2021 QB Total EPA - Cade ranks 26/130 in FBS

Cumulative expected points added (EPA) through the regular season.
Given Cade's relatively limited usage early in the year, I was surprised to see him so high (above Heisman contender Matt Corral, no less!). His turnover aversion certainly helps.
Also interesting to see that after this weekend Michigan will have played 3 of the bottom 10 QBs in FBS according to this metric.
Beat Iowa!

Cade is 16th in QBR which is a better metric because it's opponent adjusted and this EPA is not (hence Corral being lower than you'd expect and G5 guys making up half the top 10 while QBs on winning Big Ten teams are in the bottom ten).
26th is underrating him. Cade has been very good this year.

I agree he's been very good, and you're right that EPA is not opponent adjusted. But QBR is also an efficiency metric, not a value metric. I think it's interesting Cade's EPA on 349 plays kept pace with a QB like Corral (578 plays), especially given the spread in raw/un-adjusted QBR (Corral 19th, Cade 38th).

I’d argue that QBR, as a measure of efficiency, is the more appropriate yardstick. Cade operates well within the entire system of the offense. How much good did C.J.’s #1 EPA do him last Saturday. If we are a star-driven offense, it’s H2 that’s the star, not Cade.

So.... he's a pretty good quarterback with off the chart intangibles... and he protects the football.
#12 will probably lead a comeback win against Alabama, get drafted in the 6th round by some team like the patriots, win the superbowl, and marry a supermodel.
This story sounds familiar but I can't quite recall. Cade is a stone-cold winner.

Except he was 10 at Michigan
December 2nd, 2021 at 2:44 AM ^
... and Cade will wear 10 for the Patriots because the punter will be #12. I don't see the problem. Life is full of symmetry.

I think we could have all guessed which team might have the last spot for a Power 5 QB. Never would have guessed Clemson would have the 2nd worst Power 5 QB here. Just wow.

And one who got by far the biggest NIL deal going into the year (Dr. Pepper)! Talk about a whiff by that marketing department.

Yeah, D.J. Uiagalelei, woof. Stroud and Young make perfect sense at the top, but was really surprised how low (relatively speaking) Kenny Pickett and Matt Corral were, given their status as fringe Heisman candidates...

A 5 star comes in at 1st………..and 127th
edit: ^^^ beat me to it

And Spencer Petras is 122. Let's hope he lives up - I mean down - to his ranking.

We didn’t play Penix
December 2nd, 2021 at 5:03 AM ^
We also played 3 of the top 21 QBs.

and iowa's QB clocks in at # 121. if we show up like we did saturday, could be a very long day for that dude.

Hutch and O-JA-BO will be clocking ol' Spencer Petras.

here's my fancy stats analysis: Cade McNamara can sling the fucking bean.

Petras at 122 makes sense.

careful..... shit like this can get your points wiped out and a sound thrashing from the powers that be.
lol

I don't want to alarm anyone but Max Bortenschlager (YTMB) is still playing football and is starting at FIU.

As is Jake Bentley. Who started for South Carolina as a freshman in 2016!
He is at his 3rd school, and has registered passing stats in all 6 years.

But he comes in 1st in our hearts.

I always thought a 150 QB rating was really the bottom of what we should be shooting for to have a good season. For example Rudock was a 141 in 2015, Speight was a 139 in 2016, and Patterson was a 149 in 2018. By comparison Barrett averaged a 151 over his career, Haskins was a 174, and Fields was a 178. I've been fairly happy with McNamara, but we probably are going to need more going forward to continue to be competitive with teams like OSU.

You're talking about QBR but this post is about EPA (expected points added). Completely different scales and everything. For the season, Cade's QBR is 146.6.

I'm aware...just adding context to evaluating Cade's play this season. Plus I don't really understand EPA so I'm bringing in a stat I understand better :)

I'm surprised Penn State's Clifford is so low in this list. It was my impression he was a very good quarterback.
December 2nd, 2021 at 9:42 AM ^
I knew that Stroud was a good QB, but before The Game I thought he was a tad overrated, but I can see now that statistically he is really good. Only goes to prove how good of a job we did to limit their offense last week and keep them one dimensional.

Cincinnati QB is almost exactly in the middle - Desmond Ridder.

D.J. Uiagalelei...wow! It's official. There is a Fansville Curse. First Les Miles, now DJ. If you're not a paid actor, stay clear away from Fansville, USA.
