Cade “Cyanide” McNamara’s cyan circle

Submitted by tkgoblue on October 8th, 2021 at 11:51 AM

Hello all! Long time reader, first time poster. This may be my last (only) post here for a while.  (Still not sure what posts here are deemed relevant or satisfactory as legitimate message board posts after 10 years in this space) This may get me negged to hell, but there seemed to be enough discussion of the Cade “Cyan” topic on this site to create a thread dedicated to this discussion. I am hoping this thread reaches our fearless leaders attention on the blog and we can get some explanation on this Tom foolery! Is Cade booty cheeks in our bloggers eyes? Is this some sort of unspoken reversal jinx ( if so, I know I am ruining everything, sorry!)? Does the cyan circle an every evolving set of rules/ meaning? Please feel free to go at it below!

Here is my take, which is the correct take, so we can just lock this thread and you can all thank me later.

If I’m an opposing defensive coordinator, I’m game planning to put the ball in Cades hands to beat us. Completely selling out on the run and multiple blitz packages to confuse him.

That’s what makes him the trouble spot. Now, one can argue that teams have been doing this and Cade has responded well. Therefore he should lose the cyan. And… actually that would be a good argument. Now I’m conflicted. I have no idea. Back to work.

FWIW, I would love to see a more in depth chart like basketball breakdowns have. I hope that my post isn’t taken as complaining. I look forward to that chart every week to see how Seth has ranked the other team along with ours. I think it’s EA sports NCAA football ingrained in me to see who has earned the ⭐️  player threshold. Maybe I’m just weird?

I think you would be hard pressed to find another successful shotgun spread QB that:

  1. Cannot support a high volume passing game or move the ball consistently through the air
  2. Cannot contribute to the running game
  3. Consistently screws up RPO reads

So I get the cyan from that standpoint. But he has been successful! It's been through avoiding negative plays entirely and being borderline elite at creating explosive plays. In the context of our offense, yes his lack of ability is holding us back, so relatively he is a trouble spot. However, he also has elite aspects that bring his overall level to more in line with the rest of the offense. It's a good argument either way, and has played out this season, where we've looked dominant when he's on and more limited when he's not.

I see where you might want to give Cade a cyan for the things he doesn't do well but you need to credit him for the good stuff too. We're 5-0 with no turnovers (that really count) plus he's passing to a young and inexperienced wide receiver group. He's done a good job.

It's true that Cade could be better and is not among the elite QBs nationally. It's also true that 9.0 yards per attempt with no (or, assuming he does turn it over at some point, very few) turnovers will win you a lot of games. Cade has clearly been in the top half of B1G QBs this season, maybe the top third.

Ultimately, it's up to our intrepid bloggers to decide what cyans mean. That's their privilege as the guys watching all this dang film. But luckily for the team, we may not play another defense as good as Wisconsin this year. And in case you missed it, we stole the Badger defense's lunch money. So whatever the offense is doing, with Ol' Cyan out there, is indisputably working.

See, I just thought cyan was for the hitherto unknown Subtractive Colors Day, where we celebrate the fact that, whereas you can add wavelengths, you can subtract them as well. It isn't a very interesting day as days go, but then there is also Talk Like A Pirate Day, A Lima Bean Respect Day, and probably a Trouserless Trip To Target Day too.

A QB that has zero turnovers on an undefeated team, that just won in camp randall(sp?) isn't eligible to be a "trouble spot."

Cade is a very average QB. He left points on the board at Wisconsin, but, comparatively speaking - I'm sure Shea was eligible for a cyan by those same metrics over his coarse here.

I just now noticed the cyan circle. What a bunch of bologna. The kid hasn't had a damn turnover yet and if you dropped him at Wazzu or TTU he would probably be putting up 5000 yards.

Can someone say Cade is just an average QB?  Am I allowed to say that?  He's not a good runner, but his passing is average.  You could even say his passing is above average because he doesn't throw picks.  His overall variance is low.  He doesn't inspire you to think he'll be great, but it's not like we have to live through the Adrian Martinez Experience either.

The one issue I do have, is that this program should have a better QB at this point.  Maybe Cade could be that, but he's on his third year so how much better will he get?  QB development is definitely not a strength of the program under Harbaugh so that's probably where most of the frustration I have comes from. Maybe that changes with JJ in the future, but one of the last few QB's should have been better than average.  And that's on the staff.

Mr. tkgoblue, What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul

Wow only on mgoblog would there be a novel written and a library of arguments why a QB got some rando color.

Whatevs. Trust your eye. Cade to me seemed to be gaining confidence as the game went along. If he passes for 200+ yds and a couple of TDs without picks tomorrow against Nebraska, I can care less what FFFF thinks about him. He would officially be Ruddddoooockkk territory with a serious chance to be the best harbaugh QB. Case closed.

Considering some of the comments in previous threads I would have thought most readers would have agreed with Cade’s Cyan Circle. Personally, I don’t think he deserves the cyan, but I DO think he is slowing the offense down. In my humble opinion if he would keep on the obvious read two maybe three times against Rutgers that game isn’t as close.  If he keeps it a couple times against Wisky they have to come out of the “sell out” D they were running and that game is over sooner rather than later.

If he pulled twice per game none of us would be considering JJ because the Offense would be humming..

As it is Cade is better than average in the BIG at this point:

Cade> Thorn

Cade> Rutgers QB

Cade = Clifford

Cade = Stroud Although Stroud is a better runner

Cade > Penix/ Penix’ back up

Cade = Talia Tag (Maryland) too many turnovers

Cade > Mertz

Cade > Purdue QB's

Cade > Iowa’s QB

Cade > Northwestern’s QBs

Cade > Minnesota’s QBs

Cade = Martinez- only because no turnovers and Martinez’ inconsistencies. Martinez would be deadly in UM’s offense!!

I know I’m missing a couple team’s QB’s but my point is even with Cade’s flaws I don’t see any other BIG QB’s I would readily pick to replace him.

Maybe we see him keep a couple times, get a couple first downs and sliding to avoid any unnecessary shots.
