Hail to the Victors 2018 is Coming Comment Count

Seth

The moment you have been waiting for all summer—other than the Draftageddon horses I mean—is near at hand. The books are printed, and I had a few boxes rush-shipped to me for those who chose a pickup option. The rest of the unsigned Kickstarter orders will be mailed out next week—I am giving them all the addresses on Monday, and then the vigils can begin.

If You Bought a Copy Through Our Kickstarter and chose "Pick-Up in Ann Arbor"

Matt Demorest from HomeSure Lending and I plan on being right there^ about 4:30 p.m. this Monday, July 23 and hanging until 9:00 p.m. or thereabouts. I'll check off your books, Matt is buying a round, and here's a reminder that if you're buying or refinancing a house, he's the guy. Wolverine State Brewing is at 2019 W Stadium Blvd, Ann Arbor, MI 48103 behind the Advanced Auto Parts. Come in the front door and we should be at that table there. Stick around for a beer and Trivia Night if you want, or just come in and grab your copy. Please bring your Kickstarter order # and some form of ID.

If You Bought a Copy Through Our Kickstarter and chose "Pick-Up in Southfield"

Gordon Fall of New York Life Insurance is hosting a pickup location at his office. He'll have the books all day so stop by on your way to work or on your way home from it. Also if you're a mortal human being who's responsible for the welfare of other human beings, you probably should talk to Gordon about making sure they're okay if you're suddenly not. I also recommend doing that before reading the opponent previews.

Address is 27777 Franklin Rd in Southfield. This is the large glass tower topped by a green Citizens Bank sign on all four sides.

  • If you're coming from the west, get off of 696 at American Drive, take a left, and the first two turns into parking lots on the right side of the road turn into the building.
  • If you're coming from the south or east, get off on Northwestern Highway from 696 or 10, do a u-turn to turn onto Beck going south, turn left onto Franklin, and follow that into the building.
  • If you're coming from the local area, the building is off of Franklin Road, just south of 696. The building is just west of Telegraph, and just south of 696.

Enter and you'll see Gordon set up at a table by Starbucks in the open area downstairs.

If You Bought a Copy Through Our Kickstarter and Now You're Wishing You Chose to Pick It Up this Monday Rather Than Wait Some Weeks for the Mail

I have extra copies that were sent because some people chose pickup by accident. Email me by Sunday and let me know if you want to do that. I plan on going through those emails Sunday evening.

If You Ordered from Our Kickstarter and Are Waiting to Commence Your Mailbox Vigil

image

The printer will get your addresses Monday. From there it'll take some time to get 3000 envelopes addressed and stuffed and mailed. It's a mail house that's doing all that, not me. You don't want me doing that. You can check your order status here on the handy-dandy spreadsheet here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11Mt3bbLI4EHPbcXITPUsFKYr-O1evUx-FGma0pEZlS8/edit#gid=155334727

It requires that you find your Kickstarter order# so I don't put everyone's personal information out there. Instructions are at the link for finding your Kickstarter #.

If everything's on the up-and-up give it at least until August 10th before contacting me. Most books come in a timely manner, but with that many there are bound to be stragglers. Might want to add an umbrella to that chair just in  case.

If I don't have your address (link takes you to the list of shame) by now, your book will probably be delayed. There are still 40 backers who haven't taken the survey or gotten me their address somehow. If you didn't fill out the survey THIS YEAR (or order a t-shirt) I don't have your address. I don't have the address for your credit card—that stays between you and Kickstarter. If you've been getting emails from me lately, you need to get me your address.

If You Missed the Kickstarter and Want a Hardcopy

We have the book on pre-order from the MGoBlog Store, via Underground Printing. A pallet of copies will be arriving there late next week, and they'll start shipping out those pre-orders then. Pay no attention to the late "Ships by" date because we were managing expectations.

It will also be available in a few select stores, hopefully by late next week. For sure we'll be in Underground Printing and the Bo Store, the MDen, Literati, and Nicola's Books. I'll post an official annoucemen.t

If You Missed the Kickstarter and Want a Digital (PDF) Copy

Those are now on sale as well from the MGoStore. It's $10.00 and for special this year I made the table of contents interactive so you can get around it easier.

If You are Like Me and Want to Read Everything on a Kindle

image

We have a Kindle Edition. It has fewer photos and some of the articles have been restored to their original length. This was not available to Kickstarter backers because getting a free copy onto everyone's devices is too much to troubleshoot. One day when Amazon makes it easier to do that we'll have a Kindle Version option on the Kickstarter, but not This day.

If You Prefer to Read iBooks

image

I still don't know how to get the book on iBooks. I'm figuring it out slowly. For now go back to sending Animojis to your 3-year-old niece and I'll let you know if I have any luck.

Thanks.   Just got my e-version.    Can’t wait to start reading.   Will you ever be able to explain the issue with ND that you had said was delaying the e-book?

We used some photos from their version of the Bentley Library for our Notre Dame article by John Kryk, but John didn't know when he got their original consent that we even had a digital edition. So when I went to sign the form I noticed we had only non-digital rights and I talked to them about it and they were very specific that we could not make those images available in any digital format and had to delete the originals off our machines when we were done making the book.

Because we (accidentally) hadn't been totally forthcoming from the beginning, and because I still wanted to use those images in the print mag, I offered to redesign those pages without their images for the digital edition, and to give them an opportunity to look over the digital version (like they required for the print version) before we made it publicly available.

Then they took weeks to respond. The had approved the text (not the final pages) of the print version, and I already had signed consent for that, so it didn't delay the print version. But I did have to wait for 3 weeks of prodding to get them to look at the digital edition and confirm we didn't use their images.

Notre Dame is no Michigan.

FYI the digital edition (non kindle) is missing p 51 with a duplicate 53 in its place - the devil face where Maryland defense should be caught my eye scrolling through. I already got my Piggy fix which is all I want to know about Maryland, anyway, but thought you’d want to know and that might be an easy edit.

Also you don’t have an iBooks problem. Anyone can open/save the PDF in iBooks via that little box with an arrow button along the top or bottom (depending on device/iOS) of safari.

Really enjoying this year’s edition 50+ pages and two bourbons in!

What'll be the delivery mechanism for the fix ... just download again?

I'm amazed the PDF is only 16MB.  The PDF has a bunch of photos, and they're all pretty high quality (low loss) photos.  So count me impressed.  And grateful -- I'm on satellite internet (middle of nowhere West Virginia) and I have a 25GB/month limit.

Thank Underground for handing it so quickly.

The photos are actually not very high-res. Pages with the opponent info boxes had to be higher resolution so those could be legible, but art figured out a way to do those later in the book (in the roundtable) so that they come out much nicer in digital, and I'm trying to figure out how.

The version the Kickstarter backers got was 12 mb.

Any chance you'd share some of the technical behind-the-scenes on the production of the book?  Things like -- editor tool used, fonts selected (and why), any discussions/debates on layout and style, any content that had to be left out for space considerations, etc?  I find that stuff fascinating.  I suspect others on MGoBlog might as well.

Re: iBooks, I mean for turning the kindle edition (flowed text) into an iBooks book. Their whole iTunes Connect business is awful--the web-based part doesn't ever work, they demand a billion verifications and continually log you out in the middle of the process, and they make you use their god-awful software. I gave up last year and nobody seemed to care. Unless someone requests it I'm done. Fuck Apple.

Even with this highly informative post, there will still be people making threads asking “when is HTTV coming? Did you get yours?”

Patience, people. Just have patience.
