Wednesday Recruitin' Seeks Another RB Comment Count

Remember, all-time updates can be found on the 2011 Michigan Football Recruiting Board. If you have any recruiting tips or questions, you can e-mail them to me at [email protected] or tweet @varsityblue. For game updates on Wolverine commits, check out the Friday Night Lights series.

Assume The Position(s): Offense

rawls.jpeg

MI RB Thomas Rawls was the subject of last week's Sam Webb recruiting column in The Detroit News. He was super-productive in his senior year:

Despite sitting out two games with a high ankle sprain Rawls rushed for 1,585 yards and 19 touchdowns. His year was highlighted by a 344-yard rushing effort against Saginaw Heritage in Week 4 and a 396-yard rushing effort against Bay City Central in Week 5.

Scout's Allen Trieu breaks down his game:

"He is one of the toughest runners I've seen. He's very compact -- a bowling ball kind of kid who can break tackles and has a good burst. While most people see him as just an inside battering ram, I think he proved to me over the summer and the course of this year that he has legit breakaway speed. He's also very underrated as a receiver out of the backfield."

As long as he can nail a qualifying score on his standardized tests, it's likely he'll land a Michigan offer - and soon ($, info in header). It sounds like the Wolverines are a heavy favorite to land him should that happen:

Even if new suitors do come calling, they clearly will have a steep hill to climb. "I'm going to wink my eye a couple of times about this, but let's just say I'm thinking about staying close to home (to play college football)," he said.

With Justice Hayes coming in as a slot receiver, the Wolverines still have a bit of room in the class for another true running back - the "big back" complement to slashing Dee Hart - and Rawls could be that guy.

Elsewhere in running backs, FL RB DeVondrick Nealy still favors Michigan ($, info in header). His skill set is more on the Hart/Hayes end of the spectrum, so I'd be surprised if Michigan's coaches accepted a commitment from him.

Also on offense, Michigan is looking for a tight end. NJ TE Jack Tabb has narrowed his list to 6 ($, info in header), and will take just a couple more visits before coming to a decision, hopefully by Christmas. If he doesn't commit to the Wolverines, recent offeree OH TE Darien Bryant might get increased heat.

The Wolverines are also seeking another offensive lineman, with IL OL Chris Bryant the most likely option. Bryant is on the verge of an offer from Ohio State ($, info in header), and will announce a commitment in early January. Can the  Buckeyes catch up to his current favorites?

Player Breakdowns

Rivals has started rolling out their Position Superlative rankings (they've done the offense, and have only done D-line thus far on the other side of the ball). Michigan commits and targets feature:

I'll recap once more if Michigan targets and/or commits are ranked in the defensive back 7.

Elsewhere in evaluations, Poole1Dan passed along a first-hand report on MI RB Commit Justice Hayes:

Hayes is not a Big Ten caliber running back, at least not from what I saw in the Milford game. But as a slot receiver, he's pretty good. He displayed excellent body control on the 21 yard TD catch and could be dangerous in a Steve Breaston way on bubble screens. He could motion into the backfield and be a poor mans Percy Harvin (something Michigan has yet to deploy with any of their slots in the RichRod era). With his agility and vision, he might be Michigan's answer at punt returner, which has been a disaster ever since Breaston graduated.

As always, take one-game scouting reports with a grain of salt, but as this seems to corroborate a lot of what we've heard about Justice so far, it's worth paying attention to.

Upcoming Visits

Josh Helmholdt talks about the visit weekends coming up over the next two weeks, including a group of five this weekend:

Michigan will kick off its December official visit period with five official visitors this weekend. Commitments like Cass Tech cornerback Delonte Hollowell, Plymouth defensive end Brennen Beyer and Fremont (Ohio) Ross cornerback Greg Brown will be joined by uncommitted prospects Wayne Lyons of Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) Dillard and Blake Countess of Owings Mills (Md.) Good Counsel.

