MGoLiquor: What's in your bar?

Submitted by UMProud on November 1st, 2019 at 10:10 AM

Booze...Spirits...Elixir...Alcohol...Firewater...Poison...known by many names liquor, when enjoyed in moderation, is a wonderful treat now and then.  The Michigan fanbase are robust consumers of these adult beverages and I felt that we needed a diary to compare some of our favorites.

Here is a list of what this fan keeps in his bar and some thoughts on each...I don't claim to have a sophisticated palate these are just my impressions of the various drinks I enjoy....hope to see what other people imbibe in as well.

Favorite sipping whiskey - Crown Royal Rye Whiskey...excellent neat or on ice this is my go to drink when I'm not in the mood for something specific.  A slight bite but goes down smooth with a very pleasant aftertaste.  Not a fan of the variants like green apple, peach, etc.  The only exception is Crown Royal Reserve which has all the taste of the original but is smooth as water with absolutely no bite...pricey though.

Single malt Scotch - Glenlivet or Glenfiddich 12 year..Developed a taste for scotch once I hit middle age and found the single malts more to my liking than the blended stuff.  The 12 year bottles are a good taste to price point (for me).  My preference with Scotch is neat and the aftertaste of either of these brands is spectacular with floral and oaken hints.  When sipping scotch leave it on your tongue for a few moments to really activate the complex flavors.

Bourbon - Knob Creek or Woodford Reserve ... my two personal favorites which are excellent for straight sipping or for your Derby Mint Julep.  Lots of great newer bourbons out there I just happen to like these two old standbys.

Vodka - Grey Goose..Vodka can be made from a number of different ingredients such as potatoes, rice, grapes, etc.  Grey Goose is a product of France made from wheat.  Good vodka tastes good due to the distillation process (extra filtration) and what it's made from.  The cheaper stuff you want to use for screwdrivers or other drinks as it's seen less filtration typically.  Grey Goose is a wonderful vodka really suited for sipping straight and, even better, chilled and is quite smooth.  Vodka is also one of the top, if not the top, consumed spirits in the U.S.

Gin - I don't drink gin absolutely hate the stuff but keep a bottle of Tanquery for company.

Rum - Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum...don't drink often but when I do it's the Captain.  Nice slight peppery aftertaste, a little bite but pleasant on ice.  Run of the mill brand there is much better stuff out there but Captain's is fine for my bar.

Tequila - Tried Tequila a few times but never really developed a taste for it.  I keep a bottle of 1800 around for margaritas.

Miscellaneous

Cognac - Hennessey...don't drink it often but when I do it's a silky smooth great tasting liquor and goes down very easy.

Drambuie - An after dinner liqueur composed of Scotch whiskey, honey and other things I can't recall.  A little goes a long way but it is very tasty around the holidays.

Grand Marnier - an orangy taste after dinner liqueur my wife & her friends enjoy.

Ouzo - national drink of Greece and tastes like liquid black licorice and part of the Mediterranean anise flavored drinks common there.  Ouzo is definitely not top shelf but I like it once in a while neat and room temperature.

Brandy - St Remy ... I enjoy this usually during winter snows for some reason.  Smooth and delicious it leaves a pleasant aftertaste..St Remy isn't top shelf but it's a good value for the price and usually always available at Costco.

Jack Daniels - keep a bottle of this around for my young in-laws who usually always mix.  I almost wept watching my nephew wasting some of my Knob Creek with a coke.

Baileys - great on ice and like it in coffee once in a while...as this is a heavy cream drink it can contribute to acid reflux

Kahlua - nice chocolate-ish liqueur to sip (chilled for me) or for those yummy white russians

Economy Booze

Been experimenting with Costco's private labeled liquor (Kirkland) and what I've tried has been VERY good.  Some of their booze I'm positive is bottled by major labels.  Price is usually half to a third of what the better equivalent liquors are going for.

