OT: Yahoo Report now ties MSU Asst. Dwayne Stephens to ASM via Email

Submitted by WorldwideTJRob on

This is a new report that just dropped moments ago, and it is starting to get harder and harder for the MSU basketball program to deny they did anything improper. The new report shows and email Christian Dawkins sent to his boss Andy Miller detailing that Stephens wanted to "trade" Miles Bridges & Gary Harris(assuming this meant Izzo or Stephens would convince them to sign with ASM) for the chance of obtaining Brian Bowen. It is a slow drip, but I have a feeling Yahoo Sports has a lot of these documents up their sleeve that they will reveal over the next few weeks leading up to March Madness.

The cliffs notes version of what this chicago coach told me:
- We (Michigan) were a dirty program in the 90s, but so was every other major program at that time. We were no more dirty than anyone else.
- Michigan is clean now, so they stay out of Chicago all together.
- Michigan State is a dirty program now, but uses Dwayne Stevens to do the dirty work, not Izzo.
- Duke is dirty as all hell, but the recruitment of Jabari Parker was relatively clean.
- To some of the Chicago kids, Amaker was the “whitest” coach they’ve met during the recruiting process.

My third bullet is most relevant to the OP and aligns well to it.

Big Ten coach who said Bruce Weber would never survive at Illinois because he refused to get dirty in recruiting - and that was a requirement to recruit Chicago kids. The HS coaches control the racket. His follow up point: everybody who ever recruits the top talent in Chicago plays the game. [And he had landed some kids from Chicago.]

This is not only one of Izzo’s most talented teams, there also isn’t a dominant team in the country this year. Teflon Tom will do anything to win that title this year. They don’t deserve to win SHIT

I was reading RCMB and the posts reminded me that more facts are needed. Just because numerous allegations have been made, it could all still be a media hit job. First ESPN and now that no-talent hack Pat Forde! I mean what a yahoo!

Im not willing to rush to judgement on the Yahoo report and we definately need more information before we can begin to condemn people but this is not a media hit job. Are they being treated unfairly on social media? Yes, probably. Because thats the nature of our culture  these days. Outrage with little information that makes us feel superior. Thanks for that Twitter and Facebook.

committee is going to take any of this breaking information into account. They might have to come up with a new Q5 quadrant: won lost record against dirty programs. Our wins over MSU, IU, PSU, Maryland and Texas could boost us up to a 1 or 2 seed.

Over at The Only Colors they're deliberately reversing this story. in their telling, the agent tried to get Stephens to steer Harris and Bridges to him in exchange for Bowen, which MSU, on the side of righteousness, declined.

Seriously though, those offers don't come out of the blue. It's a strong indication of a working relationship. Offering a deal like that to an honest coach would be taking an enormous risk.

There are thousands of hours of wiretapped conversations in the hands of the feds. Leaking the info in the Yahoo stories may be a way to pressure coaches to cooperate. I'm sure they would love to know which of their conversations were recorded.

Does anyone remember a rather suspect posting from years back regarding a retired Chicago basketball coach telling the poster that Dwayne Stephens was MSU's bagman for the Chicago area?  In the posting it was related that Coach Beilein was "not to be trusted".  Anyone?

i knew him when i was a kid.  awesome, straight up dude.  now that he's passed, i take a little solace in that he isn't around to see this happening at msu.

Everyone new Michigan st. was recruiting dirty. Who would want to spend their college years in East Lansing, when them big time recruits could go anywhere in the country..Can’t wait for the feds to release everything they have..

What a joke.  NCAA says no big deal, go ahead and play Bridges, Sexton, Know, and Carter.  Not sure if this includes Ayton too.

Here you have evidence released by the FBI implicating coaches, players, and family of players and the NCAA's response is, "Nothing to see here folks."

in Detroit area even I knew players were getting impermissible benefits and steered to certain Universities.I am so sick & tired of listening to the Media boot licking scum bags like Bilas & Vitale & the 97.1 Izzo ass kissing bloviators saying how shocked they are to hear that such paragons of virtue as Izzo & Coach K. were even tangentially involved in this.EVERYONE KNEW HOW THE GAME WAS PLAYED.....Many Universities had a 'guy' in Detroit ,in Flint etc.who steered kids to their University. For example,George Raveling (currently working for Nike) Head Coach of Iowa had his guy who delivered players such as B.J.Armstrong (Detroit) and Roy Marble (Flint).Paul Evans Head Coach of Pitt had his guy who delivered Demetreus Gore and so on...Anyone on TV who says they are 'shocked' are lying shills,it's the equivalent of someone saying they're 'shocked' to hear that Madonna is not a virgin.