Tom's weekly update touches on Lyons's visit. Helmholdt also mentions a host of prospects for the Big Chill:

Recruits who have already scheduled their official visits to coincide with the Big Chill include Chicago Simeon offensive lineman Chris Bryant; Cleveland Glenville teammates Cardale Jones and Shane Wynn; Holland West Ottawa linebacker Desmond Morgan; Winter Springs, Fla.; linebacker Ryan Petro, and West Branch Ogemaw Heights defensive end Anthony Zettel.

Tom will keep us updated on the latest as the weeks go on (including a January visit from top KY LB Lamar Dawson), so stay tuned.

Etc.

Josh Helmholdt says that OH CB Greg Brown and FL RB Dee Hart are the only currently-committed recruits planning to enroll early. Brown tells him:

"I'm just focusing on finishing my high school education next month and in those following couple weeks, I will be enrolling at Michigan to play ball for the Wolverines," Brown said. "I just can't wait to get in the Big House in front of those 110,000 fans and play some football."

As mentioned in yesterday's Friday Night Lights post, Hart will be formally invited to the US Army All-American Bowl tomorrow, so I'll have full coverage of the announcement next week.

There are several other prospects considering Michigan who are looking into early enrollment, including NC WR/LB Kris Frost and GA S Avery Walls, both participants in the Army All-American Game, who plan to announce their commitments at that time.

Tom's Weekly Update has a few pictures of TX LB Commit Kellen Jones alongside some former Michigan greats.

Happy Trails

We've been wondering is NC QB Marquise Williams would decommit from North Carolina, but if he does, it seems like Virginia Tech, not Michigan, will be his destination. He remains an unhappy-face on the recruiting board, but I won't remove him quite yet.

GA DE Ray Drew has narrowed to a final 6, not including Michigan.

OH LB Percy Johnson, an ex-pat from Michigan, has committed to Cincinnati.

2012

MD WR/S Deontay McManus has received a Michigan offer.

and I'm sure these answers can be found with some search effort, but I'll just ask here.

1) Are 'official' visits paid for by the school?

2) Is there a limit on the number of 'official' visits a school can have, or is the limit only on the recruit (seems like I remember reading on here that a recruit can only take so many official visits)

3) The answer to either of the above questions will probably help answer this one, but if the player is already committed (such as the three you mention in the post) what is the purpose of an 'official' visit.  I would assume they've already visited campus (maybe an unofficial visit) thus the reason for their committment.

Thanks in advance

1) yes

2) not for the school. Athlete can take 5.

3) More of a feel of on campus life. They stay in the dorms with a player as their host and get to attend sporting events. They get more personal attention and tours and such. It is just an all expenses paid trip to the college for committed players. A few free meals, take in a game and hang out with your future teammates.

Last year there was "Offense With Minor Rage" (excellent) and "Offense Without Minor Rage" (meh).

This year's offense sorely missed that fast, rangy, power back.  The offense would've been downright Oregonian if it had such a running back.

MiKe Cox's size and violent running style fits that mold perfectly.

Yes, I'm still wondering WTF the deal is with Cox.

Mike Cox - apparently coaches want him to run more north-south, supposedly he dances around too much?

Very early in the year Sam Webb of WTKA claimed that the other RB's said Cox was the most athletic of the bunch.   It's a mystery as to why he hasn't seen more of the field.

It sort of seems like he isn't completely comfortable with the playbook. This could explain the mental mistakes (i.e. Denard 2009) and sometimes looking lost. He is obviously a physical specimen who should be getting carries if he knows what to do with the ball. Maybe he just needs some shirtless pics OMG! on the board to boost his skillzz!!

I wish Brandon would just say RR is staying so we can continue to recruit. Maybe he has to placate those that dislike RR and make it look as though it is more difficult decision.

If DB made a show of support for RR after that debacle last Saturday it would only antagonize many fans who are already grumpy.

DB is laying low because he is a big-time RR supporter.  That's the truth.

After the WI game I know a prominent former player who met with DB to express his grievances about RR and the state of the program.  DB cut him off and jumped down his throat.  This former player is now convinced that DB is giving RR at least 1 more year.

