i turned it on halfway through the second period without having any idea who was in the booth...and i honestly and truly throught i had turned on something like a notre dame version of the teamcast thing tbs / tnt did during the final four hoops broadcast. not even kidding.
then buccigross said "barry" and i still didn't know who it was.. it didn't even occur to me that it was barry melrose. i didn't recognize buccigross' voice yet, either.
once i realized what was happening...well, i usually like buccigross, and he had seemed at least semi-neutral. as for melrose, i don't know if he was "biased" as much as "incompetent" and "unprepared." he knew more names from notre dame, so he focused on them. brutal in general.
I saw the OP and agreed with it. I remember watching last night and thinking that the commentary was noticeably pro ND. It's possible that the broadcasters were just running with the frontrunners, but I did notice it which is not what you want.
More importantly, Bucci was pretty bad with some of his calls and Melrose clearly missed several inferences/jokes. But, I did find him strangely enjoyable. I feel dirty.
Also, rough fucking week jeez.
Melrose was actually displaying an anti-B1G bias more than anything. On a couple occassions he seemed to dis the idea of 75% B1G in the Frozen Four and emphasized Duluth as the team that could keep the B1G from winning the championship. If anything, I think they've got an east-coast hockey bias.
I hope that the people complaining in this thread about the commentary will remember this discussion the next time that somebody laments that NHL coverage isn't on ESPN. Maybe this is a valuable reminder for how irredeemably shitty their sports coverage is and how they can ruin it with simple choices like putting shitty announcers on the game.
