PSU Road Trip
Will be in State College for M-PSU next weekend. Our family has not missed a game there since the series began in 1993. Was wondering where all M fans were staying? We are staying in the Ramada in Altoona, which is about 40 minutes out of State College.
They have a sports pub so hopefully a pep rally can commence there Friday night.
I think Denard is going to run a ton next weekend.

i once stayed there. whatever, have a great time, don't worry about where you're staying. and i hate to say this but it's true - state college smells like a farm. be prepared.

I live in rural Shenandoah Valley, VA where I smell skunk, cow dung or chicken shit everyday. State College is like the big city to me.

Scored some tickets on the 40 yard line for a decent price (although the prices will continue to drop).
Planning on heading to the Waffle Shop for breakfast on Saturday and checking out the campus. We are still working on a tailgate plan for the day. Has anyone ever done the alumni sponsored tailgate? That has been an option we are considering. Going to be a rockin' good time in Happy Valley when Denard breaks his first big run.
The best part? On top of everything else. It's Halloween weekend. Yes.

stroll down College Avenue and go to the Creamery on campus for an ice cream. PSU students always try to direct out of towners to Chumley's, which is a gay bar for food and drink. Don't fall for that one like I did. They still have not found that kids body! You can do better than Waffle House on College Avenue. We like the Cafe 210 West.

Dark Horse Tavern to avoid the metrosexual pretty crowd for drinking.
+1 on Cafe 210, we always stop there when in State College. Get the beer batter fries. For breakfast hit The Diner which serves breakfast all the time and has awesome sticky buns that are grilled with butter on them.
Honestly, the Creamery is overrated and the line is long as hell. Side-by-side you couldn't taste the difference between that and Hershey's or Turkey Hill (assuming you have those).
The Chumley's thing is too funny.

My wife and I went to the alum tailgate at the rose bowl in '07. Pretty cool. Good grub and a bunch of friendlies in a hostile environment can't be bad. The band stopped by for a bit, too. I'd definitely recommend at least checking it out.

Lion's Den (NTLD) is a good place to watch the game. Got beers given to us by Penn State fans after the loss as a consolation.

Would anyone happen to have room for 2 college guys in their car/van/RV to go to the PSU game? We have a place to stay overnight, but no ride to and from.
E-mail me here if you do and thanks in advance!

Heading down to State College with a friend. We're taking a bus on Sat, but unfortunately our return bus is not until early Sunday morning. Does anyone know what what to do or places to go (that are open 24 hrs I guess)? Conversely, is there anyone who wants to hang out or has a hotel to stay near campus (we'd be happy to contribute financially, via alcohol, whatever, for a couple of hours of some floor to crash on)?

going on a UM Alumni tour bus? The closest hotel to State College is generally Altoona. College Avenue in State College is a fun place with many restaurants and shops.
October 21st, 2010 at 1:27 AM ^
Yeah, what bus are you taking?
October 21st, 2010 at 1:42 AM ^
Headed from NYC and taking one of the Chinatown buses straight to State College, and then taking a bus back to NYC on Sunday.
VAWolverine, not taking the alumni bus, as explained. Wasn't planning to rent a car (doesn't make much sense), and thus doesn't seem to make sense to head 40 mins out and come back the next morning.

I was debating going to this game from NYC(and still am.) But, hotels seem to be a problem. Is State College in bumble****, PA? I dont' think i'd want to make the 4 hour trek back to nyc that night, but I'd probably need to drive 1-2hrs to a hotel ... which still stinks.
Ahh, luckily I got my M fix @ ND. I still am very tempted to go. Does anyone know where the M section will be?

If your coming from NYC or points east, stay in Lock Haven.

Could you link to alumni association bus info? Can't find anything on their site. Thanks

Took an RV with a bunch of friends my sophomore year (2008) and had an all in all great time. Like any place, there are bad apples (generally students, of course) but if you can avoid those people I'm sure you'll find many folks that will gladly welcome you to their tailgate. Then again, given that you haven't missed a game there in a while, I'm sure you already know this. Go Blue!

Can someone please tell me what buses or other modes of transportation will be going from Ann Arbor to the PSU game and back? I can't find anything online.

I'm pretty sure that we'll be tailgating right near the stadium on the way from campus. I can't recall exactly but if you see two lone Michigan fans tailgating with some Penn State fans stop and say hi.
I'll be the guy in the new #2 jersey (for our shifty, quick starting RB who is now much maligned and backup or our future shutdown CB...awkward. At least it will always be Woodson's number) and my wife will probably be sporting her new #5 jersey (for our future awesomely named safety Vlad or our gun-slinger starting QB...double awkward)
October 21st, 2010 at 11:55 AM ^
Sorry but Vlad is gone
October 21st, 2010 at 12:44 PM ^
I know. That's why I said "double awkward". Vlad is gone and Tate is no longer the starting QB.
Side note: There's hope! #5 did get picked up by another DB ... who is now on the front page for giving out free points...maybe next time I just get a jersey with no number

I called and got my parking pass for 10 bucks which is awesome you can get them cheap and early there. All I know is they said we could go into any yellow zone and thats where we will be tailgating. This may be a loser thing, or awesome, dont really care what anyone says, I'm carving a big M into a pumpkin for our tailgate.

I was wondering if anyone would start a thread next weekend where we can check-in with where everyone is at. Sound like a good idea?
October 21st, 2010 at 10:31 AM ^
i'm going down, but do not have the necessary tailgate gear. Any recommendations on where to eat?
October 21st, 2010 at 11:20 AM ^
Hopefully going down with another member from here. No idea where I'm staying, but I'll be tailgating and having a great time nice and early.

We are staying in Lamar at the Comfort Inn, its about 30 minutes east of state college right off the highway, it has a Perkins attached to it so me and my 3 buddies should be able to score on the same waitress.
