Big Ten upset at SEC over visits rule, justification "a joke"

Submitted by Kewaga. on

A vote on this, as part of a comprehensive package of football recruiting reforms, is expected to take place today in Indianapolis by the NCAA Division I Council.

Also included in the proposal: adding a December signing day, so committed players won't get bombarded by other schools wanting them to "flip" them before February; reducing satellite camps (aka the Jim Harbaugh Rule); adding a 10th full-time assistant coach; and disallowing programs to hire an IAWP (Individual Associated With Prospect) after landing said prospect.

The conferences appear to have found consensus on all of the above -- except for adding April-June official visits. The SEC and other leagues in the South are reluctant to sign off on the change.

It's obvious why: College football's ruling class longs to protect its turf. Those coaches don't want prospects from the South visiting Big Ten campuses when the weather is nice.

"It's like Trump," one Big Ten official said. "Except the SEC wants to build a giant wall around the Southeast."

Not surprised they are fighting it....but parents of these recruits are getting smarter.  Better to have a great education AND good coaching.  The NEW 10 Year War, and the heyday of the B1G is upon us.

Pretty clear to me that the SEC, and its proxy the NCAA, are scared to DEATH of Harbaugh and are doing everything in their power to box him in.  Virtually every rule change passed was aimed at limiting his exposure to those precious boys down south so they wont dream of travelling north of the Mason-Dixon line to attend college.

NCaa didn't want to look for their "stapler" because their boss (essecee) told them they were going to have to move them to the basement if they didn't listen

I thought his proposed compromise of June was fine, EXCEPT, thats when camps are suppossed to be and given the fight over camps, you just know they'll get mad about schools paying recruits to visit during camp season.

At some point, it's time for the SEC to just call a spade a spade and say, "Look the rules work really well for us, we don't want them changed, and if you want better prospects then work with high schools in your area to develop their rules to allow things like year round competition the way we do, because as long as we have the power to stop you guys making rules that would be a benefit for the whole system instead of just us, that is EXACTLY what we're going to do."

Reading the below article, it looks like there may have been a game of we'll allow the camp restriction if you give us early visits going on behind the scenes.

Fuck these lying, cheating a-holes.

Anybody who commits to Bert Bielema and going to Arkansas is not likely going to class anyway.  Their phony "we care about the kids" to protect their recruits, their money, and the coverup to their cheating is wearing real, real thin.

Send a battery of lawyers to Mississippi, file a bunch of suits against Ole Miss, and a bunch against the NCAA for monoplistic practices, and crush them like a bug on a windshield.

They'll be too busy spending time with their families to even know what him them.

I think Michigan's use of the IAWP is overblown. The players that would have been affected would have been Rashan Gary and Devin Bush Jr., and I think those recruits may have ended up at Michigan even if Partridge and Bush Sr. were not hired to staff. Partridge would have still been close to Michigan with Jabrill Peppers here. Devin Bush Jr. had two teammates and close friends that were committed to Michigan (Metellus and Gil). You can build a pipeline to a school without hiring the HS coach. And with the 10th assistant coach being approved, you will probably see some schools use that extra position to get around this rule.

Michigan's staff is pretty much set now so I think moving forward this is not going to be something that comes up as much. It just means HS football coaches are going to have a much harder time moving to college.

This is actually a pretty good article on all of the proposals: http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/19149025/why-stakes-high-ncaa-hq-week

Essentially:

  1. Cannot hire inidividuals associated with prospects (IAWP): Only applies if you try to hire someone for a non-coaching position.

Do we like it: Probably.  Harbuagh has hired some people which would not be allowed under this rule, but it seems probable that this is abused much more by other programs.

  2. Reduce number of days, when, and where satellite camps can be performed: Essentially reduces satellite camps from 15-days in June or July to just 10 days in June.  Camps must take place at college campuses rather than high school.

Do we like it.  No.  This blog has gone over this many times, but satellite camps only hurt coaches who opt not to participate as fully as possible.  This is obviously just a way of reducing the ability for teams to contact/form relationships with recruits which aren't already geographically close to campus or that have enough money to travel.

  3. Allow official visits to be earlier: Currently official visits can only occur on/after September 1st of a recruit's senior year of high school.  This would allow officials to occur starting on/after April 1st of the recruit's junior year in high school.  Effectively, this gives an extra 6-months to have an official visit.

Do we like it.  Yes.  We all know recruiting is happening earlier-and-earlier.  The inabiltiy to host a recruit on campus until their senior year is a handicap to those teams in less talented states (i.e. most of the B10).  This helps mitigate that somewhat.

