Marvin Robinson to Start?
From Adam Rittenberg's chat today:
"
Daniel (Orlando)
What is going on with Michigan defense this year? Marvin Robinson is expected to start saturday, so he will burn his redshirt. Do you think it will be another shootout in Ann Arbor this weekend against Bowling Green?"
Did I miss something?
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:32 PM ^
He's already been on the field for special teams.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:35 PM ^
Please note:
"Marvin Robinson to Start?" not "Marvin Robinson to Redshirt?"
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:37 PM ^
I know. Just stating the fact that he already burned his redshirt. OK. I added nothing here. Fail on my part.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:38 PM ^
+1 for a fail that made me laugh here at work.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:39 PM ^
Hah, don't worry it's all good.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:59 PM ^
Not a fail. This sentence clearly implies he still has his red shirt: "Marvin Robinson is expected to start saturday, so he will burn his redshirt."
September 22nd, 2010 at 4:15 PM ^
Yes, but that sentence was from a guy in the chat with Rittenberg, not Adam. He obviously isn't paying attention to special teams if he thinks MRob hasn't played.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:14 PM ^
Didn't Brian mention something in mail bag the last couple weeks where a guy could play the first 4 games of a year and if he gets an injury that ends his season, he wouldn't lose that year of eligibility?
He also said around week 4 is a time where injuries seem to happen.
If he can help us back there, I am all for playing him regardless of the eligibility issues.
September 22nd, 2010 at 5:35 PM ^
Robinson does not play for the rest of the season (which is highly unlikely) he would still have to apply for a medical redshirt and may not even receive it.
Robinson will end up being too good not to play.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:32 PM ^
He has played on Special Teams, so a redshirt is no longer an option to begin with.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:39 PM ^
No kidding? You don't say...
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:34 PM ^
i'd say you missed a little.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:35 PM ^
Starting in the Thomas Gordon spot? T-Gord has been playing decently so maybe this is a chance at giving a back-up some playing experience. If the redshirt is gone then you might as well get him some PT....also could be he really earned it in practice.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:38 PM ^
I believe he's listed on the depth chart as backing up Kovacs, so IF he is starting I'm guessing it's in place of Kovacs.
September 22nd, 2010 at 4:26 PM ^
Maybe Brian's wishes are coming true and Kovacs is starting at MLB.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:37 PM ^
Wasnt he hurt anyway earlier in the season?
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:41 PM ^
it may have been a very minor injury. He hasn't been listed on the injury report that last couple of weeks.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:52 PM ^
He missed the UMass game due to a minor shoulder injury.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:39 PM ^
The redshirt is gone, if our coaching staff believes that this well help the defense perform better and put us in a better position to succeed then I am all for it.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:45 PM ^
This may be a bit of an "Well, we've gotta try SOMETHING" move. That said, the kid should be good. No reason he shouldn't save inexperience.
I'm more concerned with Carvin Johnson's status.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:09 PM ^
This may be a bit of an "Well, we've gotta try SOMETHING" move.
Starting from a low base it will most likely help us. Its not a total panic move, hopefully GERG can empty the bench against BGSU and everyone gets to play like its a 2nd grade soccer game.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:47 PM ^
It is rumored that he will put the fear of God into receivers with a single stare causing all opponents to just look, cry, then give up on the routes and run off the field.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:52 PM ^
that it was seeing M-Rob on tape that caused Dantonio's heart attack.....
..... too soon?
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:55 PM ^
Is this the stare you are referring to?
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:08 PM ^
Instead of Sasquatch, they should have "Messin with MRob" commercials, where someone does something stupid, MRob gives them that stare and then proceeds to decapitate them.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:11 PM ^
Jesus is smart enough not to mess with MRob.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:20 PM ^
So is Sasquatch.

Can he play shirtless too??
September 22nd, 2010 at 4:44 PM ^
Yup. And he's going to carve his number into his chest right before the first snap.
Kinda like Billy in Predator.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:14 PM ^
Yes, that is the stare
I am in denver and am looking for places to hide, but no place is safe, NO PLAY IS SAFE.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:48 PM ^
Am I the only one who can't see the quote?
Anyway, I wonder if this is a move to get Kovacs into the box so that Roh can move back to DE. Either that or have MRob start at the SAM position and keep Kovacs where he is at.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:24 PM ^
T. Gordon grades out, or if he's injured.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:49 PM ^
we should get players as much as experience as we can before we start Big Ten play. Plus, I was wondering how he would stack up against Kovacs, so it will be good to get a look.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:56 PM ^
Get a young kid some experience for the long term? And risk an MGoBoard meltdown if BGSU scores over 20 points? No way, I say we do everything to throttle these "lesser" teams so that the people of MGoBoard sleep easier at night. Forget long term success, these kids at computers need something to feel good about.

I don't know, I wouldn't put much weight into something some dude from Orlando wrote in a question to ESPN's Big Ten blogger. But that's just me.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:54 PM ^
...especially because that poster from Orlando apparently thought that it would be Robinson's first time on the field.
If an "insider" doesn't know that Robinson's redshirt has already been burned, then I doubt he knows whether Robinson will start or not.
September 22nd, 2010 at 5:38 PM ^
I was questioning Daniel from Orlando's credibility from the very begining.
September 22nd, 2010 at 8:52 PM ^
Daniel from Orlando also gave me a great stock tip, and I sold the farm on it. Why am I so trusting?
September 22nd, 2010 at 8:53 PM ^

edit: i swear I did not hit return twice. please save yourself a neg point.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:53 PM ^
Is there anyway he starts in place of C. Gordon?
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:04 PM ^
Was thinking the same thing. I don't see why that wouldn't be feasible.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:53 PM ^
If Michigan has a stud like MRob who can play, then by all means put him in. This guy is one of the best recruiters for our team. I think he will be even more effective when he starts seeing the field on a more regular basis.
As for Carvin Johnson, I think they are just being cautious. They could have used him last week, but it wasn't worth bringing him back and not having him available for the Big 10 campaign. Better to sit him out this week as well and if not needed, against Indiana as well. Have him back for MSU at 100% not 75 or 80.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:54 PM ^
I doubt that whoever asked the question has any credible sources. Someone who has knowledge that M. Robinson is starting would also know that M. Robinson already played this year and thus is not redshirting. And secondly, someone with insider knowledge of M. Robinson starting wouldn't be asking Rittenbarg about what's going on with the D, since he probably knows better himself.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:56 PM ^
I like Cam even if the growing pains have been pretty obvious, any chance Mrob gets a shot at deep safety.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:58 PM ^
Didn't he do better last week? I guess he fumbled a ball he picked off, but.... he seemed to be learning.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:03 PM ^
I thought he was better but then again, did UMASS ever challenge us deep? I don't remember much of that, lots of dink and dunk roll play action pass plays.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:07 PM ^
....UMass did not go deep much. But, I know their QB couldn't find open men sometimes. Maybe he was looking downfield? They scouted us well and I would bet they were looking to burn Cam at some point.
Also, Cam seemed to do well in run support.
I think he improved.
September 22nd, 2010 at 5:47 PM ^
UMass may not have gone deep very often because our DBs were 40 yds off of the line of scrimmage. Some call it a "cushion", I call it "we can't get beat deep if we start off deep" or WCGBDIWSOD for short. Quite effective at beating the long ball.
September 22nd, 2010 at 3:10 PM ^
The defense was so skittish after the ND bombfest that it was a lot of umbrella coverage and 3 man rush, so UMass just took what we gave them (as far as this layman could tell).