I've had the Vodka, Spiced Rum and Rye Whiskey...all taste good and are great values although I find Captain Morgan's to be sort of better than the Kirkland equivalent.

Nice looking bar, if that is yours.

Gin: My favorite liquor: Tanqueray Rampur for a hot summer day, Knickerbocker and Bombay Sapphire for the normal day and hot drinks, Hendrick's for when I just want a great tasting martini or want just a small amount of tonic

Tequila: Milagro Silver for Bloody Maria's (hate vodka) and 1800 Anejo for when I am in the mood to drink it straight

Rye: Not a big drinker of it but I was provided a bottle of Old Overholt and have had a few drinks from it.  I only drink rye when other rye drinkers ask for it.

Brandy: Just for coffee in the winter - Torres 15.  My father-in-law introduced it to me and I drink it in his memory.  I had Copper & Kings Butchertown at my brother's and it was fantastic.  I've not seen it on the shelf in West Michigan.

I have Hennessy in my cabinet but have never opened it.  Bought it once to see if I'd like it.  Haven't tried it yet.

No other liquor for me. Love the comments.  Great topic, OP.

Not my bar wish it was...I keep most of my bottles in a cabinet.  We have company and people head right to the $$$ stuff.  My brother in law spent the night once and drink damn near an entire $50 bottle of bourbon learned my lesson.

I swear I'm going to have to try a vodka martini I've never had one...can't do gin the juniper flavor is no mas for me.

Open that Hennessy to celebrate Michigan's victory this weekend and thank me later!

Scotch: Balvenie Doublewood

Bourbon: Buffalo Trace

Vodka: usually Tito's, 'cause it's only getting mixed.

Gin: nope.

Tequila: usually an inexpensive Silver or Añejo for making margaritas.

I used to drink Glenlivet 12 year old scotch and really liked it.  Then someone gave me a bottle of the 15 year old version.   Mmmmmmmm.  Now, I drink the 15 year old version.

Though I'm young (27), I'm a hardcore scotch enthusiast. I've got about 40 bottles right now, 10 open, ranging from a Laphroaig 10 all the way up to a Bunnahabhain 28 year old Cask Strength I found in a dingy place in Mississippi. I tend to love my Islay scotch, but I have a pretty good palate so I enjoy about every single malt I've ever had. I have a few bourbons, including the mythical Pappy 15(Should've sold it, Wild Turkey rare breed is better), but I seldom find myself reaching for bourbon over scotch.

I've also got quite a lot of craft beers, though I'm no longer actively collecting and purchasing those and sticking to whisk(e)y instead.

Also got a lot of good Traverse City wines, though those are primarily for the girlfriend.

Great topic of conversation, I absolutely adore everything Scotch Whisky so any chance I get to gush about it I will gleefully take haha

i only drink on special occasions at this point, but developed a taste for some fine spirits in my day; these are just recommendations as i don't actually have all this shit.

scotch: my favorite is the balvenie double-wood, peaty enough to satisfy my taste for dirt but aged in sherry casks. similar to a macallan 15 but much heartier, a beautiful blend of the smoke and the sweet. other ones i've enjoyed are the highland park 12, glenmorangie 10 (or 18 if you're rich), and a good ole lagavulin. fwiw i recently got my wife a crazy expensive bottle of laphroig "triple wood" that honestly disappoints but is what it is.

gin: definitely like hendricks, but i found that leopold bros (shed a tear: formerly of ann arbor, now in colorado) makes a killer gin as well.

bourbon: i second that woodford reserve is always the ticket. old grandad takes me back to my east quad days.

wine: spanish wine is great and often affordable; garnacha and tempranillo are milder and shiraz can vary. they make outstanding blends. if you can find it anywhere, atteca old vines 2006-11 are so great.

if anyone is interested in tea recommendations, i have those too.

Favorite scotch is Glenfiddich 18- very smooth, classic scotch.  In regards to 12 year old scotches, I surprisingly preferred MacAllan to Glenfiddich in a head to head taste test.

