

some would stay and some would go home but Chatman for instance came here for a reason. I'm sure he wants to get to the NBA and the sooner the better. Therefore it makes no sense for him to skip one of the most proven development tools Michigan has.

I think most players committing to Michigan now are coming hoping for this dramatic improvement. It doesn't surprise me at all that most of the players would stay.

It's hard to argue against prior players' results in Camp Sanderson, but staying in AA for the summer and "not trying to be your best" are not the only possible outcomes.  Sanderson has worked wonders with a handful of guys the last few years, but there are plenty of trainers, coaches, facilities, etc. that get the same result from players that want to put the work in.  If a player wanted to spend the summer back home working out with a professional trainer that his parents are footing the bill for, it's not too far fetched to think you could see the same player development.

What I DO think you can't replace is the focus on Michigan basketball and a boost in team comraderie/chemistry that these players get from spending all summer sweating in Crisler together and hanging out on campus together.

Maybe it's reading into this a bit much, but I'd be surprised if we saw any transfers. Would be a bit odd for guys to stick around all summer only to leave before the school year started.

Yes, I was thinking with Wilson in the mix next year and how the playing time has sorted itself out late this year there might be a transfer in there so we'll see.   I still don't think it 100% guarantees anything.  I think if Max comes back for a 5th (not saying he will) that I would not rule it out.

That is good news indeed, in my opinion.

This plus the experience they have managed to get this season really do bode well for the 2015-16 campaign. Definitely paid dividends for Caris and Nik, and then Zak and Derrick, but to see a fair portion of the entire team dedicate themselves to this is awesome.

This is going to be a tight-knit group of guys next season. Happy to hear that they're staying in Ann Arbor this summer. Next year could be special, and I'm proud of how they fought this season.

Holy insane depth, Batman. First ever for Beilein at Michigan? Yes, believe so. Even in our most recent great years, our good depth was 7/8 strong.. so this heavily trumps that.

I really wouldn't be surprised to see some early entry NBA guys next year from this lineup... Potential for Levert, Irvin and Walton.  If Irvin plays like he has the last few weeks all season long, there will be some definite chatter with him. Walton was on the board before he got hurt and his play suffered from it. And Dawkins, man... I'm not going to say it wont happen.

They play vastly different positions so their minutes shouldn't really be compared to one another. Not sure why you're loling so much. Donnal, if Bielfeldt is not offered a 5th year (if we get Wagner, he won't be),  will be our backup center. That will be good for 10 minutes a game unless Wilson becomes a viable option there (which is a big unknown at this point). MAAR will compete with Caris (possibly), Walton and Spike for minutes at the 1 and 2 spots. Not going to be alot of minutes available. I do think MAAR is capable of playing minutes at the 3 as he is 6'4", but Irvin and Dawkins are going to sap up alot of those minutes.

Beilein plays his stars big minutes.  No way Irvin is playing 30 minutes a game next year.  35-36 is typical for his alpha dogs - see Nik, GR3, Caris in prior years.

And the rotation won't be that deep.  He goes 9 max really. . A few games where the center gets in early foul trouble he might mix in 2 backups (so it goes to 10) but I don't see a raw prospect like the German guy getting playing time next year.

I see the lion's share of minutes to Irvin/MAAR/Spike/Walton at 1 thru 3.  Unless Robinson is some super stud I see him as the mop up minutes guy in year 1.  Then Dawkins vs Chatman at the 4 (Dawkins at this point I see 30 minutes).  Then 5 is a 3 man competition I assume between Doyle v Wilson v Max or Donnal (whomever is still here).

What about the upperclassmen - Albrecht, Walton, Irvin?  Are they "graduates" of Camp Sanderson and don't need to do it again?

This is good news partly for the reasons that everyone is saying (getting guys in shape) and partly because it suggests that we don't have many, if any, guys who plan to leave us unexpectedly this offseason.  We've had a few of those during the Beilein years (Smotrycz, Horford, etc.).

like they all know the competition for PT will be big next year and neither wants to be out worked by the others. Best possible scenario for the team.
