Brace yourselves: Rivalry Game vs. Rutgers Possibly a Night Game

Submitted by rob f on September 1st, 2019 at 5:56 PM

After last night's game at The Big House I spoke to a friend who also happens to be on the Michigan Stadium staff, he brought up the possibility that the Sept. 28th game vs Rutger might be played under the lights.  He stated that the possibility was addressed with Big House staff at a meeting he attended this past week, that the Big Ten was pushing for it to be a night game.  They were told in the meeting to be prepared for the possibility, that no final decision was likely for at least a couple weeks.

I am putting this out here at confidence level 10 in regards to my source, with the caveat that he emphasized the fact that no decision has been made yet, merely that it is a distinct possibility.

Any MGoInsiders out there with more information, please fill us in!

Uuuuggghhh..... I hope it’s not a night game simply because of logistics. I don’t mind night games if we are home watching on TV but the drive home (1/2 way between Holland & Grand Rapids) is brutal. If that happens (3:30 game), we’ll prob do the motel thing.

If I had my choice, I prefer the 3:30 games. Lots of time for tailgating and meandering around the stadium, watching warm ups etc and you can still get home at a decent time.

I hope this happens. I love the night games. I totally understand the logistics complaint for those who attend the games in person, but as an out of state alum who only attends one game per season, I don’t have that issue.

For me, with two boys ages 12 and 8, much of my Saturdays are spent watching or coaching my kids’ various sports. For noon games, I DVR and go on media black out and then watch with my wife in the evening. Very stressful since I am afraid that I will somehow find out the score. For night games, this isn’t an issue.

I think Seth brought this up years ago - the fact that Rutgers played in the first intercollegiate football game (the reason we're celebrating 150 years this year) in 1869 is a great excuse to make a big celebration of the Michigan-Rutgers game. Princeton is in the Ivy League so largely irrelevant, so Rutgers should be celebrated for this (and only this) season. But the Big Ten schedulers put Rutgers on the road in the week before the Nov 6 anniversary, and they have a bye week after.

Rutgers was the first, and Michigan is the winningest. It's a perfect matchup to get hyped up about. If Michigan didn't also have ND and OSU at home it would be an obvious Gameday choice.
