Thursday Recruitin' Isn't Ace Comment Count

Brian

Ace is on vacation this week.

The Williams conundrum

I've mentioned this in a UV or two, but it warrants mention here due to Developments: Michigan is suddenly hot in the recruitment of VCU decommit Kenny Williams, a 2015 combo guard who is back on the market after Shaka Smart took the Texas job. Williams picked up a slew of Michigan Crystal Ball picks from insiders unconnected to M—usually a good sign if they're pros, as a few are—and then Beilein started tracking him in earnest.

Beilein is serious:

The Chesterfield, Virginia native confirmed to UMHoops.com that John Beilein plans to meet with the shooting guard now that he has been granted his release from the Rams.

“The plan is for him to come down this weekend,” Williams said in a text message to UM Hoops.

Other contenders include Georgetown, UNC, and Virginia. The kid is evidently very interested in Michigan, and Sam Webb reports that Beilein really likes him… and that Williams is not a contingency plan($). That stroke gets his attention.

Where does the scholarship come from? With wings and shooting guards cramming into the NBA draft and Caris LeVert slipping towards the tail end of the first round, it does not look like it'll be the NBA's doing. LeVert:

“I still have a ways before I can start running and jumping,” LeVert said. “Going out there tomorrow would probably be a stretch. … But I don’t have to do that. The combine isn’t tomorrow. I still have a couple more weeks to go. Hopefully in a couple weeks I’ll feel a little bit better.”

Additionally, LeVert admitted Wednesday night that if the second evaluation reveals he would likely be a second-round pick, he would most likely come back to school.

“I don’t think it really makes sense to go early and be drafted in the second round,” he said.

That is a nice change from Harris/Morris/Robinson, and if plugged in people feel that Caris is not a first-rounder after his injury and the pile of early entries the needle points to him staying on scholarship. So it seems likely at this point that if Williams does commit, Hatch will transition to a medical scholarship.

What about Jaylen Brown? If Williams wants to commit it looks like Michigan will check back with Brown just in case he wants to drop, and in the highly likely scenario he doesn't they'll take the bird in the hand.

Where does playing time come from? I can't answer that one. Even without Williams next year's roster is jam-packed.

On campus right now

Offered MI K/P Quinn Nordin is in Ann Arbor as you read this. Nordin may be the top kicker in the country. Though you hear that about every kicker Michigan recruits, Nordin has 20 offers—an absolute ton for a specialists. Nordin's announced that he plans on attending MSU's spring game on the 25th so a commit is probably not in the offing, but Brandon Peters was supposed to hold off on his Michigan commitment and that didn't happen.

Michigan could have an edge since Nordin is affiliated with Kornblue kicking, and Brandon Kornblue is a Michigan alum. Since Michigan's offer, a pile of predictions have come in for M, including Ace's.

Forks up

True story: when we were in college doing dumb college things one of them was voting with forks. One of the house rules was "one man, one fork" and people would express approval by exclaiming "forks up!"

This is again relevant to my life because occasionally I read articles about Arizona State recruiting pitches. This one was made to VA WR JJ Givens:

"I know for sure I'm going to Arizona State and Michigan this summer. The whole forks up mantra at Arizona State excites me, It's a program I grew up watching. With Michigan, I just love everything about them. They just got Harbaugh as their coach, they have NFL experience now. I look up to Jabrill Peppers and I work out with Derrick Green here a lot in Virginia."

Oh and Givens seems to really like the idea of Michigan. Michigan has offered, though these days they're emphatically on board the "offer everyone and let God sort 'em out" train, so it's hard to tell how high he is on their board.

I was there and it was nice

Eifler showing off his bowling score, the highest ever recorded

Scout has react from five-star CA LB Camilo Eifler, who has just returned from a tour of a number of East Coast schools($). Most interestingly for Michigan's 2015 team, Eifler describes Michigan's SAM spot as a return to the 4-3 under:

“I would most likely the WILL or MIKE position, just because their SAM is more like a two point end that rushes the passer mostly.”

So keep that in mind.

