2016 Michigan Roster

Submitted by HarbaughToKolesar85 on

The purpose of this diary is to track the roster as it changes between now and the start of the 2016 Michigan Football campaign. This will be updated in regards to recruiting and transfers as time progresses. I will leave the recruiting projections to those who know that best around here including Ace, Magnus, Alum96, etc. The only thing that I have attempted to project on my own is the renewal of fifth year seniors to be. We all know Harbaugh's policy that fifth year's are not guaranteed, and, therefore, I have taken a few of the redshirt juniors off of the roster already. My guesses with the Fifth Year Seniors are based on whether or not they were contributors this year. Hence Drake Johnson is projected to return and Tom Strobel is set for a firm handshake as he would not have played except for injuries to both Bryan Mone and Ryan Glasgow. Finally, I am going to take Jourdan Lewis and Jake Butt at their word about their desire to return since they have both made those statements publicly.

Rules

1. There are 5 categories which the players were divided between. The categories are Returning Contributors, Contributors Lost, Other Returners, Commits, and Targets.

2. Only what can be confirmed as fact will change my projection of the roster.

3. While the coaches are bound to the 85 scholarship rule my projection is not. If there are more than 85 players changes will come but I will not update the roster until the change(s) are made public.

4. What constitutes a Contributor is my belief that the player either A) Played meaningful snaps in multiple games at some point in the season or B)Would have if not for a significant injury before the season began. Bryan Mone, I'm looking at you (sigh). Other Returners are all of the players on the roster who are not labeled as a Contributor.

5. I will not project grayshirts or attrition among the commits.

Conclusions:

  • Michigan's Secondary and Defensive Lines should both be huge areas of strength next year with almost the entire group of Contributors set to return. 13 of the 16 between the two positions if the fifth year players are renewed.
  • Linebacker is going to go with a lot of young players. Help us Ben Gedeon. You're our only hope!
  • Don't look now but Michigan should have 3 Fifth Year Senior O-Line members who are in, at least, their third year as starters and their second year with Drevno. Do I dare to think we are going to truly have a dominant O-Line again, finally? Insert the "I want to believe" meme here.
  • The new QB will be a very happy man since he will inherit 9 of the 10(!) current WR's and TE's on the roster this year. (We'll miss you A.J.!). And that is without any consideration for TWJ, or the recruits.
  • If the coaches can unearth a playmaker at RB Michigan could make life very easy on the new QB because of the above mentioned veteran talent among the pass catchers and OLine. Could we develop an offense that deserved to be mentioned with the 2000, 2003, 2004, and 2006 units?
  • The coaches want to add Defensive Lineman and LB's the most in recruiting-based on quantity still left on the board-which leads me to question how many of the current D-Lineman will get a fifth year.

E.g., take the Returning Contributers for WR. Does the fact you list Darboh before Chesson imply that Darboh contributes more than Chesson?

Great post by the way. FB, QB, and LB are definitely question-mark areas.

has a fifth year available if him and the coaches want it. Not sure that it will happen but, to my knowledge, he hasn't officially left yet and that's why he's still on the Returning Contributors list. My assumption as of now with the RS Juniors on this year's team is that those who've contributed will be back. Just for the sake of this post. Sorry that I didn't clarify that in my initial post. Something to correct for next time.

Edit: The post now reflects my policy above.

Doesnt this already exist on this site? Look at the top where it says "Useful Stuff" and select "Depth Chart by Class". This already gets updated regularly whenever someone commits or leaves program. It can be edited by any mgoblog user. Im not sure what this diary is adding.

Firstly, I've never noticed that, but thank you for pointing that out. Secondly, that post doesn't include who M is targeting on the recruiting trail, which is useful to get some idea of who the coaches are going after and what spots they believe they need to fill. Thirdly, I'm not sure how the iOS app is, but people using the android app only get access to the main page, diaries, and the board. And lastly, for someone looking to discuss a current snapshot of the upcoming roster, you'll have to skip past some comments that are a couple years old.

Got it..I was mostly just trying to oint out it was there as it was clear original poster was likely unaware. Clearly my message had more of a negative tone than my intention. Also, there is another section under Usefull Stuff that shows recruiting targets but again it relies on the board to update it..but I guess that is no different than this post.

