Thought and speech are not free.

We are all allowed under the constitution to spout any stupid shit that we want.

At the same time. When you spout absolutely stupid, or reprehensible shit. The unwashed masses have an obligation to call your stupid shit out. If the larger group of michigan grads, fans, or community  considers you and your opinion disgusting it is well within their right, and i would argue duty to let you know that you are not a part of the group.

There is no "free thought or dialogue" just an equal right to express "thought or dialogue."

“Is that what we’re doing now?”

“Do you play for U of M?”

*whole demeanor changes after hearing yes*

”step out and come talk to me, you can bring that with you if you want”

”we can wait I’ll just go make some phone calls”

Curious where this officer was trained and educated. Seems to me in less than 20 seconds on this shitty video clip he’s already making it a very bizarre and uncharacteristic traffic stop (for speeding). I’ve been both driver and passenger in vehicles that were stopped for speeding and other things, but the officers have never asked if people in the vehicle played sports at a school, and never asked a compliant person in the vehicle to step out of the car and come talk to them, especially as basically the first verbal exchange between the two.

Golly gee, I totally miss this website actually being a fun website. I've never been a huge poster. Mostly, I just read the great sports content and came to the threads for good laughs and even more sports content.

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, this whole website has gone to shit. This place used to be an outlet for me. Now it's just full of judgemental assholes on both "sides". I get that the OP is trying to support the U of M players, but this place has basically become a "if you don't believe the same thing I do, you're an idiot/racist/terrible person."Please, just make it stop.

The world has many many issues. By all means, do what you think you are beholden to do to be at peace with yourself. Just can't we all be friends and bond over U of M sports for a while on this website?

*drops mic and starts weeping openly*

Agreed brother.

The OP makes a box of acceptable opinion to virtue signal. Everything outside the box= bad.

Even before watching/reading the link i want to hate OPs viewpoint. Its totally counter-productive.

The worst part is telling us we should'nt root for our school just because we might *possibly* differ from his conclusion. Even if it were the majority opinion of UM or Mgoblog community, that should'nt make it a litmus test.

Very sad and disturbing. You can hear the fear in their voices.

My question is what would've happened if the answer to his question about playing for Michigan was no?

Also here's Christian Turner's account. Absolutely terrible.

First thing he told us when he got to the car is that we where going to jail. His attitude changed when he found o we played football. https://t.co/NfCQUeZ5ez

All right.. racism is the new topic.  It exists, here is one of the many times I saw it.

Took my black girlfriend home to Michigan with me when I was in the Army.  I am so white that my blond hair turns bleach blond after sun exposure.  Stopped at a cafe in West Virginia to eat.  Holy shit batman! Could have heard a pin drop when we walked in.  People stared at us the entire time.  A drunk dude came to our table and even though he was trying to say he was cool with inter-racial love, everything he said was offensive.  It was a terrible experience for us both and I can't imagine having to feel this on a regular basis.

And  BTW, don't ever take your black girlfriend to a ZZTOP/ Lynard Skynard concert.  Just don't do it man!  I didn't even know Skynard fans were racists. (of course not all of them)

I really should have known better both times.

Some places are more racist than others.  Not nearly as bad out here in Portland as say, South Carolina.

Back in 1866, me and an old confederate soldier traveled to West Virginia to spread the word of how our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, saved us both from the impurity of human ways. And in the end, we converted almost every black American in the whole WV/Ohio area.

I recall one time when I lived in Poughkeepsie, NY I got pulled over around 2am coming back from visiting my girlfriend.  I was probably 27 years old at the time.  I was not speeding, was sober, have nothing on my license, and my car was registered and the inspection was up to date.

