Ace: Note Re: Yelling Band Member

Submitted by Ace on

I got word today that the young woman in the band whose screams were picked up on TBS's microphones during the game last night received some very inappropriate responses from some fans, including the threat of violence.

I wish it was needless to say, but it's one thing to joke, and quite another to take it to that level. I don't have much time during the tournament to check on the board/comments. If you see any comments like that around, please let one of the mods or staff members know—the moderation action thread is here—so we can take the appropriate action.

College sports are fun, and silly, and sometimes we joke around to get through a slog like last night. Please keep sports fun. Much more importantly, please don't threaten or make light of violence against women.

Also, after talking with people at the game last night, it's obvious the problem was a poorly placed microphone — our photographer on the baseline and several others at the game didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

Thankfully, the band member in question is apparently doing just fine. That doesn't excuse any comments that cross the line.

Obviously, threats of violence are inappropriate.  But, man, that was so annoying that it made my list of Annoying Sounds in TV Sports (from least to most)

1) Miss St. cowbells

2) South African vuvuzellas

3) Dick Vitale

....

999) That girl's screaming

Wtf is wrong with people. I don’t even want to see the comments but if they caused ace to post on the board about it, it must have been bad. Go away, dummies. No one likes you.

The fault lies 100% with the TBS production crew and director.  I mean, how can you not hear that annoying noise in your broadcast ALL GAME and do nothing about it?  It's a multi-million dollar production.  Figure it our and FIX IT TBS!

The band member was doing exactly what she should be doing; she was supporting the team she has been supporting all year.

No one from TBS was monitoring their own production quality?

Middle school students putting on a play know how to move a mic.  No excuse.

This year during the OSU game there were some OSU fans in our section, behind me, that if they had been broadcasting their constant whining to a national audience, I can't imagine what the internet reaction would have been.

"Much more importantly, please don't threaten or make light of violence againt women."

Eh ... Why is violence againt women any more, or less, important or abhorrent than violence against men?

Political correctness run amok.

I didn't even notice it. But what's wrong with making noise for your team? Honest question: Am I wrong to scream at maximum volume in Michigan Stadium pre-snap on defensive 3rd downs?(Rather than jingling keys, which is dumb and doesn't actually make any noise.)

I didn't notice it until my wife commented on it. A couple minutes later I didn't even notice it as my focus went back to the abysmal first quarter of the game. Apparently she heard it loud and clear the whole time, though. Until she fell asleep anyway.

I watched on TV at home but really didn't pay attention to the screaming.   Maybe more fans should make noise so we don't just hear the one...

I was in the athletic bands, and TV microphone placement is always, always an issue. I remember an NCAA tournament once where we were fielding phone calls for the entire first period of a hockey game trying to figure out how to move around the microphones so people on TV didn't hear only a single clarinet or something for the entire game. We always had to be on guard about what we said, because you never knew when the mic was hot. The director had to wear a headset and be in constant communication with the arena/TV people... The whole thing was a fiasco.

In other words, leave the girl alone. There are enough things to worry about.

I will cop to the fact that I did say something about twitter about punching her, which was obviously meant as a joke.  I also deleted said tweet about 20 seconds later when I realized how innapropriate it was.

About 30-40 years ago, some network executive convinced either CBS or NBC, I think, that it would be great to broadcast a game without announcers. Just the sounds of the game. I loved it. Apparently, the network didn't, as the stunt was never repeated. Though there was a basketball game broadcast last year where they replaced the cameraman with a guy jumping up and down and holding a cell phone at floor level. Didn't love that - lasted about two minutes. Most of the time, I watch sports muted. Except with my wife. But there was a similar basketball game last season where there was a woman just screaming non-stop the entire game. So now my wife usually mutes, too. I owe that woman my thanks. She probably can't respond, as I'm sure she did permanent damage to her throat. I'm unaware that a band member was screaming last night. I'm not surprised that TBS didn't think it needed to do anything about it, though. If Dick Vitale has maintained employment for decades as a broadcaster, there's nothing this woman could have done that would have fazed them in the slightest.