I don't claim to have any insight into who we should recruit.  I leave that to the coaches and those more knowledgable than I.  But RR's distribution of recruits is frightening.  Including those already committed for next year, we have 8 scholarship running backs for one position.  Seven if you count Justice as a receiver.  We have 14 receivers for three positions.  Fifteen if you count Justice as a receiver.  Yet we have only 13 scholarships for five OL positions!  This seems insane!  There is no margin for error for injuries or players not developing as hoped.  I'd like to see no more receivers or running backs in this class unless they are a 5 star studs.

There are 3 OL in the class, and they're planning on adding one more. Thats a solid class for OL, especially when they are only losing one starter.

Having a lot of skill position players is important as well, because

1. RBs get injured often

2. This offense utilizes the skill position players in unique ways that most other offenses do not and

3. A few will inevitably make the switch to CB or Safety...granted we've seen some shuffling of the OL and DLs lately, but skill positions switching to defense seems a lot more common.

You can't look at  a class in isolation.  You have to look at what is already in there to see what you need in the future.  Neither you nor I can tell which recruits will develop and which will dissapoint.  Nor can we tell who will get hurt.  Having 13 OL on scholarship is scary.

And I don't want any more washed out WRs as Dbacks.  If we need Dbacks let's recruit Dbacks not try to plug a hole with a washed out WR.  How did Rogers perform this year.

In my opinion, RR has fallen in love with playmakers at the expense of the big uglies who make the offense go.  Do you think that our skill players could have had the year that they did if we had the OL of two years ago?  As things stand now, we need to bat 100% and avoid injuries or else we risk a serious deterioration based solely on numbers

Your complaint has no basis in reality. Were you unhappy with the line play this year? I don't see how you could be, they were the strength of the team, other than Denard.

Now they are graduating one starter, two backups that didn't play much, and they're going to be adding 4 freshman, how is that not enough linemen for you?

Not to mention that this whole parroting of the "Rich Rod only cares about skill players meme" is ridiculous. All college teams have lots of RBs and WRs, Michigan has a very standard distribution of scholarships.

running backs or something.

Would love to have Rawls in the 8-deep too, but damn, unless Michigan is going to run the wishbone or something, how in the hell do you get all these guys PT?

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Perpetually Injured Running Back God that since 2005 has received unsatisfactory offerings for the Wolverine backfield.

Stockpiling. Good thinking RichRod :)

Wow, I hadn't looked at Shane Wynn's Rivals profile before.  I knew he was small, but he's listed at 147lbs.  For you social science types, that's less than 150 pounds.  Wow.

But he has a more impressive offer list than any commit we currently have, save maybe Dee Hart, but maybe better than Dee.  He must be real fasty and shifty or something.

Thanks for the update and information, I very much appreciate it! Also, I am really high on Rawls, and would really like to see him in this class, though with Michigan Nation in "wait and see" mode I'd be a little bit surprised to see additional commitments between now and early January (unless there is information being passed along to and through the coaching staff that we are not aware of, which is of course entirely possible). Sitting here, typing and, as one who enjoys following recruiting, I'm realizing just how "on pins and needles" I feel right now and, in all likelihood, will feel for the next month-plus...

There's no need for another rb in this class and we have Stephen Hopkins as the big back. He looks like the 3rd or 2nd string back and is only a freshman. Hey! How about we spend that scholarship on a kicker.

He was named all area defensive player of the year.  His coach says

“He knows where everybody is supposed to be. He makes the calls on defense and just his presence out there makes other guys around him better as well,” Caserta said. “… When you gameplan against us, you have to put at least a couple guys on him, and it makes the guys around him better.”

Here's the link (I'd post it separately but can't get Live Writer to work)

Based on NCAA ruling on Newton, should I be calling Zettel's parents right now and offer them serious cash for his commitment? As long as the kid doesn't know, he will never be punished and all I have to do is to drop off the money in front of their doorstep in $100 bills and no one will be able to to "prove" that his parents were ever paid.

Shouldn't we be having a pledge drive on this site?

Yes, I am half joking (but only half), but I am pretty sure there are a bunch of schools already getting a head start.
