OT- Michigan Early Action
I applied to Michigan Early Action and was wondering if anyone knew the exact date they would be announcing. I know it will come out by the 24th but was hoping to hear earlier so I could suprise my mom with an acceptance letter and Michigan gear. I hope to be a third generation Wolverine and have grown up a huge fan so I am a bit anxious. Any insight knowledge would be appreciated.

I can't be the only degenerate that saw this title and assumed it was about gambling, right?

I was sorely disappointed to see that it centered around real, meaningful discussion about academics and not gambling lines.
Wishing all applicants the best of luck. Ann Arbor really will change your life.

You are correct.

I can't be the only degenerate that immediately thought the OP didn't/shouldn't have enough points to start a thread.

I thought it was about someone getting a nooner.

I had a meeting with a UM Development officer on a different matter today (grant proposal by UM Student Life to a foundation I’m a board member of), but the topic of my son’s app status naturally came up.
She informed me that total expected apps are around 54k this year, and that early action admits are historically around 13k, but this year they are reducing that number to 11k or so. This is in part due to efforts to increase admits and enrollments from less privileged applicants, who are less likely to apply early action to any school, including M.
So that’s the bad news for more privileged applicants. The good news is that the odds of eventual admission if you are not admitted early action are materially higher than in past years.

I realize you're probably looking for an exact date, but the admissions website says "no later than Dec 24th." Seems likely that you'll know by the end of next week.
December 15th, 2017 at 1:39 PM ^
Everything I hear is that you find out on the 24th, maybe later on the 23rd.
December 15th, 2017 at 1:39 PM ^
My daughter is also waiting. Hope you both get in.
December 15th, 2017 at 5:15 PM ^
her and good luck to Crainey. As someone else wrote Crainey, he, your daughter have done all they can do and I would just add very well done to both.

If you are able to figure out how to use it, a website on the Internet would be a good place to check. For instance, I Googled "Michigan Early Action Announcement" and found this website, which said December 24th everyone will receive decisions: https://admissions.umich.edu/explore-visit/blog/apply-u-m-now-piece-ear…
December 15th, 2017 at 1:48 PM ^
Are you sure? I received my decision three years ago.
December 15th, 2017 at 2:25 PM ^
it was kind of funny that he roasted you for mocking what I assume to be an 18 year old high school senior.

that's your style, but I will always laugh when someone is hoisted by their own petard.

YOU CAN'T SAY PETARD ANYMORE!?!?!?!

I would guess the majority of us on this board understand the anxiety surrounding college and/or graduate acceptance, especially from the institution most prized in your mind.
I doubt you had malfeasance in mind FauxMo, but all the same, context would tell you this is a young man starting his journey in life. Last time I checked support in this life is essentail, and I know we do not get all we sometimes want and/or need. SO, on behalf of the board (yes, i'm speaking for YOU, want to fight about it?) you have our support! Hopefully we can welcome you to the Michigan family in the coming days! GO BLUE!!

I assumed a 17 year old HS senior, but that's neither here nor there, i suppose, operative phrase being "HS senior"
December 15th, 2017 at 5:28 PM ^
Why don't you take a seat right over there?
December 15th, 2017 at 3:56 PM ^
If you were able to figure out reading comprehension, you wouldn't have had to google that since OP included that info.
I know it will come out by the 24th but was hoping to hear earlier

Stay away from sewers. This Faux Mo character takes no prisoners. Good luck on EA.

December 15th, 2017 at 1:42 PM ^
You'll find out on Friday, 12/22, late afternoon. Always the Friday before X-mas.
December 15th, 2017 at 1:53 PM ^
High school counselor here-they send out the e-mails late Friday, then go on break for two weeks. This saves them having to spend hours on the phone explaining every individual decision to applicants and parents. I'm guessing everyone's voicemail box is pretty full when they return, though.
Good luck to you, OP. You are certainly not alone in waiting anxiously!
December 15th, 2017 at 9:17 PM ^
Exactly what I tell my seniors, they hit send and then say, "Bye Felicia". It's kind of brilliant.
December 15th, 2017 at 2:08 PM ^
and if you dont receive an email by the 22, check wolverine access. It showed i was accepted a few before I reveived an email.

December 15th, 2017 at 2:15 PM ^
but i thought everyone at MSU chose to go to state?
December 15th, 2017 at 4:00 PM ^
They chose to go to MSU because their other choices were directional schools - Eastern, Western, Northern, Central, etc.
December 15th, 2017 at 4:35 PM ^
Most only received acceptance letters from MSU and South Detroit.
December 15th, 2017 at 5:26 PM ^
Future Spartans must rehearse this line:
"Why would I want to go to UM?! I could've. But they didn't offer my major."
[give your major - real or imagined - some sort of exotic name]
December 15th, 2017 at 1:44 PM ^
I got in to Michigan early action 9 years ago around the time. Probably the best day of my life. Good luck my friend.
December 15th, 2017 at 1:47 PM ^
In the past, some people have been able to see their decision in Wolverine Access before they received an email notification. I would recommend checking the status of your application in Wolverine Access throughout next week, but I wouldn't expect a decision before Friday (the last business day before Christmas Eve). Even then, Admissions could choose to release the decisions on 12/24 itself.
Also, you should know that deferrals are very common. If you are deffered, try not to be too disappointed - many applicants are admitted after being deferred during Early Action.
December 15th, 2017 at 1:54 PM ^
Best of luck, the above pretty nails it. Hope for something next Friday.
Also in case this doesn't work for whatever reason and even if you don't get a deferred acceptance, I know of several people who went elsewhere for a year, worked really hard and got great grades, and applied (and got in). If you end up having to do that, do yourself a favor and try to take classes that will transfer. The admissions people can work with you on that I believe. Go Blue!

I saw a thread (here) welcoming newly admitted students so I told my daughter to check her email. There was nothing there so she assumed that she didn't make it.
So she started crying. A lot. Luckily, MgoBlog came to the rescue and she checked Wolverine Access. Then I started crying, tears of joy.
That was on 12/23/2016, around 1 or 2pm I think.
Good luck OP.

thats exactly what happened to me. minus the crying

...in a year with my son.
He just took the ACT for the third time. Got the same score the first two times. Hoping he improves by a few points...which should put him in a very strong position to get the opportunity to be a third-generation Michigan Man!
December 15th, 2017 at 2:50 PM ^
He's in the first half of his junior year of high school and he's already taken the ACT three times? That seems excessive. Don't most students sit for standardized tests the first time during the second half of their junior year?
Also, at that rate, why not try the SAT? Maybe the ACT isn't "his test."
December 15th, 2017 at 3:47 PM ^
You want to have finished your ACT or SAT testing by the end of your Junior year so that you have your score by the time you apply in the Fall of your Sr. Year. It takes a couple months to get the score.
So you want to start taking the test early in your Junior year in case you need to take three times or so.
December 16th, 2017 at 7:43 AM ^
Took it again in October. Ran out of time on the last section of math so didn’t fill in answers to seven questions. Only needed ten seconds to fill in the answers, which he had circled in the question booklet. Got the same score so would’ve been one or two points higher if he had finished the math.
Thus why he is taking it a third time. The reality is that these are young kids and there are so many factors that can affect the score for a test taken in a few hours on a weekend morning.
We know someone who took the test four times. 28 on the first three tries; 34 on the fourth. We know other kids who did worse on the second try before improving on the third.

The decision is posted in WA, but no more than a couple hours prior to the e-mail. No need to check WA before Friday afternoon.
