I had tried to forget that game. Year after we won the whole thing. Everyone on Loyola would run down the floor, take 5 secs off shot clock throw up 3 pointers from everywhere, all players eligible to shoot, and seemed like 75% went in. Like a bad 80's movie.
Saving grace was the next game, Loyola and their run and gun got outran and outgunned big time by UNLV's pro team, the best 5 players I ever saw on a NCAA team at same time. Loyola got their asses handed to them - as we likely would have had we beat Loyola.
I will say though....that game seemed equally nuts in its own right. I think it was 131-101 at the end. All I can remember thinking is, "Imagine scoring 101 and still losing by thirty. Loyola Marymount can."
That UNLV team though - Greg Anthony, Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, George Ackles, Anderson Hunt....that was quite the show.

shot 50 percent from 3, played inspired basketball; no one was going to beat them that day
suuuuucked. Steve Fisher's brilliant idea to run with LMU was possibly one of the worst coaching decisions I had seen up to that point in my nascent sports watching career. One of the most unbelievable games UM played.

what a nightmare...it was the whole Hank Gathers thing who passed away right before the tournament and they were just on FIRE!! it was awful...and we barely escaped the first game as well

LMU damn near scored 100 pts in the second half alone. i don't think there was a point in time when all 10 guys were on the same end of the court.
the old adage that 3 is worth more than 2 was very true that game.
i've never seen anything like it, and probably never will again.
Can someone explain why this was downvoted exactly?

That is all!
Who's got it better?

"Is it just board fodder?"
That's a very good question. I did a little digging and unearthed this arcane stuff:
History (from Greek ἱστορία, historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation") is the study of the past as it is described in written documents. Events occurring before written record are considered prehistory. It is an umbrella term that relates to past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of information about these events. Scholars who write about history are called historians.
Amazingly, people even build large buildings entirely devoted to "history"—they're generally called "museums."
Perhaps even more incredibly, many institutions of higher learning have entire departments devoted to "history." This even applies to the University of Michigan, believe it or not.
And though it's hard to believe, some people have even written entire books about the "history" of U-M sports. Go figure.

Great data. Couple of quick questions:
1) In our 4-6 record v. #1 seeds, pretty sure we were not a #1 or #2 seed during any of those games. Is that correct?
2) Is the last time we were a #1 seed in the mid to late 80s, when we had Tarpley leading us. I would guess the 1986 tourney.
Just wanted to point out that we have upset a lot more teams than being upset ourselves in the Tourney.

couldn't remember if we had been a #1 seed during Fab Five's sophomore year. Do you know if we have been a #2 seed since 1985? I don't think so, but not sure.

Should be 5- 5 vs. no. 1 seeds.....
Wait, we say that. Because it’s true.
The block never happened. It's all good.
We scored 149 . . . and still lost by 34.
Hank Gathers' ghost was still playing.
The game tracked sort of like Germany 7 - Brazil 1 in the World Cup. Once Brazil got down 2 they panicked and tried to get it all back at once, which opened the door for yet more scores against them.
LM came out on fire and once it became clear that they were going to keep scoring, Michigan panicked a little bit and got impatient and tried to run with them and shoot threes.
Each possession was three dribbles and a three attempt, back and forth. We made a lot of those, but they made more.

LMU didn't play defense, they pretty much let u shoot from three hoping you miss

It's surprising to me how many people aren't aware of that game. I wasn't even alive yet and I've known of that for a long time.
The Hank Gathers story, too. He collapsed on the court and died in the conference tournament 2 weeks prior to when we played them.