The police officer asked me to step out of the car.  When I did I put my hands in my pocket as a default stance and he yelled at me not to.  He asked to pat me down.  He asked to search my car.  He asked me a million questions while the other officer looked through my car.  I was pretty scared.  Eventually after quite some time he realized I was just a normal every day guy who works 9-5 and who's girlfriend happens to live 45 minutes away and I was coming home from visiting her on a Saturday night.  I don't know if there was a call about a similar vehicle to mine, but that stuff can be scary.  No offense if we have any cops here, but I have not had good experiences.  And, I'm the population you'd usually expect to not have issues...middle class, clean cut, white, teacher.

Starting to get a pretty good feel for your discontent.  If scumbags like yourself are losing your access to the program, that’s positive change.  That being said, hope you and yours are otherwise doing well.  Hadn’t seen you post for a while, thought I’d say hi.  This’ll be the last time I engage with you (not that you care).  All the best.

I feel like black americans think cops are only assholes to them. They dont realize there are some cops who are just assholes to everyone. There are assholes in every profession

I dont see anything racial about the video

If this race debate is really going to happen then white people need to be allowed to explain things as well. Right now its completly one sided

Lol! Right, lack of representation of white voices in American politics is the real issue here. Brilliant point.

And I feared for my life when the roller coaster at six flags looked like it was about to go off the track. Doesn't mean I was actually in any danger.

I'm so sick of people who think what they feel matters more than reality. Your feelings don't matter. All these whiny bitches need to shut the fuck up.

Liberals literally say feelings are reality. Not seems like reality, is literally reality. A girl told me last night that everyone’s experience is their reality and it can’t be questioned. I told her there is the truth and then There is each person's perspective. She said I was triggering her and she couldn’t talk to someone like that.

This OP is the fucking worst. Telling people he don’t want you to root for Michigan anymore. You sound like a fucking cry baby bitch. It wasn’t even that big of a deal. Some cops are dicks. Especially to black people. They like to abuse their power and feel like they have all control of the situation. The video wasn’t that bad. They’re kids and usually cops try to install fear into people. As far as I can tell everyone made it out of the situation ok. Find something else to do besides make yourself look so fucking righteous because you discovered a video on Twitter of a couple of upstanding Michigan football players being harassed by the boys in blue. If you’re so upset by it go to the police station and protest. Get the fuck out of here with your bullshit. We all know you can not be that upset about this or you just haven’t been laid in a long time and you have some built up aggression over something that didn’t even happen to you and you will go on with your day as usual.

Im not saying i doubt the young man but i would like to see dash cam or body cam to see the other side of the story. As a current federal leo asking him to get out of the car is fine and you could look at penn v mimms or for passengers maryland v wilson as case law. I ask people to step out of the car all the time its not a big deal.  If the traffic stop took longer than half an hour i wouldnt think that it would be reasonable unless there were other circumstances that we are unaware of.

in the state of michigan there is a specific statute that directs law enforcement to cite the driver and get them on their way as quickly as possible.  critical language here:

257.742 Stopping, detaining, and issuing citation for civil infraction; pursuing, stopping, and detaining person outside village, city, township, or county; purpose; violation as to load, weight, height, length, or width of vehicle or load; powers of police officer; issuing citation to driver of motor vehicle; form of citation; informing person of alleged civil infraction; delivering copy of citation to alleged offender; issuing, serving, and processing citations for parking and standing violations; filing citation with court; “parking violation notice” and “parking violations bureau” defined.

Sec. 742.

  (1) A police officer who witnesses a person violating this act or a local ordinance substantially corresponding to this act, which violation is a civil infraction, may stop the person, detain the person temporarily for purposes of making a record of vehicle check, and prepare and subscribe, as soon as possible and as completely as possible, an original and 3 copies of a written citation, which shall be a notice to appear in court for 1 or more civil infractions.

sounds great but there's a big problem with it:  there is no sanction to the cop, such as the ticket is thrown out, if s/he fails to follow the statute.  a toothless lion.

So, any one care to “guess” why those kids were afraid for their lives, instead of making excuses about why the cops pulled them over, herd them for more more than 30 minutes and then diminish their fear because it happened to “me”?
