Lets start the list of potential replacements at Penn State. I'll lead off by throwing David Cutcliffe out there.

I know that is the rumor going around, but that would not be good for PSU if even half of the things the have been written about him and his attitude in the past two years are true. I don't know him personally, but he sounds like a control freak, "in your face" type of coach, which isn't what PSU needs when the university is still trying to rebuild good will with the national public.
Plus, I know it's Rutgers and all, but he wasn't even that great of a coach there. He never won a Big East championship, his only double digit win season came 6 years before he bailed to coach Tampa Bay, and the year before he left Rutgers, they went 4-8.
December 31st, 2013 at 11:10 PM ^
you can't just say "yeah, I know it's Rutgers" and then ignore all the context
a double digit win season there was borderline farcical before it actually happened. Even a 4-8 season there would've been considered a success.

Upvoted you, but I'll clarify. I wasn't ignoring that accomplishment as much as I acknowledged it and dismissed the level of its importance. Yeah, an 11 win season at Rutgers is something of an accomplishment. It's nice, but there is that popular phrase around here that even a blind squirrel finds a nut. Where did he take the program since then? Nowhere, really. They hovered around the top of the middle third of the Big East for a few more years, never finished a season ranked since, and ultimately showed no signs of progression before he lucked into a pro job in Tampa, where he has spent the last two years making a complete ass out of himself to other players and coaches and has brought an attitude that had turned nearly his entire team against him during training camp of this year

A cursory look at BSD shows that at least a faction of the Penn State fanbase absolutely hates the idea of Schiano as their HC.

There's another aspect from the PR angle as well. He was at Penn State's defensive staff from 1990-95 with Jerry Sandusky. In the past, he's wisely chosen a somewhat elaborate "no comment" when asked, "You worked for six years under Jerry Sandusky. Did you have any inkling of what was going on?"
Bringing Shiano in as HC would re-open that whole line of questioning and would be a PR nightmare to deal with.

Saban had won a NC at LSU before he went to the pros. Spurrier had won a NC at Florida and made Florida a perennial Top 10 program before he went to the pros.
Carrol had way more success in the pros then Schiano did. Carroll was head coach of the Jets in '94 and went 6-10. He spent the next couple of years as the DC in San Fran. He was head coach of the patriots for 3 years. In those 3 years the partriots went : 10-6 won the AFC east, 9-7 wildcard, 8-8. He did take over the Patriots after Parcells had guided them to a Super Bowl.

That would be crazy considering the two more years of bowl ineligibility. It would mean that Golden would have only coached 2 bowl games in his first 10 seasons of coaching.

Did I miss the "/s" on this one?
BOB took over arguably one of - if not the - worst situation in the history of a major college football program. Moreover, his professional aspirations - whether formally or informally communicated - were always directed toward the pros. As far as I am concerned, the guy is an incredible coach, did wonders for PSU when they needed some salvation, and is realizing his professional dream (coach in the NFL).

Kids: This is why you commit to a school, and not a coach.

Kids commit to both...a school and a coaching staff. One has a slightly longer and more stable track record than the other.
Whether we like it or not, it's the nature of the beast. These programs and the athletes involved in them are not static objects. We cannot assume that simply because they were here one season, they will be here the next. That's not how any businesses or organizations works, and it's not how college football works. It's not "purer" than any other institution when it comes to persons' personal and / or professional aspirations.

He sold guys like Hackenberg on coming there and is now bolting after 2 years. I'm more curious to see what happens to their current players and commits than who the coach will be.

Do they have anyone coming in that OSU would even want? Last time I looked at BSD, they were going wild because they'd had a 2* commit. That being said, I don't follow recruiting, so I have no idea what the state of our class is, or whether Urban would snake oil Penn State.
January 1st, 2014 at 1:55 AM ^
If the Glenville dou commits, we will have one more player than we have room for of the 85 scholarship players. From then on, every additional player will require someone else to transfer or attrition. Other players OSU has interest in includes: Tony Brown, Solomon Thomas, and Malik McDowell. The only players OSU would have interest in from PSU are Gesick or Holley since these players were 50/50 before between us and PSU. Urban wants one more OL too but I doubt we get one.

Well they have a 4 star DT Thomas Holley. We can grab him if McDowell doesn't work out.
January 1st, 2014 at 1:19 AM ^
Heck try and get him even if McDowell comes here too. Michigan needs line depth and Hand isn't coming, so I'll take another DL. McDowell and Holley could play the 2 inside line positions.

Perfect. Tough, firebrand coach, who happens to like Sinatra and pasta. Fits PSU perfectly.
December 31st, 2013 at 10:30 PM ^
They want Franklin, but I don't think Franklin will bite. Narduzzi would be a great fall back option for PSU if it's a match for both sides.