  4. Allow a 10th coach: Allow a 10th on-field coaching position.

Do we like it.  Yes.  It doesn't help or hurt Michigan any more than any other school except in-so-far as Harbaugh has a good track record of hiring excellent people.  So the more excellent people that are allowed to recruit and coach players, the better.

  5. Limit scholarships to 25/year: A hard cap of only 25 scholarships/year can be given out.  It apparently gets a bit tricker when it comes to walk-on players.  Players that enroll early can still count to the year before their class or count towards the same year as the non-early enrollee players.

Note: The SEC is proposing an amendment which would effectively make medical hardship players that never played in a game not count towards the 25 cap.

Do we like it: Generally, yes.  Obviously Harbaugh likes to get as many kids as possible but even this year we're going to have less than 85 full scholarship players on the team come the Florida game.  So, this shouldn't really affect Michigan too much.  It should curb the Ole Miss 37-man recruiting classes which is good.  The devil will be in the details on this one.  This could be good but if it's too easy to get around then it'll be a slight annoyance to Michigan while having no affect on "certain" other schools.

  6. Longer summer dead period: Classify the last Wednesday of June-July 24th as a dead period and classify August as a dead period.  Currently most of that is a quiet period.

Do we like it: NO!  I'm surprised this one isn't discussed more.  This takes out a huge swath of time during which recruits cannot even unofficially visit a school (which they can do during a quiet period).  Michigan, since we're away from the greatest density of talent, needs as much face-time as possible.  Changing all those days to a dead period significantly reduces our ability to recruit kids during the summer.

One man's opinion - this is negative for the B10 and Michigan.  We'll have to see if it passes.  Based off of absolutely no information whatsoever, I expect it will pass with supporting votes from the SEC, ACC, half of the B12, and some P12 votes (i.e. similar to the last rule change that was implemented).

Summer official visits are very inconvenient for high school kids. It's easier for them to go during football season and the school year, fur shore

Completely disagree. If I have a test to study for and an official visit to make across the country at the same time, I need to make sure I am prepared for travel and I may be possibly distracted/excited at the prospect of going somewhere. Doing those things with less responsibility at that time will ease the stress level of the recruit in my opinion.

the only downsides are that campus is pretty dead in summer, and it runs the risk of being misleading in the way i've accused the SEC of - rushing the recruits in during summer so they don't realize how grinding the winter can be. SEC in contrast tells recruits the north is an icebox year round

How do they know that you're hiring a coach to get a player? With partridge, we probably hired him to get Gary but also to get other new jersey players and he's also a good coach. Our linebackers improved a ton. So now we can never hire a coach at img or Paramus again?

BigHouseBoyz

April 14th, 2017 at 3:12 PM ^

The new rule states that they must be hired to a full-time on-field coaching position.  No analyst, recruiting coordinator, etc type positions.  So yes we can hire an IMG or Paramus or Cass Tech coach they just need to coach.

This will probably hurt high school coaches from getting positions like Partridge did and then have that turn into an on-field coach.  I wonder if a HS coach will challenge this rule in courts?

Why can't they focus on bagman enforcement to take places like Ohio state and Alabama out of the running for 7 5 stars a year and oversigning? It's a joke. Sankey is on the rules committee so nothing will ever get investigated down there. They aren't even investigating laremy tunsil.

I see these changes as mostly good for Michigan, especially official visits during the time when this state is warm, in bloom, and recruits can come have a good time with less daily responsibility on them. Big win there. The oversigning curb will help as well as long as it is enforced somehow.

If official visits in April- June get approved, and camp can only happen in June, can a school issue 100's of invites to out of state players for official visits with the visits happening the same time you're running  a camp?  In other words, can Michigan offer official visits to 50 kids from Georgia and while they're visiting participate in one of Michigan's camps?   Kind of like a sattelite camp on your own campus.  Is there a limit to the number of official visits you can host during the year?

would be great and hope they put it in place by next year. I believe the 10th assistance has been given the go ahead for next year.

I cant believe that a rule like allowing official visits during April through June is turned down. That is so damn pathetic. I didn't read all of the comments above but I'd love to find out what the excuse is from the SEC. It is obvious this is a great time for recruits to check out other places around the country and see the real world/civilization away from the shithole south. I'm rooting for all B1G teams to just start attacking the south like mad. Even the bucs. End their little run on the overall timeline and make ESPN look like a joke with their SEC network. These new rules are clear evidence that Jim is really making an impact. Wait until they Alabama's ass not too far down the road. Dry land is not a myth, I've seen it.
