2015 QB Recruiting

Submitted by Bluestreak on

I was looking through our 2015 offer and I only see one QB offered thus far (who has limited interest in Michigan).

While I know it is too early in the game for 2015 recruiting to get going, recent trends in recruiting suggests that players are being offered early and commit early. This is particularly true with a position like QB.

I'm not sure why Jayru Campbell wasn't offered and what the plan on QB recruiting is going into 2015 (two year separation from Morris - we absolutely need a stud at QB). From the looks of it most top rated prospects in 2015 are from CA (so getting them to commit will be hard as is).

Is there any mitigation for my irrational FOMO (fear of missing out) on a stud QB in 2015?

Oregon also recruited a certain head case Heisman Trophy winner that transferred before he set foot in Eugene. Look I am not saying it is easy as heck, but you can see some guys put up video game #s in HS in both run and pass.  I get there is a system in Oregon but skills are skills.  Devin looked pretty bad actually his first 2 years here and was not a polished passer - he developed.  Some thought he was a bust when we saw his few flashes as a sophomore - his passing was WAY behind what Manziel or Mariota did as underclassmen.  Manziel is not a "system QB"... you dont think Mariota would succeed in Michigan's current system? He can make (most) of the throws.   Michigan should be in the picture for a top 10 QB every year.  So yes they can go get a 4 star dual threat over a 5 star pro style if they choose that philosophy.  And they can go compete with the best of them in the nation to go get them.  Other than Oregon and Ohio State which team is Michigan competing with for that sort of QB?  USC? Texas? Alabama? LSU? Penn St? Georgia? No no no no no and no.  They can go get a top 3-5 best dual threat in the country any year they choose if they decide this is their philosophy - they are basically competing with 3 programs to go get those type of guys at the elite level.

...it's just one player and "This is Michigan." It's shouldn't be hard to land one top 15 QB at Michigan each year unless you start a true freshman and it's the very next class.

I'm not sold on Speight over Cornwell, so I'm taking the "wait and see" approach. That said, Speight is still at top QB so there is no reason to worry.

I'm more interested to see if we can bring in high level talent on defense. Saban has always said "you coach offense, you recruit defense." Guys like Tim Settle are what I'm looking for...a dynamic DE. A big time LB. Those (IMO) are a lot harder to get.

I think we'd all love to recruit a Devin type Qb in most classes, but the trouble is, such true and equal dual threats aren't everywhere. And they are real hot commodities when they do arise, so there's going to be some stiff competition. We got DG b/c he was in our backyard. Hopefully what he does in our offense makes us a contender for players like him, but I don't know who is a similar prospect this class. They might prefer to play in more of a true spread anyways. Coaches have to select someone they're comfortable with.

But the point is that they are out there. Tahj Boyd, Teddy BridgeWater, Keith Price, Jameis Winston, and Marcus Mariotta are just a few examples of QB's who can Pass and escape pressure like Devin did Saturday. It's up to our fantastic coaching staff to go out there and find them because like it or not these are the QB's of the future.

...against one of the best teams in Southern California in a 55-54 OT win. He may need to work on mechanics a little but this kid can play and is doings so against real competition.

place than some people here are acknowledging:  Gardner, Manziel, Miller, Mariotta, Wilson, Kapernick, RGIII, Locker, Ponder, Luck, EJ Manuel, Winston, Gholston, Scheelhouse, Colter, etc, etc, etc.

Is that DG was bailing us out of failed protection all the live-long day. That's not going to happen with all his replacements going forward. I hope these protection issues go away over time because our next line of qbs will be in for a beating. Those play action boot/rollouts worked very well at certain points, which is surprising, since long developing plays seem like a really bad idea against a defense like that.

This is part of my point earlier.  A Henne type QB would have been sacked 6+ times against ND.  Not LSU or Bama.... ND. Yes our OL will improve in the future but if you are thinking national championships rather than "Win the Big 10" you are going to face an elite defense most years in the championship game.  One that is going to penetrate your OL relatively often. So having a guy back there who can create is a bonus.  Everyone thinks RG3, Devin, Vince Young, Pryor.  I am not speaking to that level - those are hard to find.  Troy Smith or Russell Willson types?  Very good players but not 1 on 1000.
