Hoke Statement On Morris
For what it's worth:
“The safety of our student-athletes is always our top priority. We generally never discuss the specifics of a student-athlete's medical care, but Shane Morris was removed from yesterday's game against Minnesota after further aggravating an injury to his leg that he sustained earlier in the contest. He was evaluated by our experienced athletic trainers and team physicians, and we're confident proper medical decisions were made.
The University of Michigan has a distinguished group of Certified Athletic Trainers and team physicians who are responsible for determining whether or not a player is physically able to play. Our coaches have no influence or authority to make determinations if or when an injured player returns to competition. The health and welfare of our student-athletes is and will continue to be a top priority.”

I'm sure this is exactly what Schlissel wants to deal with tomorrow morning.

Yep. All the way down to Hoke and Brandon walking away without a single fuck to give.

"He was evaluated by our experienced athletic trainers and team physicians, and we're confident proper medical decisions were made."
So his official position sounds like "It's not my fault - other dudes checked him out and THEY made the call he was ok to play."
Why does that not surprise me?

A true Michigan Man would admit his mistake, apologize, and make amends.
Brady Hoke simply blames someone else?
Brady Hoke is not a true Michigan Man.
September 28th, 2014 at 9:24 PM ^
That's not Brady Hoke, that's University lawyers. Whether at the behest of the Regents or Brandon is the question. My money is on Dave, but right now I'd probably blame him for anything.
September 28th, 2014 at 9:35 PM ^
Then show me where Brady Hoke has admitted that he fucked this up.
September 28th, 2014 at 9:41 PM ^
Oh he hasn't. I'm not defending Hoke. I'm just saying he did not craft that statement. He might have signed it after they wrote it for him or whatever, but it wasn't written by him.

STOP SAYING MICHIGAN MAN. God. This is part of the problem.

It seems like the training staff and physicians failed to execute yesterday after having a great week of practice.
September 28th, 2014 at 9:29 PM ^
Great commnet.
Is it just me, but the whole "we had a great week of practice" and "our team is really together" seem like statements of someone either lying or completely out of touch with what is happening with this team.

A pre-canned generic statement that doesn't even address the primary issue (concussion) that everyone is concerned with. Must have cut this out of his script for tomorrow's press conference.
Dave Brandon and the Hokester are the only people conceited and stupid enough respectively to believe this statement will do anything to defuse the situation. If anything, this limpid, non-explanation statement is just going to embolden people as they have clearly indicated the athletic department is feeling the heat. Brilliant strategic decision and fits everything that has been done on the field over the past 3 years
September 29th, 2014 at 5:40 AM ^
. . . but I'm pretty sure you mean "limp" because "limpid" is about the exact opposite of what this explanation was.

You should have your friend suggest to his superiors / co-workers that they state that conclusion publicly. Your post is of infinite more utility than the press release that was issued
September 28th, 2014 at 9:29 PM ^
And there is no way they knew that before he was sent back into the game when Gardner lost his helmet. It is completely impossible for them to have determined that.
And considering that UM partners with the Michigan High School Athletic Association with this:
http://www.uofmhealth.org/medical-services/brain-neurological-condition…
and halfway down the page is this:
Four modules make up the Concussion Action Plan
- RECOGNIZE the signs and symptoms
- REMOVE athlete from play
- REPORT to a coach, parent or athletic trainer
- RECOVER completely before returning to play
means your friend is full of it.

Agree 100%, I was going to say this myself but my internet was messing up.

The conspiracy nutcases are going to be all over this like flies on caca.
September 28th, 2014 at 10:03 PM ^
Multiple people have explained to you that it's irrelevant whether or not Morris actually suffered a concussion. What matters is that he showed obvious signs of possibly having suffered one, at which point he should have been immediately taken out of the game and examined.
But you don't have any desire to accept the simple logic of that so whatever. I'd love to see the plethora of "conspiracy nutcases" who have been commenting on these posts.
September 28th, 2014 at 9:31 PM ^
That's actually irrelevant. He had symptoms consistent with those of a concussion. Keep him out. And there's no way a valid concussion protocol takes the time it took between Gardner's insertion and Gardner losing his helmet (three plays).
September 28th, 2014 at 9:34 PM ^
And they knew that by not doing a concussion test, naturally.

hobble around on a leg that was injured, my first thought was that he was collapsing in pain. But yeah, I'm not a doctor, and certainly not one qualified to make a diagnosis from watching a TV, so I bow to your unqualified expertise and wisdom.
September 29th, 2014 at 12:10 AM ^
Even if it turns out he wasn't concussed, though, letting him go back in the game without a concussion test seems criminal.
Hell, even if Dr. Hoke somehow knew he wasn't concussed by sight, letting a guy with a leg injury so bad that the announcers think he's dazed go back in the game is irresponsible, isn't it?

Hoke has been in full-on bunker mode ever since Penn State last year. Seems to be responding to adversity by walling off any voices but internal ones. Which is the dead opposite of healthy. I think the University administration or Regents need to step in to clean this mess up, but I am afraid that they will not.
September 28th, 2014 at 9:23 PM ^
Why not simply I made a mistake and I am sorry?
September 28th, 2014 at 9:33 PM ^
Liability.
September 28th, 2014 at 9:36 PM ^
Opens you up to all kinds of future accountability. Legal and otherwise. For instance, people will then expect apologies for how dreadfully awful this team has been.

The Athletic Department is essentially a corporation. They see the public opinion going against them so their PR people and their lawyers get together to issue a bland public statement. Whatever.

September 28th, 2014 at 9:24 PM ^

Except concussions. Those aren't injuries. Hell, they're barely even boo-boos.
