2015 v 2014 Michigan Stats

Submitted by alum96 on

NCAA data points comparing 2015 UM thus far to final 2014.  (not advanced stats so they have some quirks due to SOS etc but its apples to apples)

Most of these are expected but I had not realized how awful special teams were last year until I compiled all the data into 1 small space like this.  They were positively Michigan Stateish last year.  Please Baxter stay a decade more. (Net punting may be surprisingly low but keep in mind Blake doesn't have a booming leg, he is a placement guy)

Some of these have tiny sample sizes in 2015 like red zone defense and kickoff returns (ave 1 return a game last 3 games haha)

# below is national ranking.

That's an incredibly encouraging thing.  Few things in football are more random than which team picks up a ball that's on the ground.  We have not had good luck there, yet are still an asskicking ball of knives.

Correct this is a huge part of it. We have 6 RZ opportunities that's the best in the FBS (1 team has 7 and a handful have 8, not adjusted for number of games played). We've allowed 5 scores on those 6 opportunities. Except for App St and Toledo at the top of the metric we've allowed fewer scores where the drive was in the Red Zone at one point than any team in the country (on a gross numbers basis).

It would be good to indicate in the original post that the numbers indicate rankings.  My first thought at seeing our 2014 team and 74 in the third-down conversion percentage category was, "Huhhh??"

Very nice summary, Alum96. Thanks for compiling this.

Based on these rankings, the average position leap on offensive metrics is 22 spots, 19 positions on defensive metrics and - here's the nice one - 29 positions on special teams metrics. To quote the principal at the end of "Summer School" - "That's teaching."

Very nice improvements overall.
