you'd be forgiven for thinking this was a game of greased pig [Patrick Barron]

That's not going to satisfy anybody.

In many ways, Michigan won comfortably over a bad Illinois team today, outgaining them 489 to 256 with a 17-point final margin. The Wolverines boasted a pair of 100-yard rushers, finally utilized Shea Patterson in the running game, took several shots downfield in the passing game, and tallied 12 TFLs on defense.

And yet.

For most of the first half it looked like a Michigan-Rutgers game. The Wolverines moved the ball at a ten-yard-per-play clip, almost cruelly pounding the Illini defense on the ground, while the defense forced six punts and a turnover on downs on the first seven Illinois possessions as they rotated through ineffective quarterbacks. A Zach Charbonnet fumble to kill a drive and a Matt Robinson touchdown pass to Josh Imatorbhebhe shortly before halftime seemed like minor blips. Michigan led 28-7 at the break. All (okay, most) went according to plan.

Zach Charbonnet had 116 yards but also lost a fumble. [Barron]

Then the Michigan-Army game emerged from the tunnel. The offense punted on their first two drives of the half, then lost the third on a Tru Wilson fumble. That set up the Illini with a short field and they'd capitalize on a Dre Brown scoring plunge; he'd add a two-point conversion to stretch the scoring run to 25 unanswered points.

Patterson and friends averted disaster, as the embattled quarterback used his arm and his legs to account for most of the ensuing ten-play, 79-yard drive himself, capped with a diving touchdown catch by Donovan Peoples-Jones. The Illini fumbled on each of their next two drives, with the second—a comical pop-up caught out of midair by Carlo Kemp at the doorstep of the end zone—leading to a final Patterson touchdown run.

While this game wasn't going to solve the team's many season-long problems, it was reasonable to expect a relatively clean game against a struggling Illinois squad playing without their starting quarterback. Instead, it got passers-by-are-gawking bad for much of the second half as those familiar problems reappeared. Next week, Michigan plays in a much less forgiving environment: a night game at Penn State. Maybe this time they'll figure out how to hold onto the dang ball.

[Hit THE JUMP for the box score.]

But first, beard.

[Barron]

What a beard.

The only thing that bugged me was the Nordin miss and then Harbaugh not going for more with 55 seconds and three timeouts left. 31 or 35-0 would've been ballgame.

But you know what, I actually like this team. They've looked really good when Patterson has been willing to run (and not fumbling).

We might not win next week, but I think it'll be close either way.

It's pretty obvious that the team is emotionally connected to Shea's performance.  As soon as he starts having a garbage series or two, the entire team on both sides of the ball thinks, "here we go again"  and they all start to play like garbage.

At this point, my only wonder left for this season is if OSU beats us by 40, or much more.  I was thinking it would be 40 after the Army game, now it seems the sky's the limit.

It has to be something other than that - any QB can have a bad series. Also if someone fumbles or drops that isn't the QB.

They do seem to be thrown by adversity, but they also keep coming back, as does Shea.

OSU well I just don't want to think about today....

I don't know.  Seemed like the defense was pretty stout in the first half, but as soon as Shea came out with some garbage series at the beginning of the second, the defense fell apart and there was a flood of turnovers.

I think the team feels the same way the fans do about Shea, and frankly the way the coaches do.  Why do you think they went almost all runs for the first dozen or so plays.  They wanted some team confidence with no chance for the QB to F-up the start of the game.  The players and coaches have seen the same things the fans have game after game.  Plus, I imagine every one of these players are constantly getting texted by their friends, "yo man, your QB is garbage."

I have no doubt that if McCaffrey didn't get killed he would be the QB in this game.  Now, I question if he won't be permanently broken when he comes back after Shea.  I have a hard time putting this on coaches, they don't have a choice but to stick with Shea under the circumstances.

If people want to be happy with simply winning, fine, but this is a program steeped in delusion right now.  Offense has no identity and play calling makes no damn sense half the time.  Shea played well according to many, and yet all I saw was the same tendencies that will bury us next week and on.  The Gattis show has been a disaster that has seen across the board regression of the talent we have combined with a contradiction of everything he said this would be in the off season.  It's frustrating and I honestly don't know when it will get better.

It might never get better.

But your point about offensive identity is a weird one that it seems only we worry about. Had we had an offense that was coherent in your opinion and lost this game, that identity wouldn’t make you feel any better. Georgia has an offensive identity; I doubt that’s consoling them right now.

Winning ugly isn’t good. It’s often a sign that something is wrong. But it’s better than losing in any fashion.

Bo used to say something to the effect that any road win was a win no matter how ugly.  Still, this squad hardly inspires confidence and watching this was heart wrenching to any M fan who appreciates their talent and dedication.  Am trying to stay above the gutter and I hate to bring up this obtuse tangent but why the heck did JH not give Joe or Dylan (if he was cleared) some reps at the end of the game?  As we move into the meat of the season we’re one hit away from no qb.

I'm sorry to think this...but the Hackett Plan B option Dan Mullen, may have worked out better, than Plan A.

Michigan should have won this game 56-0 or probably 63-0.

Illinois is terrible at football.

The talent gap between these two programs today can best be described as Grand Canyon-esque.

