Does small = fast?

but I just watched about half of his junior tape and my initial skepticism was unjustified.
He's listed in his HUDL profile as 6-3/196, but the video says he's 6-4/205. Whatever he is, he's big enough to be able to run through contact; doesn't look like you can arm tackle him.
He's not what I would call fast, but he's got a deceptive ability to make people miss in the open field, and has a good sense of awareness of where defenders are, both in the pocket and in the open field. He appears to be a much more capable runner than any starting QB we've had in recent years, with the obvious sole exception of Denard. (I haven't seen DM in any kind of action)
He uses his mobility to move around in the pocket to find an open receiver; he doesn't bail at the first sign of pressure. However, he's not afraid to pull the ball down and run if there's open space around him.
He'll cock his arm waiting to make a throw, but he's got a pretty quick release once he decides to throw—I didn't see any long wind-up.
One play that stood out to me is at 7:01—the snap is way over his head, but he deftly uses his height to snag it, and then moves out of the pocket and throws a soft jump pass to a RB.
His stats are eye-opening: 135/192 for 2253 yds; 70.3% completion percentage; 16.6 yds/completion; 24 TDs passing/1 INT; 633 yds rushing for 17 TDs
The only real question I have is the level of competition he's faced in Avon, CT. I wonder if this is a Don Brown recruiting contact.
Don't know how up-to-date this info is, but 247/Scout lists his only offers as Syracuse, UConn, Maryland, Minnesota, and Michigan. I bet that changes now that Michigan has offered.

Avon Old Farms plays some top teams in the region but the local competition is stank ass

Definitely racist. Congrats for winning my Asshole Bigot Poster of the Day award. You're actually the first and only winner.

If he ends up a commit, gonna have to pronounce his name while doing stats. Was dead serious about seeking info on pronunciation. Same with Timmy B. years ago.

That's a fairly quick and compact release he's got there.

40 times can be finicky, but they're not nothing.
If 4.97 is accurate, that's not the speed you expect from a "dual threat" QB. Not even close. For comparison, Peyton Manning ran in the 4.8 range. Tim Tebow, whose dual threat was focused on power rather than speed or agility, still managed a 4.71. Pocket-only guys like Matt Leinart get 4.91s.
There are other attributes that make a guy a good runner, true. But you need some acceleration, and 4.97 doesn't have much at all. That's not going to cut it against college athletes. If Harbaugh likes him it's for other stuff.

Everything that needed to be said and more on why this kid shouldnt be labeled a Dual Threat QB.
November 30th, 2017 at 4:59 PM ^
Take a look at the first few minutes of his film and you'll see why he's labeled as a dual threat. He's not a burner, but clearly he's able to pull the ball and run very effectively.
May not translate as an elite running QB at the college level, but you can easily see why he's being labeled a dual threat.

Wow Peyton ran a 4.8 before?! Turning into a bobble head from using "your wife's" steroids must slow you down a step.

For further comparison, here are the 40 times for our current QB's and commits from ESPN's high school recruiting profiles:
Peters - 4.85
McCaffrey - 4.87
Milton - 4.80
Doyle - 4.85

Maybe the year can start going in these OPs... Either way, thanks for sharing! With a name like Prommachanh, he has the chance of going down in Michigan lore.

I wish Chip Kelly cleans house and Harbaugh brings Fisch back to run the pass game and handle playcalling duties. It's probably a .0001% chance of this happening, but I'll still wish for it until it's a zero percent change.

for anything less than total control of play calling?
November 30th, 2017 at 3:28 PM ^
I actually like his tape more than Milton and Doyle.
November 30th, 2017 at 3:35 PM ^
You might not like this but the QB that he most reminds me of in his HUDL tape is JT Barrett. He's not a track star but mobile. Leaps forward in the pocket and has more available yards in the center of the field as opposed to evading the rush laterally. Arm strength is medium. Accurate but floaty. I like him!

Is this a change in direction?
What happened to pro-style pocket passer and smash mouth Michigan football?
Is this because of OSU and MSU have QBs that can run?

DTR was our top target in 2018 and he's a real dual threat QB. If Harbaugh wanted to switch to running QBs he wouldn't have recruited Milton, Doyle and Shough after losing out on DTR. Look at our other 2019 QB offers, 3 pro style and 1 dual-threat. What they have in common is they're very good prospects.
QB mobility is a plus, no matter what offense you run. If Meyer had our QBs this season, he would have run O'Korn a lot more than we did. The same would probably hold true for all the plausibly dual threat types we are currently recruiting. They might be dual threat or running QBs somewhere else, will probably be mobile pro style QBs here.

three were by teams that had QBs who were a running threat --- McSorley, Lewerke, Barrett. Interestingly, all three of these guys played a whole season without serious injury. There's Barrett's knee/leg, but a sideline cameraman aggravated that!
In fact, I look for Peters to leg it out a little more in the bowl game.
November 30th, 2017 at 6:53 PM ^
There is no evidence to support the idea that running QBs get injured more often than traditional drop-back passers.
The only real study I have ever found on the subject looked at NFL QBs, and concluded that mobile QBs were less likely to be injured, but the difference was not statistically significant.

Walsh had Montana and Young on his rosters like when the Niners were the shit. Enough said. Just watched this kid. Taisun and I have no idea how to pronounce his name but he's fricking good. I'm sitting here seeing Mike Vick the second coming on certain plays then some look like he isn't going all out maybe. I dont know. Maybe not quite the speed as Vick but he could gain a lot on that speed within a couple years. His body motions look just like Vick agility and change of direction wise. He's very elusive and that's a certain. Some of you guys don't know what the hell you are talking about and don't know what you are even looking at when you see it so shut the hell up will ya! This kid is not slow. His throwing motion is better and maybe has a better release. Accuracy looks pretty damn good too. Go get him Jim and Pep. Damn boys, boom shakalaka!!
