Baylor considering vote on Briles return

Under consideration: Bringing back Art Briles.

Really? This is seriously still being debated? The fact that they are even TALKING about this looks horrible on the university. They are saying that Baylor didn't have a Title 9 officer, pleading ignorance on how to handle the cases.

There was an article last week about how a guy with an accusation against him was dismissed from Baylor without a hearing, and their NEW coach apparently told someone that if this player enrolled somewhere else, the rape investigation would be dropped. This school is like a zombie. Even a scratch and you'll soon look the other way when it comes to ethical behavior.

I don't agree with this, but I'm not surprised. The donors in question don't care about how Baylor wins, only that they win. You can't look at this rationally or through the lens of a Michigan fan. We have a history of winning, they do not. We have had many successful coaches. They have had one. We are a historical powerhouse in football, they have had a few really good seasons. This is all they had and they lost it (and really fast). It's not surprising they are trying to figure out how to hold on. Let's not get too worked up about this until an actual discussion happens where people have to show their faces in public.

I would bet anything that the thought process of the people involved went like this: "Shit we got caught." "Can we get away with doing nothing?" "Hmmm probably not. We at least have to fire Briles" "Ok, fired Briles. We have now done the right thing and people will forgive us" "Shit, how are we going to win football games?!" "You know who's good at winning football games...Briles. I should call him..."

So far the only punishment to Baylor's football program is that they decided they will probably fire their HC. Who's talking about punishing them if they bring him back? It looks to me like Baylor is completely unafraid of the NCAA and the Big XII. There hasn't even been a hint that they considered self-imposing any punishments.

I don't advocate this, but I will not be suprised at all if this is what occurs. Briles is a great coach, better than what BU can probably get right now. Briles will be toxic for programs that would have originally thought about hiring him (i.e. Texas). It is best for both parties to do a one year 'punishment' and join back up. Baylor has the taste of winning now...I just don't see them giving that up in this highly competitive/money-rich NCAA environment.

no, it's not best for both parties. it's only best for briles. Baylor absolutely can not bring him back. I know you said you don't advocate for this, so I'm not jumping your opinion, just simply stating that this cannot, nor should not happen on any level. however, if there is any merit to the "no title 9" officer and therefore no proper training, briles sounds like he has a settlement coming his way.

"damaged goods" as a coach (for wont of a better metaphor).  If he were to stay on, at least in the short term, recruiting will be a huge uphill battle for him.  Many parents now don't want to send their kids there due to the toxic atmosphere and questionable leadership at the school.  So, I'd be pretty shocked if he were to stay on.  Not completely shocked, because greed and the thirst for winning in college football knows no bounds.

Typically how it goes with these donors. Few guys that provide a ton of money to the university.

Whether or not it's unlikely, the rumblings underneat the surface at Baylor make this situation look horrible AGAIN.

What is the acceptable victory-to-rape ratio? Let's say you have a coach that is virtually guaranteed to bring you 10 wins a year. How many rapes should be allowable with that win total? I am thinking 6 sounds about right. 10-to-6, wins-to-rapes. That means, however, that if Briles has a terrible year and brings only 5 wins, he is also down to 3 acceptable rapes. But I SWEAR TO GOD, even a 4th rape under this scenario will NOT STAND!!!

that they shouldn't bring Briles back and wait for them to contribute again than it is to risk the losses all the bad publicity will bring.

Briles in 2017 and beyond will not get the same results he had been getting. Recruiting will take a step or two back and he won't inherit a great roster. He won't be able to cut the same corners to overcome that. Aside from all that, it's foolish to think he's the only qualified coach out there. Was the program going to fold if he had left for another job?

"Hey everyone, remember that thing we did that was right? What if we didn't do that and instead did something far less logical and transparently self-serving?"

A person with knowledge of the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the discussions, said there is indeed a faction of voices within the school’s Board of Regents still supporting Briles and urging the school to bring him back. But those voices, the person said, were few in number at this point and considered to be on the margins.

Let's hope those voices remain on the margins and are unsuccessful in turning this termination into a suspension, because if they were successful, then I would hate to think what you would need to do at Baylor in order to actually be fired period, other than fail to turn a profit, that is. Seriously, what the hell is in the Kool-Aid in Waco that disallows learning and seeks to marginalize victims even more?
