Camp rumor: Gentry getting reps @ TE

Submitted by greensborohill1 on
on the Huge Show this afternoon Chris Balas said that he heard out of camp that Zack Gentry is taking snaps at TE. He said it was to get more play makers on the field and that it was not a permanent move.

Hopefully he stays at QB, but I like getting your playmakers on the field wherever you can. If it becomes permanent, a more athletic Jay riemersma sounds pretty good to me

We all trust in Harbaugh and I love the fact that all positions are open and that he wants the best athletes on the field. After reading one of the previous threads on how DG was misused and Nuss never tried big plays, cannot wait to see what Fisch and Drevno and Harbaugh and Wheatley can do. Dang our staff is loaded with talent!

Harbaugh has made it well known that he likes guys who are athletes first, football players second (remember him having players field ground balls during his football camp?). This is a good way to test Gentry's athleticism to see what they've got with him AND see how well he takes to coaching (make sure he's not an arrogant hot head).

I may get negged for this, but if I'm being honest with myself, I'm not sure how much Chris Balas actually knows. I'm on Rivals, and to be honest he doesn't always seem to have the inside scoop. If in a few days we start hearing more reports that come to the same conclusion, then I'll start listening.

I have heard other people discuss the possibility of having some sort of packaged plays for Gentry, a la freshman Tebow or Oklahoma's use of Blake Bell. To me this seems like a much more plausible route to the field, especially if Ruddock (a less mobile QB) is the starter.

Wisonsin's Owen Daniels was a qb recruit who is now obviously a tight end in the NFL. I think a shoulder injury forced the switch with him, but it's not that out of the ordinary. In any case, it seems like in at least a few cases JH likes players to see what it's like on the other side of the ball. It seems like it would be an enlightening exercise.

I like the gang of TEs idea.. Sounds like the O is going to be smashmouth running and high percentage passes for QB.. Minimize turnovers and let what i think will be a good defense keep us in games.

If he's not going to play this year and they know he's a viable #3 or #4 QB, play him at TE if he can contribute and let him play QB in the off season and next season.

Blake Bell style

Ryan Tannehill style

Both got their shot to be QB when it came...one just signed a HUGE contract in the NFL for the Dolphins.

I'll take a wait and see approach before I panic even for a second.

There is almost no way you know what you're talking about.

See? At least I left room for doubt. The guy has speed and size and is playing for a man known for developing TEs and position switches. He'll probably stick at QB but if you seriously believe that there's a 0% chance he switches, you haven't been paying attention.

I heard rumors Beilein is going to try him at power forward and the v-ball team wants him at spiker. Of course, he could always change the light bulbs in the Diag ...

The dude is fast ...& he is a beast. With his size, he is ready to play now I would think. He is like Gronk basically. He might play TE for awhile - while he learns playbook for QB. So then he could play either spot part way thru season. JH wants to win now. Watch & see fellas. Were going to kick some ass this year with JH at the helm!

it's early in camp, he won't be our QB this year and it's letting him do SOMETHING in practice. We know the QB job is between Morris & Rudock. The loser is the backup and I think the staff is hoping they can RS both Malzone & Gentry. I'm guessing Speight or one of the walk-on guys are 3rd string. So, why not throw a 6-7 250 dude with the TE reps? I doubt he changes to TE but if he does that means he was horrible at QB or we have a couple better options (a good thing). Nothing to see here.

TE appears to be JH's perferred position change.  We have seen DL, LB's, and now a QB get a shot at TE reps, along with the TE's we already had on the roster.  As far as I can remember some if not all of the best TE's all began playing either a different position or a different sport all together.  This JH person may actually know a little something about football... excited for football i am.
