Blake Appreciation Thread

Submitted by The Wonderful 135 on

I know this was covered alot yesterday, but when I wake up this morning to a focal story on College Football Final about the death threats and suicide suggestions that are being thrown Blake's way, it sort of pisses me off.  So this thread is meant to counter that as much as possible.

Hell of a season so far. Hell of a game. I'm glad your with us.

Shit happens. Do you best to brush off the morons. True Blue will stand behind you.

Keep up the great work. And GO BLUE!

Are you fucking kidding me with this shit?!?

I agree that death threats and all that is just horrible but the kid screwed up big time and lost the game for UM. I, for one, will never forgive him for this loss. It may have set UM's program back a few years: no shot at CFB playoffs, probably no shot at Big 10 title,  loss of mojo, loss of media respect, become national joke for choking game away and probably costs UM a few elite recruits for this cycle which will hurt a few years down the road.

The death threats are completely uncalled for but lets not go over board on trying to absolve the kid in his part in this embarrassing loss. He messed up and UM lost the game because of it. Period.

Why not be a bigger fan/man and rise above? He is the best punter we've had since Zoltan and he has aided the team far more than hindered. I appreciate his skill. How about we question the idea to punt or the play Cala that led to the fourth down or the coaches for not fully preparing for this in practice, etc. instead your idea is to not appreciate a young man who would field that punt 90% of the time. Asinine, really.

To look at the bigger picture. A horrible play happened. Then a few assholes made death threats. I don't think it's a crime to express appreciation and perspective so that guy feels some support. I doubt any one of us feel as bad as he does, and we can't go back, only forward.

He did NOT "singlehandedly destry our season"! The snap was low, there were MANY penalties in  the game that really cost us, the offense wasn't able to get the 1st down, there were several 3rd and longs that didn't work out for us. Last I checked football was a TEAM sport and we have an excellent punter who made ONE mistake (albiet a big one). Out loss yesterday sucs and it will take a very long time to get over it, but the season is NOT destroyed. You need to get a grip.

I'm sure O'Neill is over 18 so he's not officially a "kid" anymore is he?

I'm not saying he should be drawn and quartered. The death threats against him are reprehensible but he is in no way deserving of an "Appreciation Thread" when his gaffe was the most significant (and memorable) reason UM lost a very important game to Sparty.

I did not send him any Twitter threats, I don't "hate" him but I see no reason to try to salve Blake's feelings. He messed up, UM lost, let him accept the consequences of failing at the one thing he is on scholarship for: catch the ball and kick it.

I bet you're the kind of dad where if your kid makes a mistake and costs his team the game you bawl him out for disgracing the family and make him walk home alone.

Edit - also, you called him a kid in your first dumbass post so using your second dumbass post to criticize someone for calling him a kid is even more dumbass.

Lets admit it.  This fanbase has completely lowered their expectations.   The season is effectively over.  Virtually no shot at the Big Ten Championship.  No shot at the playoffs.  Already a two loss team, so a good bowl won't be coming our way.

The Michigan fans I knew years ago would whloeheartedly tell any that such a result is unacceptable.  Now, we've all become whipping boys who are saying, "Well, it was better than last year.  Maybe next year!"

It is truly sad how far this program's expectations have fallen in just a decade.  MSU continues to be a power while Michigan flounders in defeat.  Northwestern showed yesterday that they are not an elite team.  This Michigan team hasn't beaten anyone of note.

Maybe John Bacon's title was right.  "The Rise, Fall, and Return (to the average of the past decade) of Michigan football."

Wow. Where did you pull that out of. We can still win every game on our schedule with a new year bowl win. It is not like we lost by more than 3 TDs. Did you realize that Sparty was mad last year that we got a TD in the garbage time. We couldn't even score a TD against them for two years. We almost won yesterday. We are not average. You know who is not a great team? The team that needed a dumb QB to spike the ball on 4th down to win and the same team to need a miracle lucky play to win a game. By the way, you have the name spelled wrong. It is Tom Brady.

It's time for you to get realistic. What do you want to do? Fire the coach? Pull the scholarship? Chant taunts at the players who screw up? We all expect this program to get better, but losses happen.this team is on a significant upturn and people-- even the crowd who says "back in the good ole days we didn't put up with this shit"--need some perspective.

I hope you, and the rest of the self sabotaging fans, have the chance to run into Blake and see if you have the power to explicitly say, "hey, big Michigan fan over here. Thanks for losing the game for us, and ruining our season." I bet you, you won't. Or you'll say take your 80 yard punt and get out of here. This loss was terrible, no bones about it. I'm still all about having him as our punter.

What about Hill not covering a fullback out of the backfield, what about Rudock overthrowing wide open Jehu, what about the numerous third and longs we let them convert. Point being this is a team loss, that's how the staff will present it, players know that, both the ones here and recruits. You can't put this game on one person. The ship is pointed in the right direction, we still have a ways to go. I don't think we can get set back many more years than we already were coming into this season.

The point of accountability is to improve the transparency of all of the inputs into the playing time decisions which are made to make the team better today.  To  improve incentives and rewards.  It's not to enable a myopic game of backwards-lookinig gotcha.  One (collosal) situation play error by Blake does not change the result of the calculation as to who is our best punter going forward.

Too many here want to play backwards-looking gotcha.  I want Michigan to be the best it can be today and in the future.

It's just very hard to relate to your post. These are student athletes. Lord knows most of us have screwed up something pretty bad in our lives at some point. The world is not going to end because of this. Life is about comebacks, not ruminating over bad but weird mistakes. Sometimes it's better to take it a little easier on yourself and others.

You are being hysterical.  Setting our program back?  Honestly??  You must be out of your mind.  If anything embarrasses us in the national media, it is the online reaction of so many of us.  TWIS would have every right to devote this week's entire edition to Michigan (fans).

As for criticizing O'Neill any more than simply "he made a bad play," you should remember that he is a student playing for your enjoyment for free.

As Zoltan Mesko tweeted last night, "I don't care what any college player does to your Saturday afternoon mood. They are all student-athletes and they don't owe you a thing.

I remember some jerk in the stadium 15 rows behind me when Gardner lost his mind and threw the interception from the endzone against NotreDame several years ago.  While we were all distraught over the play, this guy immediately spewed forth vitriol.  I can't imagine where this shit comes from.  I think there are some among us that need to take a break from college football, or maybe all sports.  Maybe they need to spend time in therapy.  I don't know.

For me, I love this team, I love the coach, and I love the punter who has had as much to do with our defensive success than anyone.

Also, 80 yard punt.

Cost us the game, he has been an asset to this team. People make mistakes, punters make mistakes, get over it. "Never forgive" is a bit harsh and almost as childish as the death threats. If our QB could throw an accurate ball, farther than 15 yards, we wouldn't have even been in that situation. The fact is we are way better than we thought we would be. Imagine how good we will be, when Gentry or Peters or even O'korn gets coached up enough to be our starter. The biggest thing that makes us look bad to me, is this fucking "little brother" bullshit, not a punter that screwed up. This loss may be what will give us that extra push, "puts steel in our spines", and hopefully kick OSU's ass. Go Blue!