It's very early to be concerned about this, but who the hell are our conrners going to be in 2017? Our entire secondary save maybe peppers, if he keeps his word, will be gone after next year.

For a second there when I was reading Sr. after players' names I had this thought: "Damn, I can't believe that all these college kids have children, and that they named them after themselves/"

but I did not throw the obligatory /s up there.  I never thought somebody would take me seriously. Oh I hope you are being sarcastic too. He only decommited like two weeks ago. The reason? Sam Webb said it was because somebody in his camp told him that he would not get a chance to play QB at UM they would only try him at fullback so he promptly decommited. That info was as wrong as the neg somebody gave me for trying to be funny. But when he did decommit the coaches didn't fire up the jet and fly out to his school to calm him down and tell him that he would get a chance to compete for QB. So I believe the coaches either don't care and or would rather use the spot on somebody who won't decommit at the first sign of adversity.

We need interior D-Linemen badly along with every linebacker that can sign his name.

Hey, big-time linebackers. You WILL have to start early here. Early playtiiiiimmmeeee.....

Only areas I am worried about: QB, FB, and one linebacker spot. We have an abundance of experience as RB, WR, TE, OL, DL, and in the secondary. Next year could be a special year for us if we get solid QB play.

playing at Iowa is just like playing in the olympics with East German judges during the cold war. I have never seen an obvious TD get called out of bounds EVER that should have cost those referees their jobs, I bet they got raises instead. The B1G can't help these teams enough when they play UM, just look at this past season where the referees suspend our LB's before the Staee game and overturn any hits to the head the UM QB has to endure. This one guy hit him so hard that his helmet went flying off while he was trying to slide. The PSU game the player left his feet to hit the QB under the chin. The referee watched him do it  right in front of him and called it but guess what it was over turned, go figure.

The guy announcing the game on TV who is a unbias sorce said it best when he said (I am paraphrasing here) if that wasn't a hit to the head than what is. I watched this season very carefully and still at the end of the year I have no idea why they call them or why they overturn them. Usually any changes to the rules I totally understand usually the first time I see it or maybe it takes a couple games but never go to the end of the year and still be more confused about a new rule than I was in the beginning.

This is a great post. Big holes to fill in 2017 on the offensive and defensive lines. No need to look that far into the future with a 2016 lineup stacked with depth and quality experience returning. More importantly, another offseason grind under their belt with Harbaugh and staff working for every ounce of potential. Just need a QB to take the reigns and several linebackers to step up. I look forward to watching all that talent and depth control the line of scrimmage and show why they are the most important units on the field. An extremely tough schedule seems fitting for a team that I beleive is primed for success entering year two under Harbaugh and staff.  Their ability to find a consistent rushing attack and quality linebacker play will determine the success next year. After seeing Rudock improve his play throughout the season, I think the right QB is on the roster and eventually will not be a cause for concern. Under the direction of Harbaugh and a high volume of competition at quarterback, the right guy will emerge.

Not sure why Drake Harris is under 'returning contributors.' He hasn't contributed much of anything yet. If it's based off of hype then I can understand that, as there's been no lack of that. But I would imagine the contributor tag would weed out those who have only contributed hype off the field and not much on it.

Kalis has all the physical tools and if it ever "clicks" for him he'll be a monster.  Whether it will happen is anyone's guess, but long-developing Olineman aren't exactly a rarity.  I don't think we're looking at an AA here, but the possibility of a midround draft pick wouldn't surprise.

It finally did click for Braden about 1/4 way throught the season and his improvement was excellent.  No reason to think he shouldn't continue to improve (although at a slower rate).

Dawson? An underclassman leapfrogging a couple reserves with more recruiting hype and  poaching PT in a decent Oline made entirely of returning starters?  No limits yet on that kid.

Still doesn't quite get it,  but the poor numbers that the running backs are getting in some games are the running backs fault too. I am tired of seeing them run into the ass of the Guard trying to find a hole up the middle. Their vision is really lacking. I was watching film of other backs and when they see there is nothing up the middle they bounce outside and get 3 to 5 yards or bust a big one if they get outside the contain but at least get back to the line of scrimmage instead of a two yard loss.
