Feels like I've time-traveled back to around 1980 and I'm in a Miller Lite commercial with Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner.

Winning Wolverines

Exactly!  We have some momentum now.  This is a young team, so each win is a big confidence builder!  It's always tough to win the tournament from the loser's bracket, but at least all of the top 4 seeds lost their opening games, so that can help if we can continue to advance.

I hope we get a rematch with OSU next!

Stayin’ Alive for NCAA Tournament: Michigan - 5 Illinois - 4

Michigan’s baseball team (39-17; 17-8 in conference) faced elimination from the Big Ten Tournament today. After getting one-hit and losing to Ohio State 2-1 yesterday (the Wolverines’ third loss in four games this season to the Buckeyes), Michigan needed to beat Illinois today or possibly end its season, waiting on the bubble for an NCAA tournament bid.

Trailing 4-3 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Wolverines completed their comeback with a walk-off double from First-Team, All-Big-Ten DH Jordan Nwogu who’d been hitless on the day before then (after getting the only hit against Ohio State), to score the tying and winning runs.

In yesterday’s Big Ten Tournament games, each of the top four seeds lost. A loss today would have made the Wolverines 3-7 in their last ten games, including a win over 9-43-1 Eastern Michigan. Despite finishing half a game behind Indiana for the regular-season conference championship, Michigan’s current RPI (43), strength of schedule (130) and non-conference strength of schedule (206) put them dangerously close to the bottom of the bubble for an NCAA bid if they’d lost today.

If Michigan loses its next game and one of the bottom-four seeds wins the tournament, then that team still might knock Michigan out of the NCAA field.  As of now, Illinois (36-19, RPI-29, SOS-58, NON-CONF SOS-20), Indiana (36-20, RPI-32, SOS-55, NON-CONF SOS-27) and Nebraska (29-20, RPI-35, SOS-44, NON-CONF SOS-3) all have somewhat better resumes than Michigan. Still, today's win makes Michigan closer to earning an NCAA bid. LINK

It might be hard for the Big Ten to get more than four bids to the NCAA Tournament. As of now, Baseball America has Michigan as a three seed facing second seeded Dallas Baptist in its opening game in Oklahoma State’s regional (where Army is projected as the four seed, so be concerned – be very concerned).

D1 Baseball has Michigan as one of last five teams in the field, just ahead of Virginia and UCF in the field and Oklahoma and UC-Irvine as the first two teams out of the field. They project Michigan as a three seed facing second-seeded California in the Georgia Tech regional in Atlanta.

Cancellation of Michigan’s early-season game at UC-Irvine could be a slight factor in determining whether Michigan gets an NCAA Tournament bid.  The Anteaters are 35-16 (RPI-49, SOS-138, NON-CONF SOS-121) ahead of a three-game series on the road against 19-34 UC-Riverside to close the Big West regular season.

I loved the fire Bakich post because it exemplifies a lot of fans. They get up, they get down. So what happens today, UM is losing to Illinois after losing yesterday and 'fan' decides he can't take it anymore and wants to fire the coach. Great stuff.

Let me tell you a quick and true story. So the Pats played the Lions earlier in the regular season. I have to leave to go back home at halftime and on the way back I stop at some food establishment after the game. I run into a guy with a New England Patriots shirt.

I strike up a conversation with him and he is really down. Seemed upset after the Patriots had lost. So I mentioned something about Hightower looking slow on the perimeter and he proceeded to dump on Brady. Told me he was done. After a couple of minutes telling me that Brady was done he then proceeded to tell me that he wished Belichick would also go. I got the impression he was a Garoppolo guy. I tried to talk him off the ledge and told him that Edelman would come back but he wasn't having any of it. Brady was done and Belichick should retire.

Well you get the point. If you catch fans at their low point they will say almost anything.