Bourbon: I like EagleRare both on the rocks or mixed. I found out about it here in an Mgoblog thread  Baker’s is also good

Gin:  Citadelle from France is my favorite. Whyte Lady from Montgomery Distillery in Missoula, Montana is a good, craft gin.

Liquor:  I like B&B. It is a little sweeter and smoother than brandy alone or cognac.

Tequila:  Don Julio 70 is very smooth. Hornitos Black Barrel is a good, non-expensive “premium” I discovered in a fishing lodge in Mexico.

Orange liqueur:  I think Patron Citronage is better than both Grand Marnier or Cointreau. It is a better mixer for “top shelf” margaritas as well

Rum:  Botran 18 is very good, almost whiskey-like. For mixing, I like Appleton.

Irish whiskey:  Middleton Rare is great. Otherwise, Tullamore Dew is a good basic one (Tullamore Dew 12 is even better and relatively reasonably priced).

For all you highland scotch fans, try to find a clynelish 14 yo.  Should be in the mid $50s.  Great price for this whisky.  No peat. Classic waxy feel.

dalwhinnie 15 is a great example of a sweet highland whisky.  Gentle, no peat.   Usually a good deal for a 15 yo.  Don’t spend too much, maybe 50-60$.  Great place to start.  Additionally people enjoy Deanston for this as well.

For those of you who like peat, try a benromach or ledaig-from the isle of mull.

Another personal favorite is a non peated islay, bunnahabhain 12 yo. Excellent excellent whisky.  Sherried.  $50-60.

If you aren’t sure about blends, try compass box spice tree.   Should be in the $50s as well.

if you are looking for better prices and your state allows shipping alcohol, try to buy online.  Also know that the new tariffs on single malt scotch whisky are taking effect and will increase prices shortly.

"A Bloody Scotch is what you drink when you want a Bloody Mary but don't have any vodka. It's just like a regular Bloody Mary, but with Scotch instead of vodka. And without tomato juice. Or Worcestershire sauce. Or a celery stick. Or a glass." (P. J. O'Rourke)

You're missing out on tequila.   Jose Cuervo tres generations and Heradura Ultra are some fine sipping drinks.  I'd also recommend a Calvados to add depth to the brandy selection.

I go for the Islay scotch, but I keep the some Highland variety for the guests.  My all time go to is MacCallen Ruby, until I find another bottle it doesn't come out often.

I prefer beer and my access to liquor is limited by the ABC stores here in VA. We've got the basics - Four Roses, Maker's Mark, Espelon, Tangueray, Tito's. I'm in business school and we live in an apartment, so I imagine once we're in a bigger place that collection might grow. Although, moving into a house would allow me to home brew again...

Nice- I’m more of a bourbon drinker when it comes to Michigan game time medication- these last few weeks I’ve been enjoying Early Times Bottled in Bond- really good for the price. For the Penn State game I was going through a bottle of Eagle Rare. Trying several different brands. Will probably go expensive top shelf when it comes to Ohio game.

Let's see what I've got here. I think a bar's probably supposed to be well-rounded but this collection is not, it's basically only what I and a couple of friends like to drink. So no tequila.

Gin: Hendrick's, Citadelle, Bombay Sapphire. This is more my friends' area of expertise but I give a thumbs up to the Hendrick's.

Scotch: Springbank CV, Springbank 15, Longrow, Laphroaig 10, Oban Distiller's Edition, Glenmorangie 12 madeira, Cragganmore 12, Ben Nevis 10. I think I'm not supposed to say this because apparently my Scottish ancestors had a feud with the Campbells, but the Springbanks and Longrow are strongly recommended; the only one of these that might disappoint is the Ben Nevis, though at least it's unique (has an odd chocolatey flavor to it). There's usually an Oban 14 here too but it looks like I must have finished it.

