underappreciated band that was, IMO.
Also just saw Dave Strader passed yesterday. Wings play-by-play guy of my youth (though he moved on before the Wings' Cup years).

old wave, new wave, alt-country...rockers - didn't matter, Petty was cool to pretty much everyone across all music lines
...and some psycho jackwad in Vegas steals the headlines - no justice

He is going to outlive all of them.

The great classic rock artists are dying off at a rapid pace.
I always enjoyed his song about Michigan State, Even the Losers get Lucky sometime.

I saw Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers at The Fillmore in SF (with Taj Mahal to open!). It was a great show and I'm glad I got to see him in a smaller venue where he could really shine.
One moment I remember was when someone up front turned around and was about to throw a punch when Tom stopped playing and said in a serious voice "Whoa - that's not cool. If you're gonna fight someone, it's gonna be me, and I don't think the audience is gonna like that ..."
(I'm not sure of the exact wording, because as he continued he got drowned out by cheers!)
Then he looked at the band, nodded his head and they picked up right where they left off.
RIP, sir. I really don't feel a whole lot better now that you're gone.

The story now is no brain activity, taken off life support, and he's DNR. Reports were premature, but he's not going to come out of this.

He was braindead. What's the reason to resuscitate?

He's not quite dead yet. Sounds like it will be soon though.

Might? Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. That's a Dream Team in music standards.

i mean this is a michigan blog so i'm shocked that no one has started the discussion on why lack of brain activity does not equal death and so on.
Then again, this is the blog that has monthly discussions of who is the best frontman of all time. so carry on.
and here's a vote for "Walls".

Because there is no way in a governed multiverse that Tom Petty should precede in death the apparently immortal Keith Richards. Still, I do like them Indiana girls. RIP for now.

H-Bomb Test in North Korea; Hurricane Devastation in Texas, Florida and the Caribbean; Horrific Massacre in Las Vegas; . . . and now, Hall of Fame Rocker Tom Petty's Unexpected, Premature Death.
Feels like the world should "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." Love live the memory and the music of the leader of the Heartbreakers! Way too soon for him to have reached the "End of the Line."

Petty was one of the great rock-n-roll songwriters. While I personally would't put him in the pantheon of Dylan, Springsteen, or Paul Simon, I could also easily make the case that he does belong. The Heartbreakers were such an amazing band and Mike Campbell does not get his due as a guitar player....at all.
There are so many hits, but Petty also had countless deep cuts that the average fan does not know. Always surprises me when people dont know a song like "Walls." If you have time today I recommend exploring his catalog a bit deeeper.
Some recs off the top of my head
Walls, Straight into Darkness, Echo, Flirting with Time, Square One, Room at the Top....or just play his 1999 album "Echo" written in the wake of his divorce. Tons of great songs there.
