Calling Their Shot - Delay to Elite 8 Start

Submitted by TheVarsity on March 29th, 2021 at 4:20 AM

Quit drinking and go to bed, I know, but does this make sense to anyone else:

Elite 8 matchup, against a low ranked blue blood (that may have tired legs), at 10:00 pm, on a Tuesday, during a weird (pandemic) year, when we're the only non-west coast team playing that day. Oh, and our injured, graduating, captain is one of the primary faces for NIL rights. Is this the game that's temporarily "boycotted"?

Yeah, I'm not sure why it wouldn't be Gonzaga, but Baylor is the late game Monday, when you have 2 west coast teams playing earlier, so looks like I'll be taking Wednesday off.

Few ppl on the east coast will stay up for USC-Zaga; people in the west will find a way to watch an early game at 4pm local time. UCLA-M will have eyeballs from sea to shining sea, esp in the prime of prime time on the west coast.

I'd put the O/U at half a million people that applied to one of UCLA and/or M in the last 3 years. It's THE eyeball match up of the tourney so far.

I think that the NCAA is allowing extra time for Illinois to write a letter stating why they should replace Michigan in this matchup.

Who cares if the tip is at 3:00am??? No excuses about anything and man up! Beat the ass off of UCLA and send them packing back to LA. Then BEAT the media darling Gonzaga and win it all on Monday night!! Go Blue

So my 14-year old daughter has caught the Michigan basketball bug this year (thank goodness as I lost my basketball game watching partner when my son went off to college for his freshman year). She's going to be crushed that she won't be able to watch the entire game, but there's no way we can let her stay up that late on a school night. Unless she takes a nap. Which hasn't happened since she was 2 years old.

The NCAA sucks.

I second this. It’s a 2 hour basketball game, not a 4 hour football game. Also, she’ll be lucky if she gets to watch a Michigan EE game once every couple years. And we all know not to take that for granted. I’m pretty sure screwing up one school day is well worth the memories she’ll have about this game.

But then again, my kids aren’t even in school yet, so what do I know.

"What if" with me for a second.  What if there had been a Big Ten Championship football game back in 2003, and it started at 8 p.m.?  What if a 14 year old kid had only been allowed to watch the first half because it was on a school night?  That kid would now be 32 and would never have seen Michigan football win a Big Ten Championship since she missed out that night in 2003.

Let the kid stay up.  Call her into first hour if you need to.  Some experiences are more important than perfect school attendance.  And I work in a school!

*Save the "But that will never happen with basketball" takes.  Would have been unthinkable with where football was in 2003, as well.

100% agree with the others. I have 13 and 8 y/o kids. I try to ask myself what will be impactful, meaningful, and memorable to the kid in 10 years? The negative of one day of school where they were a little tired and couldn't pay attention or the positive of getting to watch something you are really invested in and care about?

Back when I was 10, I would sneak a radio into my bedroom and stay up listening to the Tigers playing West Coast games.  Yeah it was summertime so a lot different, but those games started at around 10 Eastern and, being baseball, lasted WAY past midnight.

If she has something important like a test or an athletic event, then yeah, make sure she gets sleep.  Otherwise, one day of being tired isn't going to have any effect on her long-term.

My son stayed up and watched game 4 of the NBA finals in 2006 with me ... he was almost 7 years old and was so jacked up from the Pistons winning he barely slept and got up early for school ... your daughter will be fine and it’s something she’ll likely remeber for a long time

Probably not.
10PM ET on a Tuesday night in an Elite Eight game vs #11 seed on TBS or
primetime on Saturday in a Final Four game on CBS vs undefeated #1 Gonzaga?

I think I know which one I would choose if I were to protest with a delay.
