Fix the CFP now...please

Have all the power. I have proposed a similar idea but I don't see them expanding for another few years.

P5 conference champs and one wild card. And never ever either a G5 team or more than 6 total in playoff. More than 6 means a lesser regular season and also means teams that do not deserve to get a chance for a NC would be in.

and that''s an objective fact. Thye might not be worse than Illinois and Kansas but we're talking the playoffs. In the playoffs they are WAY, by leaps and bounds, worse than the top 4, and have zero hope of winning. Not even a punchers chance.
December 3rd, 2017 at 1:44 PM ^
Yep, you're right. Go tell 2006 Boise State and 2008 Utah. Neither one of them had even a punchers' chance of winning their bowl game.
PS: Oklahoma may have been #8, but Alabama was... #4.
December 3rd, 2017 at 1:57 PM ^
the playoffs. There is no motivation for Oklahoma to take Boise seriously in the Sugar Bowl, which after the game every player admitted to. The playoffs are different, and any G5 would find that out, to their dismay

Something something Horror...
Oh, never mind.
Any given Saturday. You never know what might happen. Just ask FGCU or George Mason, to cite basketball examples.
It is beyond sad that there is a system where half of the participants are excluded from the championship before the season begins.
December 3rd, 2017 at 2:22 PM ^
EVERY single player mailed it in for the bowl game, including seniors playing in their last ever game and NFL hopefuls with a lot of scouts watching the game. And losing is so fun why try to win! No motivation whatsoever.
December 3rd, 2017 at 2:17 PM ^
team is usually able to at least be competitive with top 10 teams. 2007 Boise St. and 2009 Utah (pre Pac 12) won games over #4 and #8, even Western gave #8 Wisconsin a close game last year. There is not really a difference of "leaps and bounds" and they have shown that they compete with top teams.
December 3rd, 2017 at 2:54 PM ^
of competition, week-in and week-out. Teams like the ones you mention wouldn't be going 12-0 or 11-1 in the Big Ten, Big 12 or SEC. Not even close.

I think the wild card should always be an undefeated G5 team if available, if not then take a P5

PSU should not have been in last year, given that they lost by 39 to Michigan. And OSU should not have been in this year, given that they lost by 31 to Iowa.
Conference championships are basically arbitrary. If you honestly believe that PSU was a better team than Michigan or Ohio State last year, I don't know what to tell you. But you're also forgetting what divisions can do. 6-6 UCLA was in the Pac 12 Championship game a few years ago (USC was on probation, IIRC). They lost, and then they had to get a waiver to play in a bowl at 6-7. If they had won... you would have given them a playoff berth at 7-6?
Now, personally, I'm a fan of a 24-team playoff, but I seem to be the outlier. (24/128 is in the same ballpark as 68/350, and it allows for 8 byes). If you have 24 teams, yes, you give each conference champion a berth, because at least then you can honestly say that every team controls its own destiny at the beginning of the season. But if you only have 4 or 6 teams, I don't think you can afford to put too much weight on conference championship games.

Agree. It is either 4 or 8. The bye is too big of an advantage and will just go on to create more controversy. The only way a G5 team gets in is if they deserve to be in. A 12-0 UCF still isn't good enough to get in this year even if the field were 8 teams.

I would love the following format:
8 Teams consisting of autobids for the 5 conference champions and 3 at large bids. The teams would still be ranked by the Playoff Committee 1-8. First round of tournament games are played on the home field of the higher rated seed.
I think this format emphasizes conference champions and the regular and at the same time encourages teams teams schedule big boy out of conference games and you could actually punish those teams for not scheduling them ie disqualified if you have 2 loses and play an FCS team. Another advantage is that it gives a G5 team with a strong argument a chance such as the 2006 Boise State team that went undefeated and beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.
One last positive, it would finally make an SEC team come north of the Mason-Dixon line.
Heres how it would look this year:
#1 Clemson - #8 UCF @ Clemson
#2 Oklahoma - #7 Wisconsin @ Oklahoma
#3 Georgia - #6 USC @ Georgia
#4 Ohio State - #5 Alabama @ Ohio State

them. The more important question is does expanding the playoffs make college football better? At some point it will certainly make it worse.
December 3rd, 2017 at 6:44 PM ^
Exactly, if the playoffs get any bigger than the regular season becomes as lame and little watched as ncaa basketball season, and nba, and nfl if there was no fantasy football. What makes cfb so great is how small the post season is and hwo that makes every game potentially be a playoff game. Just need to make teams schedule better OOC.

The system is clearly broken. Conf divisions are broken and need to be eliminated to get the 2 best teams to atleast play for their Conf Championships. I am not saying Wisconsin was a bad team, but give them our schedule and they would be a 2 loss team. Make it an 8 team Playoff with P5 Conference Champions getting Auto Bids and have 3 at large bids.
Use the New Years 6 bowls as the 1st 2 rounds and rotate them yearly.

In my mind UCF should get in not Alabama or OSU.
UCF could actually keep up with Clemson.
I don't want another Clemson-OSU or Clemson-Alabama matchup.
OSU will get their ass kicked again.

If people think Alabama scheduling Mercer is bad now can you imagine what OOC schedules would look like if p5 champs were guaranteed?
December 3rd, 2017 at 10:53 AM ^
I actually think the opposite is true if you went to an 8 team format with 3 autobids. You would essentially be able to tell teams that you're going to be PUNISHED for not scheduling good teams.

December 3rd, 2017 at 1:27 PM ^
And a 12-1 with quality opponents is flashier than a 12-1 with FCS games.
December 3rd, 2017 at 1:49 PM ^
Both of those teams (if Power 5) are going to be in regardless. The schedule is irrelevant.
December 3rd, 2017 at 10:42 AM ^
Conference autobidding is stupid and rewards teams for winning what may be crappy conferences, it's also the opposite of a meritocracy.
