How can Michigan get to the Sugar Bowl I thought was strictly a B12/SEC NY6 game?

Good point. Michigan (or any other Big Ten team) can not be invited to the Sugar Bowl this year. Big Ten teams can play in the Sugar Bowl only in years when it is also a semifinal game.
So next year, but not this year.

At least they will get a few hundred requests now that they beat ND

Well of course they will beat aPOSu now that they have no shot @ the Rose thanks to the debacle @ Pedo State.

Don’t believe we have ever played in the Cotton Bowl. Would be a pretty solid consolation prize.

Yes, I like that idea. The opponent will be the G5 representative--SMU or Appalachian State, most likely. Not sure I like that particular idea.
Unfortunately, it's looking pretty likely that the Cotton Bowl team will be the Wisconsin/Minnesota winner. They have to take the highest-ranked team once all of the other NY6 bowls have taken their representatives, so we are looking at either SEC #5 or Big Ten #3.
Here's my thinking:
Playoff: SEC #1, Big Ten #1, SEC #2, Clemson
Rose & Sugar take Big Ten #2 v Pac 12 #1 and SEC #3 v B12 #1 respectively
Orange: Wake Forest v (probably) SEC #4
Cotton will take the next best team plus the best G5 champion. Most likely Big Ten #3, but it will certainly have to be a top-10 team.
So OSU/PSU winner to the playoff, loser to the Rose, and West division champion to the Cotton. I think the only way that Michigan moves up to the top 10 is if they end up 10-2.

Ranked FBS team or not, I'm never going to be able to handle another Michigan loss to Appalachian State!
October 29th, 2019 at 8:11 PM ^
Yep, and I'm not sure playing SMU in Dallas would be much better.

That is a WIDE range of bowl games listed there...
