Baseball falls to Cal Poly

Submitted by Sac Fly on

Day two of Michigan's California trip didn't go as planned with a 5-1 loss.

Adcock had a shaky first inning where he struggled with control walking the bases loaded and nearly giving up a 3-run shot that went all the way to the track, but was able to get out of the jam with just 1 run allowed.

Things didn't get an better for Adcock in the second. He walked two of his first three batters before going breaking ball crazy and getting out of the inning with no damage. After a strong bounce back that looked like Adcock had thrown out of it with 5 strikeouts in a row, he started the 4th walking two batters and put up a 3-0 count before getting the hook.

The kicker: Adcock walked 9 batters but didn't allow a single hit.

Jayce Vancena entered the game and got out of a bases loaded jam with only 1 run allowed, but things came unravelled in the 6th. Vancena walked two batters and hit another with the bags loaded before the Mustangs singled in 2 more.

Michigan's bats just never got going. They did threaten in the 9th getting a run in with a few on before Bivens struckout.

The Wolverines fall to 5-1 on the year. They're headed to Santa Clara next for a Sunday night game.

How was the umpiring, from your point of view?  All I see is the box score, but giving up 13 walks in a game makes you wonder if Michigan was getting any borderline calls to go their way.  On the other hand, there were also 11 K's, so who knows.  It seems Cal Poly did a lot of standing around in the batters box (only 15 of their 41 batters put a ball into play).

One note on today's game: Ako Thomas wasn't in the lineup for the first time this season. Bivens moved to second, Lugbauer played third, and Hector Gutierrez got his first start, at DH.

Thomas has had a tough year. 1-for-11 at the plate, an error on only 4 fielding attempts. It is promising to see he has taken 5 walks, but seeing as how their two big recruits have either seen little time or none at all they may have rushed Thomas.