Irish: Bushmill's

Rye: Rip Van Winkle Old Tyme 12. There's maybe an ounce left in the bottle and I can't bring myself to finish it. I bought this at least 20 years ago and I don't recall it being all that expensive, but I just looked up current pricing and WTF!

Bourbon: Dickel, Evan Williams. Don't ask. And, yes, I know the Dickel isn't actually bourbon.

Vodka: Krolewska, Hungaria. The latter is truly awful; even I can tell, and I don't drink vodka. Maybe the filtering trick would work on this but as it is it's distilled hangover. As with the bourbon, all the good stuff has been consumed and what's now on the shelf is what nobody seems to want.

Herbals: Chartreuse, Henri Bardouin pastis, Rigas Balsam, Farigoule, Carlsbad Becherovka, Unicum. The latter's properly named; try it. I really like the chartreuse and Farigoule (it's a thyme liqueur), too. There's also a bottle of Sambuca Latinae that I guess must go in this category.

Fruit brandies: Etter Williams pear, Etter Zuger kirsch, Purkhart Williams pear, Daron calvados. The Purkhart is damn good.

Cognac: Lhereaud VS, Izambard.

Thanks to the OP for suggesting the inventory--there were a couple of bottles we forgot we had.

Not real picky about spirits as I drink more beer, also don't keep much of a bar stocked as the kids are of the age that they will steal anything not nailed down, and not appreciate the better stuff.

That said:

Being in the southwest Tequila is mandatory the Patron dark is worth it but need to compliment it with a decent Triple Sec  like Cointreau

The one thing I am picky about is Gin as the cheap stuff bears too close a resemblance  to turpentine.  I go for Boodles or Plymouth Sailor

I like the Canadian Whiskeys for mixing the standby of course is 7 Crown

I'm a Southern boy so gotta have Sour Mash  and call it cliché and gauche, but give me my Gentleman Jack

Scotch, yeah I know you are supposed to grow up and like, but I still have a mental block from my cousin's wedding where we killed too many bottles of scotch, and I just can't even take the smell

Rum, Meyer's is good enough, although I had Gosling's Old Family at a dinner party, and is was great... until I went to buy a bottle and it was over $70

Favorite sipping whiskey - If you haven't had Mammoth Whiskey or Rye from up in Bellaire, MI, you without a doubt should. Utterly fantastic and because I have carry it with me back to California, I don't break it out for just anyone. For regular use, either Bulleit or High West Whisky/Rye, got hooked on these on a ski trip in Park City (eat dinner at the distillery restaurant there, quite good) and nothing has ever made me go off them. Reasonably priced at Costco for the large bottles. Love them in a small glass with just the one huge ice cube.

Single malt Scotch - Glenlivet I keep it around for friends that like it, not my thing.

Bourbon - Again would start with Mammoth here, but then again follow it up with with Bulleit or High West for regular use.

Vodka - as others have mentioned, it doesn't matter too much as long as it isn't like crappy Wolfschmidt in a plastic liter bottle. I typically get the Costco/Kirkland bottle or Stoly and mix it.

Gin - Bombay Sapphire I use to make Dishoom gimlets on occasion, don't drink it by itself, so no reason to spend huge $. Hendrick's is pretty good if you like their cucumber/rose thing. I do, but not enough to buy it often.

Rum - got spoiled on real rum (Havana Club) in Cuba, so I only drink it when I can get that, which is a lot easier, as of late. I have some connection through quasi-family in Havana, so if I go to Miami and see them (half have moved there) they will sometimes have a bottle or two waiting for me to take home.....all this becuase i bought them a huge container of cooking oil when i was in Havana.

Tequila - I like Tres Generaciones a lot, but with the explosion in good tequilas, I haven't had a chance to taste around and pick a favorite yet. On my list this winter.

Miscellaneous

Baileys - also love it with one cube of ice

Kahlua - like it, don't usually have much need for it though

Amarula - got hooked on this in South Africa, cream liqueur made from the Marula fruit. Seriously good for after dinner, much the same way you would drink Bailey's.
