MGoCocktail: Connecticut 2022

Is Russell Crowe in this hacky trope Michigan or JJ McCarthy? That’s for the reader to decide.

There’s little to discuss in the QB battle, so I’ll just chastise the “fans” booing McNamara when he came into the game and for every play that wasn’t a rousing success.  He was getting booed for getting a helmet in his chest as soon as he got into the pocket.  It says something about something, that some people devolve every preference into a zero sum, no holds barred antagonistic fight.   For those who paid good money, sat through a delay to watch their team destroy a team by 46 and boo a player who was an integral part of the team that won the Big Ten Tile and beat OSU is the definition of hypocritical insanity.  If you are big enough a fan of the team where you decide to put your money and time, you want both QB’s to be good.

If one’s memory is short enough, we just need to look to last week in the Texas- Alabama game.  Texas probably wins that game with a healthy Ewers, and the hit that took him out was a touch late and a touch malicious but well within the rules (it gets flagged in the NFL).  McCarthy will be a target if he continues making throws like he did Saturday

When McNamara enters the game in the 2nd half, let’s cheer him like he’s Albert Pujols returning to St. Louis.

This is mainly a Burns post this week. Yale's most famous alumni.

The Yale Cocktail

Born out of the rivalry with Harvard and their Harvard cocktail, these Ivey leaguers have a way with names.  The original was just gin and bitters.  The recipe has evolved since then with several different variations.  Over the years,  Crème Yvette, a violet flavored got involved, which made the cocktail blueish in color to match the colors of Yale, like the Crimson color of the Harvard cocktail.  Crème Yvette stopped being produced, so crème de violette was substituted.  It then becomes more of a variant of the Aviation cocktail.

Burns would fit in at MSU.  "Defeated with Dignity"

There are couple current variations on this cocktail.  I find this one the most interesting

Ingredients

2 oz gin

¾ oz crème de violette or crème Yvette.  Crème Yvette was supposedly named after Yvette Guibert, a French actress and cabaret singer.  She was a favorite of the artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

¼ oz maraschino liqueur.  Maraschino liqueur is colorless dry Italian liqueur.  Its made from Marasca cherries, including the pits.  Don’t really try to substitute.  Luxardo is the brand that’s easiest to find

¼ oz dry vermouth

Dash of orange bitters

Lemon twist for garnish

Place all the ingredients in a mixing glass add ice to half way.  Stir until ice cold.  Strain into a martini glass.  Garnish with a lemon twist.

Oh man, sorry to crowd your diary. I was working on mine when you posted this. This drink looks amazing!

(out of curiosity, were/are you a bartender or is this just a passion?)

Eh.. mediocre effort from me this week.  I missed my self imposed deadline.  No worries. I wouldn't have thought anything of it.  Not like we can tell

Always been an interest.  Bartended at a Irish restaurant and bar in Augres. And then Chili's .. Nothing I made at either was very interesting.

With the night game against Hawaii on Saturday, we thought a quick drink to help energize people before going into the Stadium might be beneficial.

So, the drink is.. espresso and Baileys.  A shot or two of espresso with a equal amount of Baileys, placed in a shaker with ice - shaken and poured into a glass.   It’s sort of like an espresso martini - but, softer.

The drink was a success on Saturday - though, we were challenged to have enough ice - that late in the day.

I typically enjoy these but think it misses the mark this week by going with a random school drink that just happens to be in the same state. Heublein was a major CT based distributor that invented pre-mixed cocktails, popularized vodka in the US, and created the Moscow Mule. I would have gone with something along those lines.

100% on the booing of Cade, any M fan that does that is an utter douchebag.

I wish I could be in the stands each Saturday (I live in CA), anybody doing that anywhere near me would definitely hear about it and not do it again.
