Tim Drevno To Be Michigan's Offensive Coordinator Comment Count

Here's some water-is-wet reporting: a couple of solid sources indicate that USC offensive line coach and running game coordinator Tim Drevno will be named Michigan's offensive coordinator in the near future.

This is also being reported by USC reporter Gerald Martinez; it is all over USC paysites; USC OL Zach Banner (remember him?) has tweeted out a farewell.

Drevno's history as an OL coach is unquestionably excellent, and he was Harbaugh's offensive coordinator at San Diego.

FWIW, Michigan was high on GA OL Chuma Edoga's list early in his recruitment; he's now a USC recruit.

The way this is trending the whole staff is going to be 51 or younger except for Mattison. And Mattison is crazy energy for his age.

Love that aspect and love it for the "coaching tree" aspect 7-10 years down the road. (or hopefully longer)

Do people really think Harbaugh is going to stand on sidelines and just clap? He will be heavily involved in game play calling for the offense. I love this hire; Drevno will turn our OL into the nastiest in the land and will help coordinate a dominant run game.

Offensive line is the #1 most important unit. A great QB can't offset a poor offensive line, but a great offensive line can make an average QB into a good QB. I am 100% in favor of getting an OL coach as an OC. Harbaugh can focus on coaching the QBs and working on the playbook.

Living in Alabama the last 9 years and begrudgingly seeing Saban's program firsthand, I totally agree. Bama's OL year in and year out has been top notch. Just look at all of their great RBs that have gone on to be mediocre in the NFL (ie the OL made them great). Getting the OL right is the most necessary foundation to a great, stable offense.

There was a 24/7 Harbaugh  channel? I just can't get enough. And even though I know he's gotten a ton of press, it's still not enough. I want more!

and said we need a running game. Harbaugh will develop the QBs and put in some of the plays on offense. Harbaugh is a very creative offensive coach! So, I'm not worried that we got a run dominated OC.

I mentioned this earlier today when Brian said in his predicition that he had too many offensive guys and not enough defensive guys.

Take out Roman and make Drevno and Wheatley your co-Offensive Coordinators and you can add another coach on defense.

Is there anything that says this scenario is out the window?

Brian?

You could take out one of the offensive guys by making two of them co-OC and removing Roman.

Put that spot on the defensive side or at special teams.

How happy should I be about this? He seems like a
Legit offensive line coach, which we desperately need. He is also Harbaugh approved. But sounds like he doesn't have a ton of OC experience. What's the hive minds feeling here? How much of a slam dunk is this hire?

Don't know if it's slam dunk, but it's a great hire, and EXACTLY what we need. He can build a dominant O-Line, which is where any offense has to start. A great QB can't offset a bad OL, nor can a great RB. But a great to elite O-Line, which is what Drevno can build, can make solid QB and RB play that much better.

Only time will tell, but I think it's a great hire. Plus, his NFL experience will be a plus with recruits. West Coast roots help too.

ALL IN on the Drevno hire.  Welcome to Michigan Football coach!

An o-line specialist with OC experience - love it.  Dominant o-lines are the first step to (re)building a football dynasty.

Dowdy as well...I think you're looking at a couple of Harbaugh type lineman. Neither may be AA, but both seems like guys who will get the job done and have those paint scrapes all over their helmet.

I'm not expect us to pull in 11 five star prospects either...I think if we got the guys mentioned we'd all be happy and headed into 2015 with a very solid class.

Because of the actions of Jed York, I'm an ex-49ers fan and new Michigan football fan. Our loss is your gain. York just made a hugely valuable contribution to the University without having to open his wallet. You should name a building after him

I love the idea of a 49ers style run game at michigan. They had some of the coolest run plays I've ever seen. It looks very complex but when it's all working it's very impressive. Hopefully hoke left him the right type of talent to forge that and they can pick it up.

All those years when we were routinely putting OL's into the NFL were years where we were winning.  Historically, Michigan's best RB's have never been that good in the NFL.  A good OL makes up for other deficiencies.