Despite this immense chasm, and despite Illinois' incompetent coaching staff, and despite Illinois being on their 3rd string 1-star QB, at one point in the 4th quarter of this stupid game the score was Michigan 28, Illinois 25.  You got that right. The nation is laughing at Michigan football right now, and frankly, it is hilarious in its own way. The same Illini team that lost by 3 points to a now 3-3 Eastern Michigan was just 3 points behind Michigan in the 4th quarter.

So how is that possible?

Well, it's because Michigan's football team doesn't care.  They don't.  We're in game 6 of the season and UM's veteran OL and veteran receivers are half-assing their blocks. Michigan is continuing to fumble away the football, drop passes, commit drive-killing mental mistakes.

Michigan was 4 of 10 on third down (40%) today, and of course lost 2 fumbles which both led to Illini scores.

The Michigan defense this year is underrated because this stupid offense simply won't get its shit together after 7 weeks, refused to move the ball consistently, and insisting on playing "Yay!!! Happy Christmas Time!!" with the football.

We know that's not going to cut it against Notre Dame, Michigan State or Ohio State this fall. All of the players know this. The coaches have told them all about ball security, sustaining blocks, mental mistakes in practice and film sessions repeatedly every week.

But the ball security doesn't improve.  Assignments keep getting misssed. Because they don't seem to give a fuck.

Well, ok.  Then why should Michigan football fans give a fuck then?

We all know what's going to happen next.

Penn State is going to beat Michigan next weekend, and the UM players are going to act all sad in front of the mic after the game like "gee, how'd that happen?"

Mason has killed 2 red zone drives and killed our momentum from bonehead plays, he doesn't fit this offense.

Why did Dax hardly play on d today? They need his speed.

I'll take 5-1 though, if we win next week suddenly were amazing again and Harbaugh is a hero.

I’m not sure what’s worse, the growing pains the team is going through this year or the number of “negative nelly’s” that are supposed to be fans.

I get that all of us expected this year to be a lot better, but there has been small improvements and the majority of the big games are in front of us.

If we can finish out the season with a win over OSU and MSU or ND, I’d consider it a good year, so long as the offense looks significantly better at the end of the season.

Yes, my expectations have dropped from the preseason, but that’s because I didn’t anticipate the new system to slow the team down this much.  However, if the O is improved at the end of the year and we finish strong vs a nose dive, wouldn’t that’d still be a step in the right direction from last year.

So, let’s just support our team and see where we are at the end of the season, as there is no way the negativity helps the team in any way, shape or form.

Funny you saw an embattled quarterback and I saw Shea play his biggest game of the year. BPONE is real. BUT I’m sure they said the same damn thing about Tom fn Brady. You guys only try to reach the negative loud mouth part of the fan base. You have a mic that speaks for the majority. I guess encouragement isn’t part of the media’s fn vocabulary.

Georgia lost to an unranked team.  I thought they looked beatable after the game with Tennessee

Harbaugh has now won 74.1% of his games at Michigan.  Carr had 75.3%.  Bo had 79.6%  (counting ties as ,5 in the win, and .5 in the loss).  I suspect JH's w/l % will drop by season's end, but we'll see.

Went out this evening, had some time to ruminate. Yeah, frustrating, but Michigan football team showed some really good stuff, didn't fold when smacked in the mouth, and won.

It's my team, and I'm rooting for them.

I used to love the James Earl Jones game opening. If we get destroyed by Ped State can we just ditch it for ND MSU and Ohio?  I can’t hear about “championship footbal”l knowing that every visitor in there is laughing their ass off.

I’m not ready to give up. College football and all..but I’m sad.

“That’s not going to satisfy anybody?” Really? They won by 17 points. I’m fine with it.

I watched MSU get stomped by Wisconsin 38-0. My take was that Wisconsin is the real deal, a championship level ball club. No wonder they beat us. We still did better than MSU.

When we beat them last year, and beat them badly, I wonder if Wisconsin fans were calling for Chryst’s head like so many here are calling for Harbaugh’s?

PSU only beat Iowa by 5 points, we beat Iowa by 7 points. Yet the know-all people are saying, well, obviously we’re going to get clobbered by PSU. Really? I mean, we might, and then again, we might win. I didn’t think PSU looked much better than we did against Iowa.

If the great gods of football have given you special insight and a peek at the score, please let me know so I can place a football bet for the first time in my life.

I have to ask: If Michigan wins a championship, or a game, or loses, how does that actually affect your life, assuming that you don’t get your self-esteem from choosing to be a fan of a goddamned college football team?

Do you kick the dog, and yell at your wife and kids, and scream bloody murder at work, or is your life pretty much the same, except your football team did or didn’t win?

I can only speak for myself, and honestly, whether they win or lose doesn’t affect my life at all. The next day, I still have the exact same life.

I understand that we want the team to win, but the level of vitriol here, even when the team wins, is mystifying, humorless, and for the most part, mean-spirited.

College football is entertainment. Period. It isn’t a holy crusade. It’s a game played by young guys. We won today. Deal with it.

Do the emotional hedge. That's what I am contemplating. Bet on Penn state to cover and then, if shocker of shocking happens and UM wins, you'll be happy but slightly poorer.

The reason for pessimism is because Harbaugh rarely coaches competitive football on the road. True, there have been some close losses, like the ref steal at osu in 2016. But generally... We play tight and turtle up on offense in big national television road games. Yippee!