I was a middling PG on an AAU team years ago and the underhanded shit was undeniable. I was even approached by a D1 assistant who blatantly asked about my friendship with a teammate who was a star and whether I wanted to help him get the best scholarship. He wasnt trying to give me Mr Rogers advice on friendship. I was too naive to seize the opening for personal gain because I didn’t have D1 eligibility to worry about!

Thank you John Beilein! Last night the talking heads on ESPN were saying nothing will happen to Bridges or should it because you are only talking about 400.00,  in the emails on the ATM receipt the 400.00 is labeled a" advance "to Bridges mom. Spartans can act as if Izzos name is not tied this all they want but their boat  is taking on water

Suspended Steve Alford for posing for a picture that appeared in a Calander for a Charity,he received no money. The NCAA are always making sure that there isn't even a hint of any Student-Athlete doing anything to jeopardize their Amatuer status.

Izzo has a weak track record with player development to create early NBA draftees despite top recruits for many years. Top BB recruits are not choosing a program so they can spend 4 years playing ugly basketball, slapping the floor and hurting their draft potential in exchange to play a few games in March Madness.

Do people understand that this is only one of many sports agents out there who specialize in signing up teenagers for professional representation?  This came out of a result of the Adidas company paying for high school players to attend certain schools.  What about Nike and Reebok?  I can almost guarantee that Nike has a lot of skeletons in their closet.  What about the dozens of other sports agents that will make Dawkins and Miller seem like amateurs?  Basketball is a big problem, but football may end up being even worse.  The bagmen need to go to jail for fraud and non-payment of taxes, and the agent companies and athletic equipment companies need to be fined to near-bankruptcy status.  This has been going on way too long and the NFL and NBA have been complicit through their silence and inaction.  Every single person guilty of aiding and abetting this corruption of the collegiate system needs to go down and be banned from professional and collegiate sports for life!

Give me our brand of arrogance any day of the week.

It's almost breathtaking how openly things were being discussed... in email!  They probably can be excused for not thinking about their phone lines being tapped, but to put all this in email format is something else.

Interesting too that rival agencies are mentioned - tip of the iceberg no doubt.  What agency did Bridges sign with?

I certainly am by no means implying that this is all OK, but think about what you are saying for a minute.

These are agents, doing agency work and securing future business for their agency.  You just can't expect them to not be communicating via company means.  These are employees reporting to their bosses on their work.  In their (the agents') minds much of this is just doing business as usual, so why wouldn't they use company email?  The agents aren't under the gun here for most of the things we are irate about.

It's other things the agents did that the FBI is investigating and that brought all of this to light.  These emails are just evidence against the elligibility of recruits and of noncompliance withing the NCAA.

The problem is it's a lack of accountability people like Pete Carroll do wrong move on to the NFL without any punishment while the school gets punished and the kids who did nothing wrong are punished they need to punish the coaches take away wins and make it so they can't coach for 10 years maybe that would slow it down and fine the s*** out of them say what you will about Jim Harbaugh or John Beileins Style at least they seem to be above board

"Our compliance office conducted a thorough internal review. [MSU] presented its findings to the NCAA, and Miles Bridges has been cleared for competition moving forward, beginning Sunday at Wisconsin.”

~MSU Interim AD Bill Beekman

NCAA clears him, predictable.

I would love to see Msu get caught especially since the punishment we were dealt from boosters paying players I would honestly just as much rather see Msu go down in the tournament at full strength so we don’t have to hear the whining from their fan base that they lost their beat player over 400 dollars to his mom. It would be even more sweet if we were the ones to knock them out but obviously that would have to be down the road in the tournament, a first round knock out for Msu would be pretty sweet too.
