Robert Zavala, a long time Michigan Usher, passed away.

I learned that Robert Zavala passed away from Covid-19 today. I did not know him very well, but he was someone I appreciate deeply.

I want to share a little story about our relationship at Crisler where he worked as an usher.

In order to place a remote camera, you need to arrive early at games. With his huge smile, Robert was always by the band tunnel ready to shake the hand of everyone coming down (If you ever gave him a fist bump or shook his hand, you remember how massive and firm they were).

Despite being in a rush to place my camera, we always took time to talk about the upcoming game. Before going on, I would ask him if I should place the camera to cover the offense in the first period or the second period (The camera is placed until the end of the game so you have to gamble on where the best action will happen).

No matter my feelings, I trusted his gut. He was rather amused by my routine because no matter the opponent, he never chose the first period.

It started when Michigan beat Norfolk State in 2018. With a remote camera, getting one good photo is great… That night I got two of my all time favorites.

At the end of the games, on my way out, Robert would look over my shoulder to get a peek at my screen. He would call me buddy and tell me to take care until the next game, smiling even if Michigan lost.

He will be missed.

A photo of him (Found on Facebook shared by
his friend Patty DeLorge Lewandowski)

Thanks for posting, this one strikes home.  I didn’t know him until you posted his picture, I had enough interactions with him to recognize the face.  He was always upbeat, very helpful and on one occasion gave my kid some swag.

Anyone who doesn’t wear masks around others, just recognize that this is the possible ramification.  Please respect those around you.
