Was talking to a contractor I work with who is the same age as me (36) who had covid in March, was out 4 weeks and couldn't exercise for another 6, and now still gets bouts of fever over 102 that last a week, six months later.

I do not want covid.

I can't think of a disease in recent history that had such a disparity in symptoms. Many who test positive experience ZERO symptoms, some who really struggle with long-term effects, and obviously some who die. Anyone know of any other disease like it in history?

Yes, wear a mask. Yes, social distance as much as possible. But also, eat well and get your nutrients.

Some common cold coronaviruses have a similar range of symptoms.  They can be as extreme as pneumonia and death.  We also know they cause ME/CFS and other long term issues, in some cases.

The bad outcomes aren't nearly as frequent (and that might just be because everyone has first exposure when they're young and healthy), but the range is there.

But definitely everything you said: wear a mask, social distance as much as possible, and eat well and get your nutrients.  Because getting an initial infection from this thing is brutal for a lot of people.

Left one very important  one out.  sleep - plenty of rest.

I had 2 close friends who had COVID.  When they took the antibody test and came back positive, they were dumbfounded.  One couldn't even determine when they had it because he was never sick.  The other was barely sick - didn't even take any time off.

On the flip side, my great aunt-in-law (98 years old) died of COVID a few weeks ago.

I still don't want COVID.

Wow that sucks. It sounds like he was allowed to start practicing again after the quarantine period without a lot of testing, but he had pneumonia.  Why do these schools do the absolute minimum for these kids.

I mean, not to make this controversial, but these are folks who think a guy dug up some golden tablets in New York talking about Jesus' journey to the new world to convert the natives (who were actually a lost tribe of Israel) and convert them to kind-of-sort-of Christianity. So, maybe some decision making deficiencies exist???

I think you're ok here...Mormons are pretty chill when it comes to jokes / observations of the absurd regarding their religion.  See Response to Book of Mormon (not much noise there).

Be careful with some other faiths / fantasies, however, where you could lose your head insulting the prophet.

I mean, he barely had symptoms at onset and had fully recovered from that perspective (as well as testing negative).  He even made it through an entire rigorous practice.  This wasn't just walking pneumonia, this was running football pneumonia.

They're definitely not doing the absolute minimum/nothing.  That's hyperbole. The question is how much more should they do.  This would indicate a lung scan along with the heart scans is probably necessary.  My guess for why they aren't/haven't done this is that is probably extremely rare to have a case of walking pneumonia like this without feeling symptoms.  But dunno.

I live in Utah and we were doing well until a 2nd wave hit about 2 weeks ago. The biggest spike in cases? Right in the Provo/Orem area where there are A LOT of college students that returned to campus. BYU (33,000 students) is in Provo and Utah Valley University (37,000 students) is in Orem, which are neighboring cities. Fortunately, because it's a younger population the hospitalization and death rates are kept low.

My elderly mom lives in Orem and doesn't go out much, fortunately, but does have a caregiver visit daily. Hope that they get the spike under control there, but it's a slow-moving freight train once it gets going.

Hearing about lots of mask protests there, which is a shame. Really expected or hoped for more from that community.

Feel awful for the kid.  I really does seem to have a range of effects on people, and my guess is we'll see this spectrum in athletes over the season.  Most will be fine but a couple will have serious negative consequences, and we'll just sort of amble along in this malaise for the rest of the year.
