Offensive tackle recruiting continues to be an enigma.

He was just waiting for the start of a winning streak, who can blame him?

On a more serious note, Sam Webb went to visit him and even after that he sounded none too convinced that he'd be committing to Michigan so why are you acting like this is a surprise. Oh, because concern trolling is you bag? Carry on then.

Gonna have to agree to disagree then. You certainly seemed to feign surprise. I knew you weren't actually surprised... concern trolling and whatnot.

Actually, in following Sam's posts and his comments on radio regarding this, he never said that Benhart would visit for PSU. He did say that a visit would be telling as to Benhart's feeling as it related to distance, which was a major issue for his mom.

So while this news is disappointing it was always stated by those "in the know," including Sam, that NEB was in the driver's seat in this recruitment.

Michigan was looking to land one more OL prospect as far as i know - Benhart, Keegan or Ike.

Michigan still has a very good chance at landing one of them...the OL class is good right now - if they land one of those two remaining targets, i'd call it a very good group

as some posters have mentioned, the additional 3 hours was a big deal for his mom.. turning a 7 hour trip to a 10 hour trip...

MGOBLOG MODS AND EMPLOYEES:

The ads within posts need to fucking stop. I get that you need to make revunue, but having to scroll past a fucking advertisement in order to complete reading someone's thought is well outside the realm of normal ad placement in 2018. This is the only board that I have ever seen this shit in.

I know that you have acknowledged the problem and you've said you're working on it. But that was about 6 weeks ago. An update would be appreciated to let us know what progress has been made to prevent this absolutely maddening glitch from occurring in the near future.

This was a "get him back on campus and who knows" situation.

Might of been able to pull even or ahead if he'd gone to the PSU game which, should be a big recruiting game.

He probably has a clearer path to the field at Nebraska if not a starting guarantee. Plus I'm sure Frost sold him on being part of a group that would turn Nebraska around. Oh well.

Our main concern is paying Brown and Warrner more money. I’m dead serious you can double both there salaries today and no one would blink a eye.

I remember a Sam Webb interview where his parents where they were most impressed with Michigan winning at Wisconsin but described the drive from their home to Nebraska as 3 hours shorter than the drive to Michigan. I think that pretty much sealed it.

This is where "star gazing" get annoying.  Your only definition of "success" is getting 5*/4*?  While that really looks nice on the internet and paper. I am far more interested is who the coaches pick and bring in and the play on the field.

Look, there is usually 4-7 5* OT every recruiting year (2019 - 7; 2018 - 4; 2017 - 6 according to 247), very few teams are going to have "success" based upon your opinion.

I'll bank on Warinner's coaching and eye for talent since "star gazing" is such a small window to shoot for.

It would be interesting to breakdown the number of OL drafted over the past 10 years and how many of them are actually 5*.  Wisconsin alone busts the whole "OH GOD we didn't get a 5* or high 4*, everybody PANIC NOW!!!!!" meme that gets very tiring to read over and over again.

Don Brown and Ed Warinner are coaches, they are very good at what they do.  They will not get every kid they call upon, but I will trust them that they will select kids who have the potential / talent to succeed.

A quick look at our depth chart by class easily shows that for the first time since the Carr era, we are stacking the pipeline with kids.  This helps in the development and process of turning a HS talent into a college level O Lineman.

" I am far more interested is who the coaches pick and bring in and the play on the field. "

The coaches usually pick those 5* players. The coaches prioritize those 5* players. The coaches settle for those lower ranked players because they struck out on the 5* players.

If the coaches CHOOSE a 3* over a 5* - then I agree that I'm more interested in the coaches opinion than recruiting services... but in general, that is not what is happening.

"It would be interesting to breakdown the number of OL drafted over the past 10 years and how many of them are actually 5*. "

For all players, not just OL - 2014 recruiting class vs. 2018 draft:

5-star: 57.6% drafted
4-star: 23.6% drafted
3-star: 6.9% drafted
2-star: 1.1% drafted

2013 recruiting class vs. 2017 draft:

5-star: 65.7% drafted
4-star: 23% drafted
3-star: 5% drafted
2-star: 1.4% drafted