As far as Eifler's trip, it went well, getting the "blown away" headline designation. Eifler's chosen visits imply Michigan's academics are a real factor: other than M he took in Duke, Vandy, Northwestern, and Louisville. Those first three are the kind of visits you only take as a five-star if you are serious about the education thing. Eifler($):

“Most of the schools that I visited were academic schools.  That’s just what I want,” said Eifler.  “I want to a school to have football and academics.  Michigan showed me the academic side, but also with the power football behind it that some of the other schools just didn’t have.  It was good to see what it is like to be part of that.”

USC has not offered and he seems a bit miffed about that; Oregon doesn't seem like a huge factor right now… he seems very much in play. Washington has the only two predictions for him on the Crystal Ball.

Crawford still talking M

CA WR Dylan Crawford now seems like a longer shot since the "KJ Costello brings half of California with him" plan was derailed by accursed Stanford, but Michigan remains a school of major interest:

"I want to get to Oregon for sure," Crawford said. "I'm still waiting on that offer. I would also like to visit Michigan again, either unofficially or officially. Right now, I'm wide open and don't even have a top 10 yet but the plan is to narrow things down in the summer and then commit at the end of the summer."

Crawford was being interviewed about his recent trip to… yes, Stanford. And don't expect his commitment-type substance to be final:

"After I commit, I still want to take 3-4 official visits, just for the experience. I would love to visit Alabama and LSU, maybe Michigan like I said."

Falcon coach-scout

Matt Falcon's coach on Michigan's newest commitment($):

"First of all, he's as fast as anyone around," Conley said sternly. "On the track he's setting records in the indoor 200m races and when you see him out there and he's 50 or 60 pounds heavier than the these other kids that he's running against and he's beating or tying them it's just really impressive. He is definitely a great talent. …

"What I like about Matt is that he can do a lot of things," Conley said. "Whenever we'd have a hard time blocking for him we were able to throw the ball to him because he catches it so well. He's incredible at catching the ball out of the backfield. His skill set at catching the ball is one of the best I've ever seen. We plan on using him a lot and want to put a lot of pressure on defenses. He can be really dangerous at Michigan depending on how they develop up front."

That skill will be an asset at Michigan, as Harbaugh loves those five-wide sets with base personnel. That kind of flexibility will be attractive when it comes to playing time. (And is going to be really interesting when it comes to Ty Isaac this year.)

The distant future, the year 2000

I have a policy of studiously ignoring all sophomore-and-younger offers unless given a specific reason to pay attention. This from Cass Tech 2017 safety Jaylen Kelly-Powell counts:

"I grew up in a Michigan household," Kelly-Powell began. "My Dad is a diehard Michigan fan. He named me after his favorite Michigan basketball player, Jalen Rose. I love Michigan also."

He'll be a guy to keep an eye on. Current 180th in 247's insanely early rankings for that year.

Etc.: It's too bad IN ATH Toks Akinribade is probably a tailback according to his coach($), because TOKS AKINRIBADE. Michigan is likely full at RB.

I hate to beat a dead horse here, but I still don't understand the previous assertion that Hatch can't walk-on without counting against the scholarship limit.

I've found 2 examples of scholarship athletes walking on to make room for other players, and in one case, incoming freshmen.

Louisville has 3 scholarship players become walk-ons:

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2011/06/kuri…

Xavier's Matt Stainbrook walks on so his walk-on brother can have his scholarship:

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2015/03/meet_matt_stainbrook_uber_dr…

Why is Hatch unable to do as these other players have done?

Note: This is not an endorsement of this plan.  I don't feel that Hatch is obligated to give up a serious financial consideration for the team.  However, if remaining on the team is more important to him than whatever money would be spent to walk-on, this seems like it would be an avenue to consider.

