The Barwis Effect is back (?)!

With the Red Wings -

The rumor also notes that Barwis was heavily recruited by Yzerman and the Red Wings will be completely revamping their program.

This should lead to strong 3rd periods right?

Barwis may in fact be the single most overhyped 'thing' ever at the University of Michigan.  Maybe Henson, but at least he backed most of it up.

I like Barwis, but while he's a good S&C coach I don't see him as being the end all be all the hype made him out to be.

This isn't his fault, the hype was over the top, and unreasonable. 'EEEE BARWIS' was a bit silly.

I'll always have fond thoughts for the guy for his work with Brock Mealer though.

Barwis is fine. He has his methodology he believes in, with some merit, and was forward thinking in some regards.

His biggest problems were: 1) he put himself out front, when that isn't the role a S&C should play; 2) some of his methods didn't align with actual scientific evidence; 3) he hyped many of his methods as if he was the only one to profess them rather than pretty standard thought; 4) he treated his methods like they were the only methods for success

Those things put him at odds with many in his industry. He's a fine coach. I don't really blame him for any of UM failures. But he didn't live up to the hype, which he is partially to blame for getting.

Strength and conditioning coach feels like the most overhyped dude on a football staff. Michigan’s linemen look too fat! (Barwis comes in). Now they are ripped! Look at those pics! (OL can’t block well). Michigan’s linemen aren’t fat enough!

Who is the best team in the NFL, and who is their strength coach? Yep.

Remember though, why was he hyped in the first place?  Yes, he is a great self promoter. He was doing vids. Hyping guys up, that's contageous.

BUT, to me, the single biggest reason why Mike Barwis became a meme, before we knew what memes really were (I can has Miek Barwis?), was we were coming out of Lloyd Carr HIT training darkness. 1) We never really knew what was going on, but we'd see these other programs promoting their new S&C stuff. People would wonder why UM players weren't world beating track stars as well, like in Columbus, etc.  2) The handful of S&C guys on the boards seemingly all took exception to whatever training methods and techniques Michigan was employing under Lloyd.

So a combination of this gregarious, poundin' plates, gravel voiced, fist pounding dude who is now making videos showing us these crazy new techniques...  basically, we were thirsty and someone gave us a drink. You can argue that maybe Zima wasn't the greatest drink at the time, but we were just happy to have anything.

Henson was fantastic.  His junior year should have been national title level if the defense wasn't terrible.

The Purdue and Northwestern games were GERG level disasters.  Those aren't on Henson.

And he's the last Michigan QB to win in Columbus.

Well I guess this is not breaking news. But I liked him with Michigan and I like him with the Wings.

Barwis has earneda very strong rep in the hockey world. Started working with hockey guys when he arrived at Michigan and looks like he found a good match.

Let's set the record straight on Barwis:

A S&C coach is hired to sculpt and mold the players according to the design of the head coach, NOT according to the S&C's personal preferences.

Barwis was hired by Rich Rod to sculpt smaller, faster players, because that's what Rich Rod's scheme is designed around, both on offense and defense. Had Barwis been hired by Carr, Moeller, or Schembechler, he would have sculpted the players according to the traditional "Michigan Man" image.

Some of you seem to be blaming Barwis as if the idea of smaller, faster players was all his idea, when it was the order coming down from Rich Rod.  The players weren't inferior in size because Barwis didn't know what he was doing; they were inferior in size because Rich Rod was going for speed, right or wrong.

It's a bit like the defensive woes we had under Rich Rod.  Some of you rip into Greg Robinson as if he knew nothing about defense. But Robinson was a farily solid defensive mind, and demonstrated so elsewhere.  The problem really wasn't G. Robinson; the problem was that Rich Rod (for reasons that still baffle me) didn't have the brains to look for a 3-3-5 DC to run a 3-3-5 defense, and instead hired a 4-3 DC to run a 3-3-5 defense.  That's like hiring a monster truck driver to drive a Ferrari or a Formula One car; it's a different skill set for a different vehicle. I've said before that, had Rich Rod simply taken this step, his tenure at Michigan may have looked quite different (Granted, in lieu of the mess he left behind at Arizona, I'm glad he's gone, but the point stands from an on-the-field perspective).

As far as our players conditioning: it doesn't matter how well-conditioned you are if your scheme doesn't fit your players and they lose their assignments (Rich Rod), or if your offense gets too many three and outs (Hoke).  A defense that's on the field for too long, even an elite-conditioned one, will still be huffing and puffing at the end of the game.  Conditioning can't make up for poor execution.

So lay off Barwis: he did what he was told to do, and in that aspect he did his job.

All of these guys have their own trainers in the summer anyways. It’s not like college where the kids work with the same guys year round. Barwis will essentially be there to help the young guys learn what it takes to keep your body in good playing condition and to make sure players lose as little strength as possible. Lots of guys do a big bulk in the offseason because they lose up to 10 pounds during the season for how often they play and burn calories. Some players will still work with barwis in the offseason. But I think Steve wants to prioritize teaching the young kids about taking care of your body during the fueling NHL season. This move is less about getting the current players in better shape

Fun fact: my buddy works down at LCA helping set stuff up for events, he said yzerman held a meeting with all the arena staff that he doesn’t want to be called Stevie or captain or whatever, just call him Steve. One guy didn’t get the memo and later that day said “what’s up Stevie” and yzerman just rolled his eyes and kept walking. This is just a heads up in case anyone on here ever gets to interact with him or be in earshot of him and wants to say something. I would get annoyed by that too.

I am reminded of every other S&C discussion where someone notes that there is a big hurrah when they arrive and then they are later blamed for losses when they are replaced.

I think the rage over the whole "Barwis" era was more people looking for things to be excited about because so many weren't excited about Rich Rod.

in 2008, we were looking for any reason to be hopeful
