Wilton Speight "likely out for season"

It was assumed but now it's looking like it is confirmed. After last night, this news is even more upsetting.

We have had maybe two or three series all year of good QB play. Why no minutes for Peters?

This feels like 2008 when Sheridan and Threet were Qb's. The defense today is so much better, but during the game you just feel like there is no chance to score.
I was almost happy when M punted thinking the defense had a better chance to move the ball.
I know o'korn is better than Sheridan, but he is just not good. His second interception he had Evans wide open in the flat, but he can only follow his primary target.

I agree with your sentiment, though. Might as well use the remainder of the season to get Peters really prepped well for 2018. No amount of offseason hype will convince any of us he is ready unless we see it in actual games this year.

but considering the way he was hit, it's also fortunate he didn't (apparently) sustain a more serious injury that impairs his mobility.
Football's a dangerous game.

I would rather Peters or Mccaffrey learn and get experience now than next year when we have a great roster.

The initial news gave me a sinking feeling that "several weeks" might mean "not soon enough to make much of a difference, however the season goes", but if it is the case that he's officially done for the year, then I kind of agree with others - I have a couple games that I think shifted to the "draw" and "lean loss" category barring some quick fixes to the offense. Maybe that's me being pessimistic, but that changes my thinking on some upcoming weeks quite a bit.

But I think his football career is over. Get your degree Wilton and have a successful career. O'Korn will ride out this season. Hopefully he improves but am worried he does not have the talent. I would not mind seeing more of Peters.

Have to agree. The Iowa injury last year broke him as a quarterback. He has been playing tentatively ever since.
The play where he tried to lob the ball over a defender to Crawford rather than just powering into the endzone with his size and momentum is an example.

Sucks, but I'm honestly not sure last night's result is much different with him under center. The offense was dead in the water with him against Purdue, and likely would've been even moreso last night.
At this point, I think it's time to see what you have with Peters. Speight is done for the year and O'Korn is what he is.

This is about experience, not fixing all our problems overnight. Sure, the OL and WR were trash. Why not find out how much was on them and how much was on the QBs. We have nothing to lose from Peters starting. If he plays terribly then it is just like the first 5 games of the year. If we plays well then that would be a big deal. What is there to lose?

Seven more games.

If Mccaffrey pans out, he SHOULD be that guy. Hopefully thats the case because if not, there will be a major problme at QB for the foreseeable future

I agree the season is not over. I don't think you can scrap whatever remains of this year to try and prepare for next. That being said, I have a hard time not seeing a few more losses for this team. Last night was not an anomaly on offense, it is the trend finally catching up to us. Unless Peters is better now, then I think you need to ride it out with OKorn.

simplified the offense for O'Korn so he can get to the first read.

If there is a loss to PSU, Peters or McCaffrey has to play. This offense is too young and UN-DEVELOPED to get it done this year. Conference title hopes will probably be gone after a loss in that game. Fuck the bowl game. Plan for next year.

The season continues. With O'korn, we have our best chance to win, and we have to do that. Perhaps he improves enough to be competitive with the PSUs and Wisconsins of the world. The guy has only started 2 games in 3 years. Yes, perhaps looking at 8-4, but anything worse with either Peters or McCaffrey kills our progress over the past 2 years and even further kills recruiting in '18 and '19. The cycle continues as we move towards mediocrity.
O'korn plays at least the next few games. Hopefully improves. If we continue to lose, then turn it over to one of the freshmen so that they can get experience before next year.

Sorry to hear that, for Speight. Not fun to be injured. From a football perspective though, Speight was not doing us many favors. I think a lot of O'Korn's INT woes yesterday were due to passing it repeatedly in the pouring rain. Not possible to be accurate in that, and difficult to judge the field. Distance, speed, rhythm, all that gets thrown off in a monsoon. So I'm up for giving him another chance.
O'Korn also did some good things out there, a few of which were negated by penalty or WR error. And I think Michigan has the best chance of winning games with him going forward this year.
BTW, I don't fault the coaches for passing it either. We needed to get something going, and the run game wasn't working.

dayum.
That's potentially a lifelong injury. I looked at the tape again, in light of this information. Must've been in incredible pain.
Has to be demoralizing for a coach, as well. the feeling you can't effectively protect your man. No wonder O'Korn is skittish & quick to bolt.
As for "soft tissue" -- clearly a case of not wanting to show one's hand, plus the instinct to camoflague serious injury. Understandable enuff.