Yes if he wants to pay $20K to have a shot at 5-10 mop up minutes during the season, then I'm sure he'd be able to do that. The more likely role would be for him to become a student manager where he can practice and travel with the team but is not technically on the team. I believe there have also been waivers allowing managers to suit up and play in games.
Not a slight on Austin but I think that would be a better outcome for the team

or more like $40K--which is, of course, like everyone else attending the school?  I doubt this is even a matter of affordability.  He could also be put back on scholarship the following year.  Similarly, Bielfeldt could do the same thing, if he wanted to.  He also has the family wherewithal and 4 paid scholarship years out of 5 isn't too bad a gig.

becoming a walkon is realistic. That would indicate that he thinks he can play well enough to contribute to the team. If that's the case, I expect Beilein would keep him on scholarship. If Austin doesn't think he'll recover to the point of playing high D-1 basketball, that's when he'll be offered the medical hardship. I'm certain they have already discussed this. I can't imagine Beilein recruiting for his spot otherwise.

Yes having Hatch walk on for one year seems like the best option if he's willing to pay for one year of school. He can return to the team next season and redshirt this year. Or you could find another player willing to walk on out of the other 12 players.

My assumption has been that it's Williams OR LeVert, not both. The Hatch thing doesn't need to be a concern until a low probability scenario becomes reality. Discussing it seems bordering on disrespectful, but apparently people want to do it.

I could be wrong though about the OR thing.  In the event that I am, the playing time for Williams will come at the expense of Spike (possible red-shirt or major minutes reduction), MAAR, Dawkins and Robinson, and probably extend down to the backup Forward minutes (Chatman, Wagner) too. It might bump our big 3 (Walton, LeVert, Irvin) down closer to 30 mpg as well.  In other words, it'll come from all over...

Or it may not come at all.  Williams could feasibly red-shirt if everyone else is back and then emerge as a starter beside Walton after Spike, Caris, and maybe Zak all depart following next year.

These things sort themselves out.  IMO it's not a problem worth worring about. 4 star recruits sit the bench as freshman all the time at other elite schools.  We've grown a bit used to instant impact freshman but that was when Michigan was on a steep slope of improvement from the end of the Amaker area.

If we get Levert OR Williams OR Brown, I'm going to be ecstatic.  If we get 2 of the 3 I'm going to... be extra ecstatic.

A medical hardship for Hatch would have to be done for the right reasons and in the right way - and I'm sure Coach Beilien would do that - but I don't see it as borderline disrespectful to wonder whether a person who suffered a severe head injury and other major traumas will be able to play basketball at a Division 1 level.  His chances of having great leaps in his improvement diminish as time goes on, and there could come a point where it's not realistic to pursue a basketball career anymore.  It would be wonderful for him to get back to being even close to the player he was, but acknowledging the strong possibility of that not being likely is nothing more or less than accepting a harsh reality.

Agreed. Hatch is not a D1 player. He's far from it, unfortunately. If Beilein thought he just needed more time to recover, he would have redshirted this season, not played some garbage time minutes. Since he did, I think that means he played when he had the chance and will be in some other capacity moving forward. If for some reason we have an open scholarship, they'll keep him.

Lanknows

April 16th, 2015 at 3:28 PM ^

So yeah, it is disrespectful to question if he can when he has, IMO.

I know what you mean of course, I just don't see any reason to engage in the conversation right now - speculating the Hatch would get bumped out - when that situation hasn't even arised yet, and likely never will.

Levert is still deciding about the NBA. Williams is still deciding on a college. Brown, ditto, with far lower odds.

Beilfeldt is still looking around and being considered for a return because there's a chance that Michigan has an EXTRA scholarship.  So why talk about pushing Hatch out?  If it happens, it will be understandable, for all the reasons you described, but I don't get why we need to discuss it in advance.  Just seems rude to me, that's all. At least wait until Caris says he's coming back and then this starts to come into play.

Not everyone who plays college ball is there to pursue a career in it. At the NCAA level most are not. As others have argued, the benefits of keeping him on the roster, on scholarship, etc are significant.  I don't know why a Michigan fan would engage in any coversation that undermines what the kid has accomplish. (In my opinion it does, at least, show a lack of gratitude and respect for him to speculate this way.)

