But he will avoid contact this week.

Welcome back WS. This can do nothing but help the team.
November 13th, 2017 at 1:09 PM ^
Will it make any difference for Michigan in the last two regular season games? Sounds doubtful. The bowl game though.....
November 13th, 2017 at 1:11 PM ^
My guess from this is he probably wouldn't play this Saturday but could be available for OSU if needed.

This is the bonus! I don't Speight will be ready for OSU, either - at least in a starting role. But either he or Peters would be a better option as backup than JOK.
November 13th, 2017 at 4:45 PM ^
Speight wants to play vs. OSU, it's been his motivation to battle this injury the past 6 weeks. Also, no Higdon would be a major problem, from what I saw today he was in the rb group and in film like everything is fine, however he was also with trainers along with Isaac and Walker for much of the late day stuff. My guess is he wants to play and will split carries with Evans. If he does not play it will be the coaches choice not his. Did not see Black at all, but Collins was out there. Michiganman14 what says you on Karan?

Great update - thanks!
I don't doubt for a hot second that all want to play badly. But I would be very surprised if WS gets cleared for contact in time to connect with game shape, reciever timing, and whatever else he needs to catch up with. Good luck to him either way, I'm just glad he's able to get back to practice!
November 13th, 2017 at 1:12 PM ^
It doesn't mean he'll be game ready this week or next, but just great to see him healing up ahead of schedule.
Maybe ready for a bowl game?
November 13th, 2017 at 1:21 PM ^
but unless Peters becomes a turnover machine why not let him start the rest of the way? if Speight doesn't get contact until next week (which isn't certain) he almost certainly won't play in the regular season. Even after a month or so of contact practices for Speight i'm not sure why he should start the bowl game.
November 13th, 2017 at 1:26 PM ^
only reason I could think of is if Harbaugh is reasonably sure he is going to start and play Speight next year and he wants to make it quite clear that there is not a "QB controversy" brewing. If he intends to play Speight next year and Speight has had 1.5 months of practice and is 100% healthy, it actually would make a lot of sense to me for him to play in the bowl game.

I wasn't saying that he should necessarily start - I was just guessing when he might be ready to play. Peters will get two good opportunities to solidify his grasp on the starting role in Madison and during The Game.
On the call of who starts, I'm solidly in the "In Harbaugh I Trust" camp.
November 13th, 2017 at 3:49 PM ^
the corollary to in Harbaugh I trust.
I'm sure the competition will begin as soon as Speight is totally healthy and starting in the spring McCaffery will be right in the middle it.
I just don't think we'll see Speight getting meaningful snaps this year.

I still am pretty confident WS will be the starter vs ND next year Week 1
November 13th, 2017 at 1:47 PM ^
If Peters gives us a chance to win the next 3 games I just can't see Speight getting his job back.
November 13th, 2017 at 2:37 PM ^
November 13th, 2017 at 2:40 PM ^
If he throws for 200+ yards, 60+ % completion, and 8+ ypa and we lose our next 3 games by a field goal, I think he's still the starter. I think if he is definitively not the reason we lose any of the next three then he is distinctly option #1 going into the spring.
November 13th, 2017 at 3:21 PM ^
and we lose close games, he will definiteively be the reason we dont win.
Id love to eat these words, but i have seen nothing so far that leads me to believe HE can win these games. Our defense and run game are the only hope we have at this point in my opinion.
I also am of the opinion based on everything that ive seen, and the words of alot of analysts this season that it Peters might be 3rd string next year behind Speight and McCaffrey.
November 13th, 2017 at 3:34 PM ^
Well if the refs never call PI and we run 2/3's of the time, then it gets tough to get to 200.
November 13th, 2017 at 4:53 PM ^
A lot of analysts? Can you share who it was, because I haven't seen any analysts say that.
November 13th, 2017 at 4:53 PM ^
In my opinion, the notion that Peters will be behind McCaffrey next year is ridiculous. If Speight beats him out it will be because he still commands the offense better, but I don't think that will happen.
November 13th, 2017 at 2:47 PM ^
Peters is undefeated and has played quite well, and looks to be very consistent.... It'd take a poor performance by him the rest of the way, for Speight to be starting.
November 13th, 2017 at 3:33 PM ^
November 13th, 2017 at 4:17 PM ^
Not a chance... Peters doesn't have the yips like JOK, and is very consistent, which is what we need.
November 13th, 2017 at 4:49 PM ^
Possibly, but they would have looked differently. We were tied with Rutgers and JOK threw an awful pick and fumbled twice before he was yanked. We haven't turned the ball over since. Peters might not be Andrew Luck yet, but he's been the only QB to move the offense with consistency and not inspire fear in the majority of the fanbase (this is certainly feelingsball). I don't think it's meaningless that we have actually handled bad teams like we should, rather than say go into overtime or need defense and special team touchdowns to beat bad teams.
November 13th, 2017 at 6:55 PM ^
yes, his ability to hand off the ball has been remarkable.
November 14th, 2017 at 5:40 AM ^
I have yet to see Peters forcefully throw a difficult pass, on the money in any of the games. The 1st TD pass last Saturday was thrown late and Gentry had to wait for it a moment. Even the short TD was a bit low and lobbed with hesitancy. We're gonna need a big step forward if we are going to win in the next 2 weeks.
If WS is ready, he is our best chance.
November 13th, 2017 at 3:53 PM ^
November 13th, 2017 at 4:45 PM ^
He has the highest Quarterback Rating of any QB we have played this year. I know that JOK got the toughest run of defenses of the three, but Peters has outplayed JOK and Speight. Whether you think Peters has played well is another question, but he has objectively been an upgrade at the position. Sometimes all we need is "fine".
November 13th, 2017 at 7:05 PM ^
looked its best. Which just happened to coincide with us playing the three easiest games on our schedule.
Seriously Peters has missed alot of open receivers, including a wide open touchdown saturday to DPJ. He missed a TD in the first game as well, not to mention it was a miracle his first drive didnt end in a pick 6.
The bar of expectations is really fucking low right now by alot of our fanbase. He has averaged 108 yards against the three worst defenses in the B1G.
Yes we ran the ball incredibly well, but if the coaches had any real confidence in his ability to lead this team to victory, the last few weeks was the time to show it. Not going on the road to a top 5 team.
November 13th, 2017 at 7:29 PM ^
Based on what?. Peters has more talent and he is gaining experience.
November 13th, 2017 at 1:23 PM ^
but is still avoiding contact this week, the chances of him playing before the bowl game are vanishingly small. It would require both O'Korn and Peters to be literally unable to perform for him to see the field against OSU.
November 13th, 2017 at 3:36 PM ^
I know that they don't hit the QB's in practice but he still was designated to practice with no contact only. So the chances of playing in the next two weeks have to be non-existent.
November 13th, 2017 at 1:21 PM ^
They will need Higdon vs. Wisconsin. He is the hardest runner.

As well as Davenport held my attention and Belker was the guy I most would want to share a fox hole during wartime. Let's be careful out there but also let's do it to them before they do it to us. Win Michigan. May we always win.
