Belleville Coach Crowell Suspended by MHSAA

Title basically says it all. He is suspended until 2024. The suspension is for violating the "undue influence" rule for driving a player to practice. I know there has been significant tension between Harbaugh and Crowell over the years, and maybe this is a situation where there's a lot more smoke and this is just what they could prove, but taking away a person's livelihood for giving a kid a ride to practice seems...excessive...

So I don't know anything about HS football in Michigan but I would assume that the youth football programs are coached by coaches who also coach at the high school level. If that that is the case, Im sure recruiting is happening all over the place. Now Crowell may be the most brash about it but the clutching of pearls because recruiting is happening at the high school level is hilarious to me.

He was not suspended for giving a kid a ride. That’s the straw man take. There are also other issues, like the 7 on 7 in Pennsylvania, and there is another shoe that is said to be dropping soon.

Knowing Harbaugh he doesn’t like the way Crowell operates and knowing Harbaugh he doesn’t hide that very well.

I have always thought “private” or recruiting schools should play in their own division.

My senior year we had a one D1 athlete and several D3 athletes that all grew up blocks from each other and lost to a team in the Qtr finals that had nine D1 athletes that commuted up to two hours to their high school and joined the team as Sophomores.

Before we get all sanctimonious, let's remember that multiple current and recent past contributors to Michigan's team have gone the "recruiting HS" route.  For elite athletes, this is a career path. If their current school does not have the coaching, resources or competition to develop their skills, do you expect them to simply accept it and stunt their career?

If an administrator at an elite prep school gives out academic scholarships to inner-city kids and arranges transportation for them, they are a hero. If an AD or coach does the same thing for an athlete, it is somehow not cool. I disagree with that.