Erik_in_Dayton

His physical and neurological problems are not moral failings.  They just are.  I don't think anyone holds it against him that he's not where he was.  It's not insulting to suggest that he might not be able to play a D1 level*, because there is nothing wrong with him not being able to play.  Hatch's recovery has already been remarkable.  The only question now is whether he can be something even more than remarkable.

*I trust you understand the difference between entering a game for 30 seconds to play against back-ups and being able to fully play Big Ten basketball.  I'm sure Hatch sees the difference.

IMO it is disrespectful to speculate that he will not be.

The issues around this reality are obvious to anyone and everyone. So the speculation is pointless. There is no scholarship crunch right now. There might be one in a few weeks or whenever Caris makes a decision. Why have the conversation now?

Rational minds may disagree on how appropriate it is. I don't see a single positive outcome of engaging in it before it is pertinant.  Especially because we don't actually know if LeVert's decision ends the Williams/Brown recruitments or not.

We are talking about an inspiring member of the basketball team.  I'm glad he's on the team. I have no inclination to want to talk about the alternative, even though I acknowledge that it is a possibility if a certain series of events come to pass.  That series of events is not the most likely series of events, so, again, why talk about it now?

Just my opinion.

Ditto from here wrt respect.

I love future roster conjecture, I just think some things are distasteful. Namely, pushing specific individuals on the current team off the roster because they aren't good enough.  For me, this applies to potential (unrenewed) 5th year scholarship players too.  I personally would rather just leave a general open slot (or slots) for attrition without 'naming names'.

Especially in football where you have a big pool of scholarship athletes to choose from. In bball it is trickier, but you still don't have to SAY it, even though most people are going to think of the same name(s) when the conversation comes up.  Even in a case that is probably pretty obvious (e.g., Russel Bellomy) my preference is to not say the name out of respect for the kid.  Besides, our assumptions are often wrong and the coaches see things differently.  So I'd rather say Michigan may have an open roster spot for Brown or Williams due to attrition.

The danger there is you can set off a storm of speculation (X is considering a transfer!) but in this case you can still say the obvious medical hardship candidate and everyone knows who you mean.

For all we know Beilein and Hatch had an agreement all along that he'd be on the team his freshman year, get to play in some games to fulfill his dream, and then go on medical hardship.  Hatch himself said in that short on espn about him that his brain simply cant process things fast enough to play high level basketball.  I don't think it'd be that much of a surprise for him to go on hardship and there's nobody i'd have faith in more to handle things the right way than Beilein.

grouping of Michigan, Northwestern, Duke, Vanderbilt and Louisville? It baffles me that petrino is able to get these kids so interested in his program, especially after what happened with the kid leading up to signing day. I'm glad UM was able to get Reese to flip his committment, and I can't imagine if they really want Fitzpatrick, that they won't be able to get him to flip. Hopefully, Eifler, if he doesn't go to UM, will at least stay away from petrino. The guy must be an incredible salesman if he can outrun his own sordid past.

If we can keep Caris and add Williams, you are looking at a roster with 7 guys who you'd expect to shoot at or above 40% from behind the line (LeVert did it the last two years, Irvin was at 42.5 as a freshman when he didn't have to carry the offense, Dawkins was at 43.8 last year, Spike is at 40.3 for his career, Walton hit 41 when healthy as a freshman, Robinson shot 45.6 at Williams, and Williams looks like a very good outside shooter).

With that kind of pressure on teams guarding the perimeter this team could be absolutely lethal on offense.

Lanknows

April 16th, 2015 at 5:06 PM ^

I think we'll be a really good shooting team, but Michigan had two guys this year who shot over 40% and one of them played only 18 games and has a career 3% under 40.

If you were to set the over/under for number of guys shooting over 40% next year it'd probably be 3.5.  But you're right that Michigan has 7 guys at least who could do it.

I think the bigger benefit of what you are talking about is it's going to create a lot of spacing on the floor when Caris drives and you have to respect Spike, Walton, Robinson, Irvin, and Dawkins enough to not double him.  Nearly every team around is trying to have 4 shooters for spacing -- Michigan's roster has them.
