Wow!!!!
September 22nd, 2010 at 9:25 AM ^
They're playing 13 times!?
September 22nd, 2010 at 9:26 AM ^
Its funny how 13 people were thinking the same thing all at once.
September 22nd, 2010 at 9:26 AM ^
Ah Ah Ah
September 22nd, 2010 at 9:26 AM ^
negative 1,000 for you.
September 22nd, 2010 at 9:27 AM ^
Wow. Sorry was posting using the iPhone app. May have found a glitch... Negbang away!
September 22nd, 2010 at 9:28 AM ^
I love a good multiple post in the morning!
September 22nd, 2010 at 9:35 AM ^
I would not have chosen Oct 23. Its right in the middle of the season. Both teams will need a bye week after the game to recoup, Possibly a Thursday nighter the week before. This game would have made more sense at the beginning or end of the season.
Also I love how the article states that it will have major implications for their national champtionship hopes.
September 22nd, 2010 at 9:43 AM ^
Umm Oct 23 is when they're playing this season. They're playing in Dublin on 1st Sep 2012
September 22nd, 2010 at 9:45 AM ^
I remember reading that with the Iphone App you have to type in a "subject" to your reply otherwise your "Subject line" disappears (like it did in your post here)
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:07 AM ^
very good then
the Irish AD heard my comments and made the right choice
September 22nd, 2010 at 9:43 AM ^
Is this assumedly a "home" game for the Irish? Sounds like Navy is walking into hostile territory to me. If I were the Commandant of the USNA, I would park a few ballistic submarines off the coast of Ireland and threaten nuclear fallout if the crowd noise in support of ND exceeds a certain level.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:07 PM ^
You know who doesn't give a shit about Notre Dame football? Everybody in Ireland.
ND will have more fans, but they will all be touristy/bowl game type fans traveling from the US. The crowd will be no factor in preventing Navy from continuing their recent stretch of dominance over the Irish.
September 22nd, 2010 at 9:48 AM ^
I thought this was announced a year ago? ND is also playing at Yankee Stadium this year (which I think is cooler, and more practical)
Which leads me to conclude...Michigan should play Alabama at Citi Field!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:06 AM ^
Citi Field is typically filled with dudes from Tony's Auto Shop and Tony's Repair Store and Tony's Body Shop. But at least people aren't falling off the escalators...
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:37 PM ^
a literal "lol". thanks sir
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:03 AM ^
when Michigan State played Wisconsin in Japan.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:34 AM ^
This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard for a college team.
These kids are students, as well as athletes. I realize this is a business and they are merely pawns in the game trying to get to the NFL, but these kids will get taken out of school in the middle of the year and flown to Europe. They're practice schedules and game schedules will get thrown all out of wack, all for the allure of the "Fighting Irish" playing in Ireland.
Cool idea in theory. Stupid idea in actuality.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:37 AM ^
The game is September 1st. They will not get taken out of school.
If you think any player would have any issue with this, then you're insane.
Teams do this all the time. The basketball team was just in Europe. The volleyball team went to Brazil last year. The NCAA allows each D1 team to travel internationally for competition once every 4 years. It's a great opportunity for the student-athletes to see another culture and still be a part of their athletic committment.

The Navy players will be missing some class; service academies start classes in mid-August, but I'm sure they won't mind too much.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:14 AM ^
Ah, I stand corrected. Still, a week of class early on isn't the end of the world.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:47 AM ^
The service academies start school early and always have class for a week or so in August. So Navy will be in school during this game for sure.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:30 AM ^
Classes at Notre Dame also start in August. They will miss some school. They will probably learn to live with this somehow.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:30 AM ^
Misread the date. Thought it said Oct 23 for Dublin.
I still think this is a dumb idea, but slightly less dumb since it is at the beginning of the year.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:36 AM ^
"The game will be a full NCAA regular season game and the outcome is expected to have a major effect on both teams National Championship prospects. "
I Lol'ed
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:01 AM ^
Alright, call me a newb if you want, but what does the M stand for? Men's National Championship? As opposed to a women's football championship?
