From Adidas to Nike. Thoughts so far?

Submitted by MichiganMan14 on
I've been pining for this for 10 years and am thoroughly impressed with the Jordan Brand/Nike gear so far. What are your takes so far? Has the gear matched the hype?

Adidas absolutely destroyed the simplistic beauty of our uniforms. Nike returns to us a powerful, simple, classy, traditional, and explosive look. In short, adidas sucked with their blind melon, up creative and crappy shit. Nike brings an air of respect back to the Michigan look.

Football uniforms are basically the same as last year which is good. Hockey uniforms are less enthusing, which was to be expected but they kind of upped the disappointment with that bad faux-back that didn't look classic or even cohesive as a uniform. Fan apparel is okay. I don't think I see any more stuff I like on Mden than I did before. Those are where my priorities lie, so all things included it's been okay. I'm not enthralled by anything but most of it seems fine. Nike has always sucked at hockey stuff and still do though.

So far I really like what I've seen. There's enough of a difference in the apparel to get the fanbase excited and buy new gear. At the same time the classics remain close to exactly that. The cleats and soccer jerseys so far have been the two items I've been most impressed with, mainly because of how clean they look. That maize soccer jersey is a beaut.

One more thing that has stuck out, Nike is EXPENSIVE!

Can't wait for the new season, this excitement surrounding anything and everything Michigan is fantastic. Go Blue!

I never want to see highlighter yellow ever again on Michigan like Adidas did 7 out of 8 years epic fail. Nike makes better quality than Adidas if Michigan ever go's to a different apparel company not named Nike/Jordan Brand it better be Under Armour.

Personally, I'm ambivalent about the whole thing. We're allowing our brand to be used as a platform to give more visibility to a sports icon who otherwise has no affiliation with Michigan, which doesn't sit well with me.

Having said that, I know that I'm in the minority on this issue. Also, if it's true that this helps with recruiting, then I'm all for it.

Love the colors, love the look, love it all... except for the Jumpman. Sorry. Hated Jordan at UNC, hated Jordan with the bulls (huge Piston fan), hate Chicago sports in general.

Will try and find stuff with only the swoosh. Is what it is.

Still way better than Adidas.

I went into the Livonia store today and it was great to see so many fans! I joked with the cashier and told him that he must be bored with business being so slow

At the end of the day, they're just shirts and uniforms. They're not going to make the team any better or any worse, and I'm not going to start throwing away or burning all my old Michigan clothes just because we're with Nike now.

I'm happy everyone else is happy, and recruits like it so its all good, but I'm pretty meh about the whole thing. If Michigan just goes out and wins, the. I wouldn't care if our clothing/jerseys were provided by frickin' JCPenney.

It's a double edged sword for me. I HATED jordan and the Bulls back in the day. I now appreciate his greatness. But man, my chicago Bulls fan wolverines are loving every single bit of this and I envy them for it. I can however appreciate the brand he's building and I'm starting to separate Jordan from the jumpman brand. Sort of like if you despise a ceo but love the product.

I find it a little bit weird myself. Man did I root hard against Jordan in his NBA days -- that certainly got me far. But I've grown to respect his brand. I don't really buy it because of the outrageousness of the prices but I still think it's cool stuff. I think it is pretty big for the program and I, personally, enjoy seeing the Jumpman logo next to the M.

I bought a shirt.

I totally understand your point and I think for a segment of fans this will always be bothersome, but for the majority of people in the nation they connect the Jordan brand to Michael himself, superior/premium brand, and in style design. I could be wrong, but I think that the majority of people who were/are excited about jump man stuff are young people that don't think about what MJ did to the Pistons for so many years. They are only thinking about what is in style, what is cool, and the fact that Jordan brand represents a premium name in the Nike product line.

The uniforms, shoes, gloves, all of it is gorgeous, and recruits are going to love it. However, I've yet to see a proper Jordan UM sweatsuit. That's what I want is a big, baggy, comfortable sweatsuit that is still stylish to wear on game days. Actually, none of the apparel has really blown my skirt up.

I always liked the part mesh jerseys from the early 90s? that were somewhat see thru whereby you could see the pads a bit....I thought those were badass. Are the new ones gonna have any of that??? maybe the material innovations have made them obsolete, I don't know....but I loved them nonetheless....

Thoughts so far? Nike stuff reasonable price, Nike + Jumpman waaaay over priced. Ill go with just Nike gear for now until the "hype train" calms down a bit then ill get some jumpman gear as well

I've been impressed with the apparel and the design. I think they major difference for me now is that some of the clothing is unique to Michigan in its design. I would always get frustrated when I saw another team wearing the same looking shirt just in their team colors. I think that is what sets it apart for me at the moment.
I think the hype for the Nike stuff was seen in their prices. Adidas wasn't cheap, and I must admit I haven't compared too many items side by side, but Nike seems slightly more expensive from what I've purchased. I may be wrong and it may just be inflation, but there are some very costly items in the Nike line.
My last comment is that I think the move to Nike represents an interest in attracting young fans and perhaps recruits. I've seen this point mentioned on the board before, but I really think this will be at least a small selling point to young people. It's unique and its a big deal to many kids who love Nike and Jordan brand.

I was over the moon last year when nike was announced. I was slightly disappointed when I found out that jumpman would outfit football. I'm most disappointed with the number "2". Some people don't see the importance of the number and font. Beyond the fact that 2 was on the jerseys of our last two heisman winners, the number is THE most prominent feature of a football jersey.

I would've liked the maize stripe on the away sleeve to have been slightly larger to resemble the away jerseys worn through '96.

As far as the gear is concerned, I dig it. Nothing earth shattering, but it feels like things have returned to the way they should be.

The uniforms look nice, but, I cannot stand that they changed some of the numbers. The 2 is not too bad, but I do not like the new 5, and hate the new 4! Also, I've never liked the new "maize" color that started last year. I've been watching Michigan all of my life, and have never seen this color on any other Michigan uniform. I have an authentic helmet from about 15 years ago, and this new color looks nothing like what is on my helmet.

when I went into the MDen for the first time with Nike, I was overcome by how correct the maize was in the store. bought a Polo just because, and it fits and feels awesome
