Kid tested positive after playing in BYU vs Navy opener game.
Stay safe all.

Was talking to a contractor I work with who is the same age as me (36) who had covid in March, was out 4 weeks and couldn't exercise for another 6, and now still gets bouts of fever over 102 that last a week, six months later.
I do not want covid.

I can't think of a disease in recent history that had such a disparity in symptoms. Many who test positive experience ZERO symptoms, some who really struggle with long-term effects, and obviously some who die. Anyone know of any other disease like it in history?
Yes, wear a mask. Yes, social distance as much as possible. But also, eat well and get your nutrients.

Some common cold coronaviruses have a similar range of symptoms. They can be as extreme as pneumonia and death. We also know they cause ME/CFS and other long term issues, in some cases.
The bad outcomes aren't nearly as frequent (and that might just be because everyone has first exposure when they're young and healthy), but the range is there.
But definitely everything you said: wear a mask, social distance as much as possible, and eat well and get your nutrients. Because getting an initial infection from this thing is brutal for a lot of people.

Left one very important one out. sleep - plenty of rest.

Some severe COVID-19 cases linked to genetic mutations or antibodies that attack the body
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/09/200924141529.htm
Nobody would ever want COVID-19 to have happened, but like all pandemics it's stimulating significant advances in our understanding of diseases and how they impact humans.

I had 2 close friends who had COVID. When they took the antibody test and came back positive, they were dumbfounded. One couldn't even determine when they had it because he was never sick. The other was barely sick - didn't even take any time off.
On the flip side, my great aunt-in-law (98 years old) died of COVID a few weeks ago.
I still don't want COVID.

I believe it’s called Herd Mentality.

Most of the people who are dying are old, so who cares, amirite?
#AllLivesMatter
September 24th, 2020 at 6:08 PM ^
That's fine for the people who don't know anybody who is old, or care about anybody who is.
September 24th, 2020 at 6:37 PM ^
Or care about fellow human beings.

He was being sarcastic and probably agrees with.
September 25th, 2020 at 12:08 AM ^
Well humans, possibly Americans the most, do have extreme aversion to aging and accepting death. We go to great lengths and efforts to “beat death”
September 24th, 2020 at 5:36 PM ^
Wow that sucks. It sounds like he was allowed to start practicing again after the quarantine period without a lot of testing, but he had pneumonia. Why do these schools do the absolute minimum for these kids.
September 24th, 2020 at 6:15 PM ^
I mean, not to make this controversial, but these are folks who think a guy dug up some golden tablets in New York talking about Jesus' journey to the new world to convert the natives (who were actually a lost tribe of Israel) and convert them to kind-of-sort-of Christianity. So, maybe some decision making deficiencies exist???

I think you're ok here...Mormons are pretty chill when it comes to jokes / observations of the absurd regarding their religion. See Response to Book of Mormon (not much noise there).
Be careful with some other faiths / fantasies, however, where you could lose your head insulting the prophet.
September 24th, 2020 at 6:45 PM ^
FWIW I've had the same experience.
Shifting topics, AFAIK Utah routinely leads the U.S. in many public health measures (secondary to abstention from alcohol and tobacco, likely, though the "inversion" probably doesn't help).
September 24th, 2020 at 8:41 PM ^
Are you referring to the Church of Q and their prophet Trump?
September 25th, 2020 at 6:00 PM ^
Just because we're quiet about it or don't "attack" back, doesn't mean it's "ok".
September 24th, 2020 at 7:00 PM ^
Well... lots of things end up getting buried in random places in New York... mostly bodies of guys who couldn't keep their mouth shut, but... you never know what else they put out there.
September 24th, 2020 at 7:28 PM ^
I had a few people in my congregation who were talking something similar to this. They also believe the earth is flat and the US Army encountered giants in Afghanistan.
You never like to lose people from your church, but in this case...
September 25th, 2020 at 5:32 AM ^
First I've heard of this giant story. Googled it. You...weren't lying. People are so fucking stupid.
September 24th, 2020 at 7:41 PM ^
"not to make this controversial, but I'm going to attack their religion"
September 24th, 2020 at 11:37 PM ^
Maybe they need to cut back on eating all the ten year old freaking canned food.
September 24th, 2020 at 6:27 PM ^
I mean, he barely had symptoms at onset and had fully recovered from that perspective (as well as testing negative). He even made it through an entire rigorous practice. This wasn't just walking pneumonia, this was running football pneumonia.
They're definitely not doing the absolute minimum/nothing. That's hyperbole. The question is how much more should they do. This would indicate a lung scan along with the heart scans is probably necessary. My guess for why they aren't/haven't done this is that is probably extremely rare to have a case of walking pneumonia like this without feeling symptoms. But dunno.

I live in Utah and we were doing well until a 2nd wave hit about 2 weeks ago. The biggest spike in cases? Right in the Provo/Orem area where there are A LOT of college students that returned to campus. BYU (33,000 students) is in Provo and Utah Valley University (37,000 students) is in Orem, which are neighboring cities. Fortunately, because it's a younger population the hospitalization and death rates are kept low.
September 24th, 2020 at 5:56 PM ^
My elderly mom lives in Orem and doesn't go out much, fortunately, but does have a caregiver visit daily. Hope that they get the spike under control there, but it's a slow-moving freight train once it gets going.
Hearing about lots of mask protests there, which is a shame. Really expected or hoped for more from that community.
September 24th, 2020 at 6:09 PM ^
I saw my first "freedom mask" a few days ago. Not this jamoke ... some other jamoke.
I didn't loudly insult or make fun of the guy. How's that for restraint?
September 24th, 2020 at 8:28 PM ^
My dad, who had been sick for a long time confined to a bed at home, got Covid from a caregiver (she tested positive after the fact) and passed. My mom , 83, also got it, but only experienced loss of taste. Said caregiver was totally unsanitary in her duties. Use care!
September 24th, 2020 at 9:28 PM ^
Sorry to hear that OGB; my condolences
September 25th, 2020 at 12:57 PM ^
My condolences. A caregiver that goes home-to-home is a sure vector if they are not following safe protocols. Scary indeed.
September 24th, 2020 at 6:39 PM ^
Stay safe.
September 24th, 2020 at 7:54 PM ^
This is not good. I hope the best for him. Just got home from a 2 week stint in Florida treating COVID patients and their X Rays and CTs are not at all promising.
September 24th, 2020 at 10:54 PM ^
Feel awful for the kid. I really does seem to have a range of effects on people, and my guess is we'll see this spectrum in athletes over the season. Most will be fine but a couple will have serious negative consequences, and we'll just sort of amble along in this malaise for the rest of the year.
September 25th, 2020 at 11:36 AM ^
but clay travis said college kids can't get it...