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:14 AM ^
Stands for "Mythical," because the rationalists don't believe that a non-playoff championship is real. (I am not a rationalist.)
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:49 AM ^
Ah, I see. Can't believe I never picked that up before.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:15 PM ^
It's called "mythical" because the NCAA does not actually award a national championship for FBS football (this is unique amongst NCAA sports).
Consequently, all claims of being "national champion" indirectly rest on popular consensus. The writer's and coaches polls are typically used as manifestations of this but, as we have seen, sometimes even they disagree. The BCS arrangement is an attempt to simplify the argument but again, as we have seen, this doesn't always work.
This is also why many of the old coaches (such as Bo) and possibly even a few of today coaches usually stress tangible goals such as winning all games, winning the Big Ten and wining the Rose Bowl. If those goals are accomplished then that's pretty much a perfect season regardless of what anybody else says (whether sportswriter, fan, or team from the SEC, Big 12, whatever).
A non-playoff championship is certainly real, but it may lack legitimacy. Does a two-loss (or even a one-loss) team really deserve the title of "national champion?" I'm not sure they do...but I am also comfortable with the possibility that some years simply do not have a national champion.
September 23rd, 2010 at 9:14 PM ^
"I am also comfortable with the possibility that some years simply do not have a national champion."
This is an idea I wouldn't mind seeing toyed around with some more in a variety of sports. Have some sort of title or set of criteria that teams would need to meet to earn that sport's highest honor. Could be done in conjunction with a "best team of the year" thing, too.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:10 AM ^
i chuckled as well.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:58 AM ^
They played Navy in Dublin probably 15 years ago, or something along those lines. I think it's awesome.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:58 AM ^
Lansdowne Road looks like a pretty cool venue...I almost wish we were playing ND there. Dublin would probably be a more interesting road trip than South Bend.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:14 AM ^
Go Navy!
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:22 AM ^
This game was announced years ago. But, yeah, the poor students: imagine the horror of having to spend a few days in Ireland. During school-time too! The shame and pity of it all.
Here's an idea: UK-based Wolverines should attend this game. Wearing UM shirts and Navy hats obviously.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:18 PM ^
I am thinking of doing that. Only this is that any derogatory chants toasted ND wouldn't really please the locals 'fuck the Irish!'
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:49 AM ^
playing in Ireland instantly makes you relevant again!
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:20 PM ^
If Notre Dame is no longer "relevant", then why does everyone that beats them act like they just won the Rose Bowl? I think ND is still relevant because I still consider them a big game (And it appears almost every other fan base does as well). When they are no longer considered a big game, then I think the relevant argument holds water.
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:52 PM ^
They have that very passionate fan base and it is huge in numbers. They will definitely pull out all the stops until they get it right.
Whether or not they should have those high expectations is an issue, but it is definitely positive for that program that they do.
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:36 PM ^
I'm guessing even though all the players on both teams will be "of age" there, they still won't be allowed to go drinking? What a shame it would be to be in Ireland and not get to take in a pint at the pub.
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:42 PM ^
Pretty sure they played Navy in Ireland back in the 1990's, and I want to say they played Army in the 1980's in Ireland but I can't find a link.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:08 PM ^
They should take Freekbass along for a halftime rendition of "We Are ND" to give them the full-on ND experience.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:08 PM ^
Go Navy! I'm a pretty happy for the past few years of Navy football because they have been doing fairly well.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:59 PM ^
Navy will face Notre Dame in the newly constructed Aviva Stadium on Saturday 1st September 2012. The game will be a full NCAA regular season game and the outcome is expected to have a major effect on both teams National Championship prospects.
...
”We are all delighted that Navy has chosen Aviva Stadium for its game against Notre Dame in 2012,” said Aviva Stadium Director Martin Murphy. “We fully realize just how important this game is in the U.S. sporting calendar and we are looking forward to hosting what will undoubtedly be a fantastic event.

Inshallah we go 13-0 this year.
